COLOR BLOCKPASTELS, CORALS + GOLD - A SUMMER DIY

By Penelope and Pip

Page 30: Here Comes the Sun 12

Step 1: Mask off half of each coaster diagonally.Step 2: Using a different color for each coaster, paint half of each coaster and leave to dry.Step 3: Depending on your paint's drying time, come back and give each coaster another coat so the colors are crisp and thick. You could actually leave the coasters like this with the wooden side exposed and then finish with a clear varnish. However, we like a bit of

sparkle, so if you do too, it's time to add the gold!Step 4: Mask off the painted side (this time, be sure they are completely dry or the paint will peel when the masking tape is removed). Now spray paint each side using a gold spray paint. Allow to dry and remove the tape.Step 5: Varnish each coaster with a clear lacquer to protect them from any liquid..

Now all you need to do, is invite some friends over for drinks!

One of the most striking things about Iceland (besidesthe scenery) is the way in which myth and folklore are built into the culture of the country and the psyche of its people. One of my favourite examples of this is the idea of huldufólk, or hidden people.

From what I’ve been able to piece together so far, huldufólk are elf-like creatures who inhabit a parallel world. They live within the landscape, beneath the rocks and hills, remaining invisible to most

There is a small percentage of the Icelandic populationwho believe that the huldufólk truly exist (somewhere around the eight percent mark), but up to half the pop-ulation, when surveyed, would not deny their existence.

Interestingly, this possibility of their presence seems to guide the nation, at least occasionally. For example, new building projects will often take into consideration potential huldufólk habitats using the guidance of a medium or mystic. If a particular place is determined to be the habitat of the hidden people, roads may be diverted or new construction relocated.

Icelandic belief in the huldufólk may be over exagger-ated by visitors (like myself ) who find the notion mysterious and whimsical. What’s not exaggerated, however, is the Icelandic connection to nature, which seems to manifest itself in the beautiful idea that some-thing (or someone) important inhabits the rocks and hills and mountains, and that this presence should not be disturbed without some thought and consultation.

The story of the huldufólk provides a wonderful example of the inclusion of myth in a thoroughly modern nation and it also provides a fine introduction to a beautiful line of products that draw upon some of the myths and stories of Iceland.

Vík Prjónsdóttir is a brand that produces incredible products from Icelandic sheep’s wool (a highly sustainable material here). The line is a collaboration between designers Brynhildur Pálsdóttir, Gudfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir, Thuríður Sigurþórsdóttir and Iceland’s oldest knitting factory, Víkurprjón.

You can buy Vík’s work directly from SPARK Design Space if you happen to be in Reykjavik or – wait for it – you can order directly from Vík's website. They ship internationally and, better yet, they offer FREE shipping to Europe, the United States and Canada!

I visited the village of Vík (the location of Iceland’s oldest knitting factory, where these beautiful products are produced) and I wanted to leave you all with some images of the incredible landscape around this tiny town.

LEMON SPARKLE

By Jeannette Ordas of Everybody Likes Sandwiches

*

Page 65: Here Comes the Sun 12

First off: vodka. Next: prosecco. Then: lemons. Finally: Pour. Ice. And again, please! I'm assuming you're familiar with vodka, yes? Moving on to prosecco, a dry Italian sparkling wine that is just made for summer drinking. What do both of these alcohols have in common? They go great withlemon, so let this sparkling lemon drop cocktail be your summer bevie of choice.

First you have to start off with some lemon spiked simple syrup.

Like the name implies, it's simple to make and a must-have for quick lemonades and cocktails. Keep some on hand all summer and it won't disappoint!

Lemon Simple Syrup1/2 cup sugar1/2 cup waterzest from 3 lemons

Heat sugar and water in a small saucepan until mixture comes to a boil. Drop in the lemon zest and give mixture a stir. Cool completely (about 2 hours).

Sparkling Lemon Drops(adapted from Martha)3 lemons, juiced1 recipe lemon simple syrup1/2 cup chilled vodka (the good stuff )1 bottle of prosecco, chilledice + slices of thin lemons

In a large juice jar or punch bowl, combinethe lemon juice, lemon simple syrup and vodka together. Pour in the prosecco and stir lightly. Pour into cocktail glasses and serve with ice and thin slices of lemon. Makes 6-8 drinks.

Now find a sunny patio and a few friends and enjoy summer!
