From the Editor: Film Noir & Budgets.Thank you all for the kind comments on last month’s issue. Unfortunately it costs us a lot of money to print them in color. We’ve identified that we can save approximately $1400 a year by limiting color to 4 pages and the rest in black & white. “here@FIRST” will still be produced in color, and will be available in color on the church website. If you would like us to print one for you in full color we would be happy to do so for donation of a dollar. Just ask for one in the church office.

Christ calls us to be in community with each other. As you read the contents of this newsletter, it is our hope that the stickfigures throughout will help you think of someone in your life that God is calling you to reach out to.

Pastor Jack’s Welcome

Dear Church Family,

He is Risen! This is the Good News of Jesus Christ! We gather together on the 24th of this month to join our voices with brothers and sisters throughout the valley and world to participate in the proclamation that is the foundation of our faith. Without Easter, we simply have no foundation on which to stand. In the words of the Apostle’s Creed, we “believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead.”

Through the sacrifice of the Son, we are saved and our lives should be lived out as a response to the grace given to us in Jesus Christ! This response includes stewardship. On behalf of the Session, I want to thank you for your continued response to Him. I know times are tough for many in our valley and that is precisely when the church of Jesus Christ is called to respond. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims: "You are the light of the world. A

city on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp

and put it under a bowl. Instead

they put it on its stand, and it gives

light to everyone in the house. In

the same way, let your light shine

before men, that they may see your

good deeds and praise your Father

in heaven” (Matt. 5:14-16).

When economic institutions and other modern day idols fail, you realize that the only thing you can really put your trust in is God. His promise is true and eternal. His love never fails. His light cannot be hid. Even in the midst of suffering, God can use that for His good purpose. Consider the words of Paul: “We…

boast in our sufferings, knowing

that suffering produces endurance,

and endurance produces character,

and character produces hope,

and hope does not disappoint

us, because God’s love has been

poured into our hearts through the

Holy Spirit that has been given to

us” (Romans 5:3-5).

I continue to have great hope as we move deeper into 2011. I believe we have an incredible opportunity before us. Now is the time for the light of Christ to shine brightly. Now is that time for people to experience real hope. I believe God is calling us to, not only share, but be the message of hope within a community that is in desperate need. Simply put I believe God is calling us to be the light in the darkness and we stand at a crossroads. Will we proclaim and demonstrate, “He is Risen!”and let that light shine or will we remain in the darkness?

Our worship team search committee continues its evaluation of candidates to step into permanent leadership of the Contemporary and Traditional services. We continue to assess the needs of children’s ministry and are so thankful to Susie Woodin for stepping in and being our interim Children’s Director. At the leadership level, we are set to begin to engage in some long-term strategic planning fresh off the heels of Jim Singleton’s visit. I do not know how long this will take, but I invite your prayers for God’s direction and guidance as we move forward.

There is no doubt that God calls each of us to participate in His mission to the community and world. The leadership of the church wants to facilitate more opportunities to taste what God’s Kingdom is all about. It starts with worship (and worship leadership) and carries over into our lives. My experience has been that when people taste it and see that it is good, they want more of it! Please continue to pray about how you can do your part and participate in God’s Kingdom in 2011.

With Appreciation, Love, and Prayers,

Pastor Jack PeeblesSenior Pastor&Elder Marshall GroveStewardship Chair, 2011

PCome Enjoy a Traditional Seder Meal

On the night before Jesus was crucified He had a final meal

with His disciples, a celebration of the Jewish Passover. It

was during this meal that Jesus instituted our practice of

communion. We will have an informal Seder meal complete

with the traditional elements (including lamb) at 5:30p

April 21st, prior to our Maundy Thursday worship service.

Historically, this meal has been very intergenerational, and

we would like to continue that tradition. Kids will especially

learn about the Passover and its connection to communion.

Cost is $7 per person, or $25 max for a family. Kids 5 and

under are free. Reservations are necessary. Reserve your

spot by contacting the office or at the connection center.Shan Trick

“My Husband and I attend the marriage class taught by

Hamilton and Carol Licht on Sunday mornings. I can easily

say that it has sparked conversation that we have never had

in our 5 years of marriage. The book we are using for class

during the class as well as husband/wife conversations in

vulnerable and used by God to bring this wonderful material

to us. It is exciting to see how we have grown so far in our

marriage, and it’s clear to see how God is bringing other

couples closer because of this class.” - Anonymous Member

We want to share a bit about our Spring Women’s Retreat on Lake Chelan...Come Away With Me - Knowing the Power of God’s Love was the theme for this year’s women’s retreat and thank you Jesus, we got to really know the power of His amazing

love! It was an absolutely beautiful weekend on the lake with 130 fun women, resting, dancing, praying, worshipping and learning

“This weekend was such a blessing. The Holy Spirit moved among us!”

“I have learned so much about the Lord, about love and about the power of the Holy Spirit. I am blessed to

have gotten to come!”“I received freedom from

bondage that I have been enslaved to for 43 years. Praise God - I am free! It is finished!”

“The Holy Spirit was in Chelan and in full force! Praise Jesus!”

“I am learning to listen to the Lord in prayer and during scripture reading. I would encourage any one who has

not been on a retreat to go - you don’t need to know anyone or worry about

anything. God is present and will “hug” you through the retreat. Come with joy and watch your love with God develop!”

“I received a prophetic blessing from God through prayer -- it was so joy filled and I was so consumed with the Holy Spirit that I just laughed

and laughed! It was so freeing! Thank you God!”

“I met Jesus in a new and precious way through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit”

“Thank you for welcoming me. This experience has enriched my life. My personal relationship with

the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is deeper after the weekend and will continue to grow deeper.”

more about our Guide in life, the Holy Spirit. Thank you God for preparing the way for all the women who were able to attend this retreat. Thank you to all the women who helped us prepare, who faithfully prayed and served during the weekend. Also, a BIG thank you to the incredible amount of scholarship money given -- your gifts helped ten women get to Chelan to be greatly blessed by our Creator. God is soooo good! We hope you enjoy just a few of the testimonies written by women at the retreat.

Hello Team...another update from

beautiful Cartagena, Colombia!

Thank you for your prayers and support for this

team. By the way, the names of those involved in

this trip are Mike Buehler, Steve Luten, Bruce and

Ann Willis, Brett and Roger Cohun, Pam Cleaver,

Preti Streich. We have had a great time. The team

is working on remodeling floors, bathrooms and

kitchens in 4 houses. We have been able to partner

with the home owners, who are formidable workers.

There is great synergy in the group and we all are

enjoying our time here. You are welcome to look at

some of the pictures if you check my facebook page.

Blessings,

with Habitat for Humanity.)

ATTENTION BABYBOOMERS!!Do you know how to enroll in Social Security or how to enroll in the Medicare program? Well on March 29, 2011 at 6:00p. a seminar will be held in the Garden Room. Information will be provided by a Professional Financial Planner who will lead you through the hoops of Social Security, when would be a good time to enroll, how to enroll, and do you need to enroll at age 62 or 70. There are penalties if you don’t enroll into Medicare by a certain time. Do you know when that is? Rich Millet will provide answers to all these questions and any other questions you may have about Social Security and Medicare. I was amazed to find what I need to do to get started when I turn 66. There are a lot of different ways to benefit if you know when to enroll and what you can and cannot do when enrolling. Did you know that you can delay your retirement and receive an additional 8% per year for just waiting to collect Social Security, and that your spouse can also claim Social Security on your income and, then, on a later date collect full Social Security on his/her income at a higher payout. So come and hear Mr. Millet as he takes us through the Social Security and Medicare jungles.

Upcoming Senior Sneak Trips in 2011

Visit the B-Reactor at Hanford in April. On April 23 we will go to the Aiken Theater to watch “The Odd Couple”, show time is 2:00p.On May 13 and 14 we will travel via Amtrak to Leavenworth for Mayfest. Register with Accent Tours. In June we hope to visit Allen Brothers in Naches for a tour of the Cherry Packing process. Date to be announced. On July 3 we will go the see the Bear’s baseball team play, followed by fireworks. And finally, we will take a tour of the Suncadia facility on August 25. Lunch will be on your own.

Prayer Connection

Student ministries is still looking for people who are willing

to be a prayer connection for a student. This role of prayer

connection entails 1) connecting with the student at least

once every 3 months. 2) Praying for the student regularly

and 3) making the student feel welcome at church.

Volunteering as a prayer connection is a great way to

participate in the work that Jesus is doing in and through

students. It is also a duty of the church to fulfill its

baptismal vows to disciple students in the name of Jesus. If

you are someone who has the desire to pray and connect

with the next generation.

Palm Sunday Breakfast

Student Ministries is hosting a breakfast on Palm Sunday in order to raise money for Outreach Camp. This is intended to replace the brunch that used to take place on Easter Sunday. Please note the change and come to breakfast in order to support Outreach Camp, a very important ministry of this church. Sunday, April 17 9:00a-1:00p.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34This is the command that Jesus gave to us at the

Last Supper. In the Latin ‘command’ is written

‘mandatum’, which read in old English gives us Maundy,

Maundy Thursday.

Men’s Ministry: Looking Forward

Plans are being made for Men’s Ministry at FPC to join

forces with the men from Westminster and Cristo Vive to

participate in a neighborhood revitalization project near the

Madison House. For the last two years, our men’s fellowship

has been involved in helping remodel and upgradeing the

facilities at the school, as well as supporting a number of

the ministries offered there. This year we are planning to

expand our vision to helping the families near the school as

further outreach to the community. We will do small repairs,

outside painting, replace windows, and other beautification

projects as a way to reach out to these families with the love

and care of Jesus Christ. We will begin in May. Stay tuned for

more details as the dates draw near.

Also, keep your ears open for other Spring and Summer

activities that will be coming up, and our plans for next Fall.

DevotionalBecause He is Risen . . .

“My God, my God! Why have you forsaken me? Why do you remain so distant? Why do you ignore my cries for help? Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night you hear my voice, but I find no relief. Psalm 22: 1-2

David wrote Psalm 22 from a place of great suffering; he clearly felt abandoned by everyone including His God. He expresses a personal torment that mirrors Jesus’ crucifixion hundreds of years later. This Psalm begins as an expression of deep suffering and a cry for help but then ends in joy and praise of the Lord.

As Jesus hung on the cross He called out quoting the first line of Psalm 22 “My God, my God! Why have You forsaken Me?” Jesus was not questioning God but rather expressing the awful anguish He felt as He bore the sins of the world and was separated from His Father. God had to turn away from Jesus as He allowed our sin to be placed on Him. Jesus became sin for us and experienced the loneliness and abandonment that sin always produces. His physical agony was horrible but worse was the period of separation from God. Jesus suffered this so that we would never experience eternal separation from our Creator.

This was real love and real love is what we are called to have for one another. Who are the

people you love? How does your love compare to this description of God’s love for us?

Prayer: Father God, Creator of love, enable me to show others that I love them and not just say it. May I put others first by applying Your love to all my relationships.

We know what real love is because Christ gave up His life for us. And so we also ought to give up our lives for our Christian brothers and sisters. 1 John 3:16

For He has not ignored the suffering of the needy. He has not turned and walked away. He has listened to their cries for help. I will praise You among all the people; I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who worship You. The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise Him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to Him. People from every nation will bow down before Him. For the LORD is King! He rules all the nations. Psalm 22:24-28

A Commentary on The Mitford Series by Jan KaronI have travelled back many times to the village of Mitford since my mom shared the first book, At Home in Mitford, with me. The people of Mitford-- Father Tim, Cynthia, Doolie, Sadie Baxter & Louella, Uncle Billy and his wife Rose, and a host of other ordinary and very individual characters -- showed me how faith can be lived each day. Jan Karon has taken me away from the daily grind when I felt too heavy to move, then sent me back to live refreshed with hope in our Lord who loves us.

Your church library carries the original 9 volumes of the Mitford Series, and the 2 books of the following Father Tim series. The Mitford Series is also available to read in Large Print. You too can travel to Mitford and share Father Tim's courtship of Cynthia, his fathering of young, angry Doolie Barlowe, and his pastoring of the flock at Lord's Chapel. You will meet his breakfast/lunch buddies at the Main Street Grill, his mentor Miss Sadie Baxter, his secretary Emma Newland and many other friends and neighbors. You'll watch his faith in action with a severely burned woman, and his struggles with a predatory female parishioner, his triumphs in trusting God and his self-doubts. And you may find yourself returning again and again as I have to walk the streets of Mitford. Rondi Downs
