National Heritage Corridor

Engineered to accommodate mule-pulled packet boats, the canal stretched 60 ft. wide, 6 ft deep and was completely hand-dug by the hard-laboring Irish, German, Scandinavian and later Eastern European immigrants who settled the nearby Canal towns. Seventeen locks were constructed to accommodate the changes in elevation, and a trip down the Canal could take anywhere from 17-24 hours. Accommodations on the packet boats were sparse, but did include meals and some rather uncomfortable sleeping quarters. Notables such as Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Charles Dickens, and Nathaniel Hawthorn were

known to have made the voyage. Lincoln Landing in Lockport is a park dedicated to Lincoln’s role in the history of the canal as well as other famous travelers.

Today, the Illinois & Michigan Canal is a living history museum dedicated to the great economic prosperity and the cultural diversity brought forth to the region. Historical sites, interpretive parks and installments dot the landscape of the I&M Canal towpath. Visitors can see the restored Locktenders House at Channahon State Park. On the National Register of Historic Places, The Fitzpatrick House at Lewis University in Lockport was once home to Patrick Fitzpatrick, a successful farmer, businessman, and important figure amongst the Irish immigrant community. The Gaylord Building was made from limestone unearthed during the construction of the Canal

and stands as an important link to the past. An experience you won’t want to miss, visitors can once again navigate the Illinois and Michigan Canal on authentic mule-pulled packet boats, guided by canal-era passengers and crew at the LaSalle Canal Boat Rides and Visitor Center.

In addition to a rich historical experience, visitors can enjoy the Illinois & Michigan Canal towpath for a variety of year-round recreational uses including hiking, biking, snowmobiling, camping, picnicking, and fishing. Explorers can canoe a 15 mi. stretch of the Canal between Channahon State Park and Gebhard Woods or a shorter 5 mi. jaunt between Utica and La Salle. The Canal Corridor Association offers a Canal Passage Driving Tour; receive a map by calling 815-220-1848 or emailing [email protected].

Chicago Portage Area

The Chicago Portage National Historic Site is the only place left in Illinois where you can stand on the same ground traveled by these two explorers. Located in the Portage Woods Forest Preserve in Lyons, visitors begin at the 20 ft. statue commemorating

the explorers and their Native American guides and continue along the actual portage path, guided by interpretive signs.

Another intriguing site in Lyons is the Hoffman Tower Museum, an eight story castle-like structure which once served as a centerpiece for a large, progressive recreational area featuring power boat rides, canoeing, picnicking, dancing, orchestra concerts and a beer garden.

The iconic Route 66 makes a pass through Countryside and Indian Head Park, where you will find throwbacks such as The Wishing Well Motel and Wolf’s Head Inn. Route 66 Classic Motors in Countryside showcases automobiles from the era.

Within Chicago Portage, you’ll find all the urban amenities

you’re looking for, however, Willow Springs, Lemont, and Hodgkins are also teeming with nature preserves and recreational areas for those looking to escape the hustle for a while.

Get out and explore today’s Chicago Portage Area, it’s the perfect jumping-off point for your journey into the Heritage Corridor. You’ll find its communities overflowing with historical sites and tours, downtown shopping, antiquing, dining, and outdoor recreation.

Lincoln Highway Association136 N. Elm St.Franklin Grove IL 61031 • 815-456-3030The idea of the Lincoln Highway came from the fertile mind of Carl Fisher, the man also responsible for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Miami Beach. With help from fellow industrialists Frank Seiberling and Henry Joy, an improved, hard-surfaced road was envisioned that would stretch almost 3400 miles from coast to coast, New York to San Francisco, over the shortest practical route. The Lincoln Highway Association was created in 1913 to promote the road using private and corporate donations. The idea was embraced by an enthusiastic public, and many other named roads across the country followed. Americans’ enthusiasm for good roads led to the involvement of the federal government in building roads and the creation of numbered U.S. routes in the 1920s. The Federal Highway Administration and the Interstate Highway System are the culmination of these efforts.
