Heritage tourism is a growth industry that presents opportuni>es to broaden the State’s tourism base, increase visitor experiences, and contribute to the sustainability of heritage places. Research has shown that heritage tourists tend to stay longer, spend more, and seek out experiences in museums and art galleries, historical and heritage buildings, sites and monuments.
Heritage is unique to each region, place and person and sets des>na>ons, products and experiences apart – the key to crea>ng a sound compe>>ve advantage. This half-‐day event showcases some of WA’s leading examples of heritage-‐based visitor experiences, events and venues. Hear first-‐hand from the crea>ve and passionate people involved in developing and delivering these experiences. Find out how you can create a point of difference and deliver successful heritage-‐based ac>vi>es.
Learn about the range of unique heritage tourism products on offer at the highly-‐awarded Fremantle Prison.
Hear from the City of Albany about one of Australia’s largest heritage events, Anzac Albany. Learn more about how the Na>onal Anzac Centre was developed and how it connects people with the moving stories of the ANZACS. Enjoy a walking tour into Fremantle, recently ranked by Lonely Planet as seventh in the top ten ci>es in the world to visit in 2016.
The tour will be guided by the City of Fremantle team responsible for the revitalisa>on of this outstanding des>na>on, and will showcase a number of heritage sites that have been adapted into thriving tourism businesses. The event will finish with a Sundowner at the Na>onal Hotel.

1.30pm Welcome to City of Fremantle Dr Brad Pede, Mayor of the City of Fremantle, will discuss the importance of conserving and promo>ng the City’s heritage.
1.40pm Case Study – Fremantle Prison Luke Donegan, Fremantle Prison Heritage Conserva>on Manager, will provide an overview of the Prison’s business development of one of WA’s most fascina>ng heritage tourism aerac>ons. Janine Della Bosca, Prison Guide will share her secrets in delivering engaging prison tours and provide delegates with a taste of the award-‐winning Art Tour.

3.00pm Anzac Albany – City of Albany The 100th anniversary of the departure of the first ANZAC troops from Albany was a major milestone in the
history of the na>ons of Australia and New Zealand. City of Albany Execu>ve Director Community Services Adam Cousins and Senior Planning Officer Tom Wenbourne will share the challenges faced by a local community in the na>onal spotlight, to deliver key legacy projects and highlight the ongoing value of Regional Des>na>on Events.
3.55pm Make Heritage your Point of Difference Gay McNamara, State Heritage Office Execu>ve Manager Corporate Communica>ons, will discuss how to use heritage to create a unique business advantage. Whether it be a café, B&B, retail space or restaurant, heritage can be used as a valuable selling point -‐ one that dis>nguishes it from a compe>ng business.
4.15pm Fremantle Warder’s CoSages & City Heritage Highlights Mike Betham, State Heritage Office Director Heritage Works, will share informa>on on the challenges faced in adap>ng the State Registered convict-‐built terraces for contemporary use. The City of Fremantle team will expand on a range of the City’s unique heritage assets.
4.40pm City of Fremantle Heritage Walking Tours Depar>ng Warders’ Coeages and finishing at the Na>onal Hotel for a networking Sundowner.
5.15pm Welcome to the NaConal Hotel CEO Karl Bullers will provide an insight into the 1903 building’s tumultuous past, including murders, deaths and dastardly shenanigans. Following a devasta>ng fire, the building was restored into a modern bar and restaurant, whilst retaining its character and unique heritage.
5.30pm Networking Sundowner – Cash bar. Finger food kindly provided by the Na>onal Hotel.

Heritage Walking Tours
4.40pm City of Fremantle Heritage Walking Tours Delegates will be taken on guided tours by the Economic Development team from the City of Fremantle. The tours will showcase the City’s heritage assets and will commence from the Warders’ Coeages and finish for a Sundowner at the Na>onal Hotel.
Tour 1 Led by Alan Kelsall, Heritage Coordinator, City of Fremantle
This tour will take in the Princess Chambers on Market St, to explain its evolu>on as a crea>ve hub, the Quest tourist apartments on Pakenham St, a new short-‐stay accommoda>on development and the ‘Bread in Common’ a successful heritage adap>ve reuse project and the Evan Davies Building on the Cappuccino Strip.
Tour 2 Led by Maehew Hammond, Economic Development Officer, City of
Fremantle This tour will showcase the High St Mall revitalisa>on, Atwell Arcade, Town Hall and the Union Stores restora>on. It will also include the Moore & Moore Café and the Ball & Chain, the newest old bar.
Tour 3 Led by Luis Puig, Economic Development Coordinator, City of Fremantle
This tour includes the Fremantle Markets, which con>nue to be the most visited aerac>on in the City. The recent restora>on of the Evans Building on the Cappuccino Strip, ‘Bread in Common’ on Pakenham St and Common Ground Collec>ve, a new wave of young retail, as well as the Town Hall, Atwell Arcade and High Street Mall.
