    MAKING IT HAPPEN

What is the most powerful thing that humans have? Maybeis a bazooka. Perhaps a super computer or even a space shuis the most powerful thing on the planet. While each of theseis great in its own way, none of it would have been possiblewithout one basic concept to help develop and create them

This concept that you are undoubtedly worried about is thepower of positivity.

When we think of a positivity, we generally think of saying nthings about somebodys hair, complementing their shoes, oeven noting that they look good with their new glasses. Whatwe dont realize is that while compliments are a necessity tomaintain a positive atmosphere, there is another componendrastically more important, avoiding negativity.

Think about your after school activities and your colleaguewho are leaders for your club or sport. When they get mad ayou, what do they usually do? Most likely, they raise their voiclower their tone, and use words that are hurtful, attacking, orderogatory towards you. Without even realizing it, they have

communicated negatively to you and made you want to beless positive in around three seconds.

After reading this, I am sure that some are now wonderinghow they are to overcome such negative feelings when todaworld seems to promote negativity matter what the situationis. The truth is that the only thing we need to overcome this isshort statement, only three words long, that we will consistengo back to for support. Yes, I can.

While it may seem overly simplistic, that is not always a territhing. In this case, the simplicity of this phrase allows us to holon to it, use it, and remember it when times are tough. If peocan return to this phrase over and over again, eventually, thminds will develop the sense that they can accomplish theirrealistic goals if given enough time.

By thinking Yes I can, it will also help the outlook peoplehave on the various problems in their lives. Often time, theproblem for humans is not actually the problem, but their initattitude towards the problem. By starting out in the mindset tyou can do it, the likelihood of the situation turning out bettewill drastically increase. The likelihood of the situation turning better will drastically increase if you start out with the mindsethat it can be accomplished.

Throughout the United Statesynthetic drugs are becoming morend more popular. These so-calledegal highs have been sold in smokehops and herbal remedy stores aserbal incense, bath salts, and herbalupplements in order

o hide their truese; however, manyf these drugs are

ar more dangeroushan their illegalounterparts as theyave been linkedo several deathshrough eitherverdose or suicide

    while under thenuence of these

rugs.In order to conrm suspicions of a

tudent being under the inuence ofynthetic drugs, or any drugs for that

matter, we perform a standard eldobriety test. This includes watchinghe way someones eyes move, hecking their motor skills such as

walking in a straight line or standingn one leg. This tells us whetherr not they are on the drug weuspect them to be using. Then, if thetudent requires medical attention

we will take them to the hospitalwhere further testing can be done,

    esource Ofcer Darnelle Sims said.

These drugs usually will demandmedical attention after being taken,

s they can be deadly even if oneoes not overdose, due to how itffects it has upon the users brain.ke many other drugs these canlock out any and all logical thinking,nd these drugs often cause extremeehavior. One well-known example is the

mauler from Miami. After being told toby Jude Spauldingphoto by Cara Maples-McCauley

man who had climbed up a agpoleand threw himself into oncomingtrafc.

The symptoms displayed in astudent depend on what the studentis using. It is typical for their eyes to

    dilate or constrict,

and if they are ona mixture of drugstheir eyes will varybetween the two.You can also tellby their motor skillsor body language. The studentsdexterity and

reaction timemay be affectedas well, Sims

    said.These synthetic drugs are made

with similar chemicals to theircounterparts, however similarchemicals do not alweays meansimilar effects. Synthetic drugs canbe broken down in to two differentcategories. Cannabinoids, alsoknown as K2, or spice, which createsa euphoric feeling. The other typeis known as synthetic cathinones,an alternative to cocaine andamphetamines.

The most common symptomsof a student who is under theinuence of any substance include

dgeting or twitching, as well asan attitude of either lethargy oranger, Sims said.

Many of these drugs, while legal, can still be extremely dangerous. Many have suffered and diedfrom either overdose, or a drug....

There are manypolicies put into placeat the school. However, students do not alwaysagree with thesepolicies.

    If you ght, if you

choose to ght you are going to get consequences, principle John Faulkenberry said.

There is a progression of consequences for violentacts at the school. The rst offense, in most cases, will

result in a ve day out of school suspension. If a secondght is to occur, then a ten-day OSS will be given. Theseransgressions transfer over a students entire four years of

schooling, being built upon for each violent act. Many students think that the dress code is unfair in h

it treats sports differently than other students. The drescode is a strict policy that limits what students will weato keep the decency and limit distractions within theclassroom. However, a student wearing his or her spouniform during the school day creates blurry lines.

If we are going to have a swimming program, kids going to be breaking the dress code, Faulkenberry sa

When it comes to wearing certain uniforms during thschool day, some may be completely unacceptable, such as wearing a swimsuit during the day, but thecheerleading uniform can slip through the cracksbecause it is school spirit. All and all, it ends beingadministrations decision where lines have been cross

Cell phones: almost all students have one, and somstudents want to use them to access the internet. However, this is against school policy. There is only a certain amount of bandwidth for theentire school; if every student were to use it with exterdevises then it would run out and all of the schoolscomputer systems would run slow. This would affectlearning within the classroom as well as communicatiobetween teachers. Some students choose to requestthe use of the internet for a laptop or other device tohelp with schooling, and this is occasionally allowed. However, if the student is found to be using this privileginappropriately the student could get into trouble.

With these rules in place, students are kept safe andlearning can still take place in a classroom.

To Whom ItMay Concern,In our school, a lot of concern is put out by students

about the B building lobby, and trying to get through itwithout running into people.

The problem has gotten so bad that we actually

have dedicated teachers out in the lobby trying tokeep students from standing still and blocking up thehallway. While it is a big problem, there is not verymuch that administration can do because we havea lot of students here, and they are all trying to getthrough the school, so there will always be congestionthere. The problem is that students will stand there, andno matter how much the teachers standing there willtell them to move, they are more than content to standin the middle of the lobby and block up the hall.

However, students have many more choices to getthrough the B building, and out to the other buildings, than just the blocked and congested lobby. Students

can always leave B building through a different door, or

    walk upstairsand downa differentstaircase.

Whilealternaterouteswill work, it is a little inconvenient for students.Administration should continue doing what they arealready doing, but they should nd a way to enforce

the policy with telling people to move on threat ofpunishment, rather than just asking them to. It mayseem harsh, but after one or two times that studentsget in trouble, the rest of the students standing aroundwill get the picture and stop blocking up the hall.

Hopefully, administration will have the problems withB lobby gured out and xed.

Our minds are constantly being changed whether it is bfriends, computers, books, and so forth. Television is not anexception.

Honestly, television cannot be a helpful or hurtfulexperience if we do not let it. We are in control.

It depends on what you watch, freshman ChanceCopeland said.

Quite obviously, watching shows likeJersey Shore, RealHousewives shows, orAdventure Time is not going to help

It would help to have personal responsibility...recognizmorals and values, not the dancers and Snooki. Think of wyou would want little kids to see, Guidance Counselor SaSabata said.

Watching trashy shows loosens morals and respect,Sabata said.

The more things are seen, the more normal they becomThey may seem okay eventually.

Thankfully, there is a positive side to television. If youre watching television, you arent out doing bad

things, its inexpensive, and its a common way to gather friends and family, Sabata said.

Televisiona clichd waste of time can be of help tooA movie night with friends is a very benecial way to save

money and lower chances of getting into trouble. Not all teenagers watch trashy, raunchy television,Sabata said.

With the positive intentions of entertaining yourself bywatching an accountable show, television can be a helpexperience.

The amount of time watching television helps can varyupon info. Some may nd it helpful to watch Tiger Woodstake a swing before golng themselves, and others may Fox News the way to go in order to prepare for the electioPlus, as a kid, I learned a lot from Veggie Tales that I stillremember today.

Upon further research, I learned how reality television in

particular is helpful. Although some shows are hurtful, somput these harsh realities into perspective. Shows like Hoardand Teen Mom can put viewers into their shoes and realizthe pain in thesituations.

Many things inlife can hurt or helpus and, ultimately, the control is in ourhands.

Students are taking languages every year, but noteveryone can see the benets.

Taking a foreign language denitely helps peoplewith their cognitive processes because the morehat you learn, the more potential you have to learn

more, said psychology teacher Debbie Baanders.Ever wonder how people who learn a languageat a younger age seem to be able to absorb moreanguages?

When you learn a foreign language, it is mucheasier to learn it at a younger age. The critical timeor language development is, birth to 3-5, because its more natural to learn at this stage, Baanders said.

The power to learn a language is so great inhe young child that it doesnt seem to matter how

many languages you seem to throw their way....Theycan learn as many spoken languages as you canallow them to hear systematically and regularly at

he third season of the critically acclaimed series onAMC, The Walking Dead is nally here. After an

xciting nale to the second season of the popularombie-apocalypse program, the survivors are backor another season where the the zombies will be

more grotesque and the battles will certainly bebloodier. Last season, the show left off at the group

f survivors being split up after a walker (the nameiven to the zombies) attack on the farm they had

eeked refuge at for a short time. Leaving the farmn ames and after losing a few lives, including onef the leading characters, Shane(Jon Bernthal),

he group left the farm for good and once again, omeless. The season ended with the mainharacter, Rick(Andrew Lincoln) telling the group

hat he was in charge, and if they didnt like it, well, ave fun getting eaten by the zombies. This season

picks up a few months later as the group still cantnd a new home, until they come across the prison.he group must battle their way through the prisonull of blood-thirsty zombies to build a temporaryome there. Forewarning for this show: The Walking

Dead certainly doesnt hold back on the bloodnd guts, and it can get a bit intense. With season

hree picking up quickly, full of action and of course, ombies, this season is looking to be the best of thehree if it keeps up the good pace. With fans of thehow complaining about season two not beingory or action-lled enough, the writers certainly

eard the complaints and stepped it up this season.

he acting is still awless among all actors, and thehe storylines, within the main story of a zombiepocalypse, arent lost amongst all of the zombieghting and attacks. Just as strong as ever, The

Walking Dead is a must-see TV show for peoplewho like action and dont have a light stomach.
