3. Zigzag around the circle to appliqué it to the square. 4. Pair up the following color/shape combinations:

Template A fabric / Template B fabric(4) sets each:G/A J/B H/BJ/DH/DG/J

(8) sets each:D/LF/EH/EF/J

(12) sets each: K/EH/L

(16) sets each:I/C

5. Finger-press all the Template A and B shapes in half to crease-mark the center. Place A on top of B matching the centers. Pin in place at the mid-point (Fig. 4) and at the bottom end of the unit. Starting at the mid-point, slowly stitch from the center along the curve to the end, gently aligning the two fabric edges to meet as they approach the presser foot. Stitch from the center out to the end without removing the pins (Fig. 5). Backstitch to secure. Pin the top edges even and in the same manner, stitch again from the top to the mid-point. Trim the block to 91⁄2” x 91⁄2” (24.13cm x 24.13cm) (Fig. 6). Do not press the seam yet.

6. Repeat Step 5 to join all the fabric pairs to make a total of (96) blocks.

7. Following the Quilt Layout for color placement and orientation, lay out the blocks in (10) rows (4 rows of 10 blocks each above and below the centered octopus block; 2 rows with 8 blocks each surrounding the octopus block). Press the curved seams in opposite directions for adjacent blocks (Fig. 7).

Quilt Top Assembly8. Join the row 5-6 (4) blocks together that will border

the center block. Stitch (1) set to each side (Fig. 8)shown below.

9. Sew the blocks together In each remaining row, matching adjacent seams. Press the seams in opposite directions for adjacent rows.

10. Sew the rows together in order, matching adjacent seams. Press the seams in one direction.

Finishing11. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt

top (right side up). Quilt as desired.12. Sew the (10) 2½” x WOF (6.35cm x WOF)

Fabric F strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press the strip in half wrong sides together to make the binding.

13. Carefully trim the backing and batting even with quilt top.

14. Leaving an 8” (20.32cm) tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12” (30.48cm) from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to ¼” (.64cm) and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

15. Turn binding to back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
