Logos 1: The Word of Our God Outline
The initial pages of this lesson provide a general outline to follow, with a
description of how each activity can be conducted. Following the outline are the
Supplementary Pages, where you will find any hands-on materials that are required
to conduct the activity. If you want to use different focus verses, just use the
Supplementary Pages as a guide to create your own materials for the activities. The
Index of Supplementary Pages provides a list of all the materials that follow and any
special instructions regarding how many copies should be made.
Generally, activities in this lesson are written to be used in groups requiring
up to four teams. If you need to have more teams than that, adjust the number of
copies you make of the materials.

PRACTICE WITH VERSES
See Saw Verse (Mark 13:31)
Divide into two teams. Tell one team to say in unison ―Heaven and earth will pass away,‖
Tell the other team to say in unison ―but my words will never pass away.‖
Have teams repeat the verse in See Saw fashion several times.
Switch the part each group is to say and have the teams do the verse again several times.
Follow the Verse Road (Ps 119:9) [Logos 1.2]
Print two – three copies of the Follow the Verse Road pages found in the Supplementary
Pages. Cut apart the individual pieces that will form the Road. Create a path for the students
to follow by laying the Follow the Verse Road bricks out in the order the words appear in the
verse. For the second and third sets of the bricks, just continue your path by putting the first
word from the extra sets immediately after the last word of the prior set. Leave about a foot
between each brick.
Play ―Follow the Leader‖, leading the students over the path of words. Tell the children to
softly read the words as they walk over them. Allow time for each student to follow the full
path at least once, reading the verse as he goes. Repeat the path several times to help
reinforce the verse.
At the end of the road, ask each student to recite the verse.
[Give each player who recites the verse a gem.]
Relay Verse Construction: Open Bible (II Tim 3:16) [Logos 1.3]
The following fragments of the verse are on the Bible shapes that can be found in the
Supplementary Pages. [II Tim 3:16 --- All Scripture ---- is God-breathed --- and is ---
useful --- for teaching --- rebuking --- correcting --- and --- instruction --- in
righteousness.]
Print the Bible shapes on 4 different colors of cardstock.
Put all the Bible shapes into a pile. Divide into teams. Instruct the teams to run a relay to
collect the pieces and then put the fragments of the verse in proper order. The team that
correctly arranges the fragments first is the winner.
[Give a gem to each member of the winning team]
Missing Word Challenge (James 1:22) [Logos 1.4]
Make a copy of the James 1:22 Missing Word Challenge for each team, each on a different
color of cardstock.
Print the Supplementary Page that has the missing words written on it and cut the page into
small squares, each with one of the words. In addition to the words that will correctly fill the
159
blanks in your verse, there are extra words that could make sense in the verse as well. Make a
word set for each team, color-coded to match their Missing Word Challenge sheet.
Mix all the words into a pile. Let the teams run a relay to complete the verse. The runners
will collect one word, take it back to the team, and compare it the verse. If the word correctly
fills a blank, the team keeps the word and sends the next runner for another word. If the word
does not belong in the verse or is a duplicate of one that has already been used in the verse,
the next runner should take the word back as they go to collect a new one.
The first team to correctly complete the verse is the winner.
.
[Give a gem to each member of the winning team]
Hanging Verses (Multiple copies of all verses) [Logos 1.5]
The game pieces for Hanging Verses are in the Supplementary Pages. The first half of the
verses appears as cards, which should be printed on cardstock. The second half of the verses
should be cut into strips so they can be hung up so the players can search for the strip that
matches the card they have. (To allow all the participants to have a chance to look for a
couple of verses, print several copies of these game pieces.)
Randomly hang all the strips of paper that have the last half of the verses somewhere that the
players can find them. For instance, they can be taped to a rail, taped to the underside of a
table, pinned to a bulletin board, etc. (Just be sure to spread them out so the players aren‘t
knocking into each other, as they look for the proper pieces. )
Shuffle all the cards that have the first half of the verses so the sets are all mixed together.
Place the cards in a stack a suitable distance from where you located the strips.
Let each player draw one card to start. Tell the players to search for the missing end to their
verse—all at the same time. When a player finds the strip that he believes is correct, he
should show it to a sponsor to be checked. If the piece that is brought back is the proper
ending for the card, the player receives a point for that verse. He then chooses the next verse
from the stack of cards and repeats the task. If the piece that was brought back is incorrect,
the strip must be returned to the place where it was originally placed and that player
continues to search for the missing end to his verse.
The activity is over when all the cards have been correctly matched with the strip that
completes the verse.
The player who completed the most matches correctly is the winner of the activity.
[Give a gem to the person who completed the most verses.]
CRAFT TIME
While the group works on the craft project, students can be called, one at a time, to
recite verses to the leaders. They can recite verses from the current lesson or from any
prior lesson. Students receive 1 gem for every verse they can say.
160
Decorative Verse (Ps. 119:11) [Logos 1.6]
Make a copy of the Decorative Verse page for each of your students and allow them to
decorate the page by drawing and coloring a border to frame the text.
MORE PRACTICE
(If time remains, use the following activity to continue to review the verses.)
Trail of Questions (All verses used in questions.)
Lay long strips of masking tape on the floor, dividing a large open area into about a dozen
long sections.
Have all the players stand in the first section formed by the tape.
One at a time, ask a player to fill in a blank as you read one of the verses. If the player gives
the correct answer, he moves to the next section; if not, he remains where he is.
Continue play, by asking each player, in order, to fill in a blank from a verse. Each time
players answer correctly, they move into the next section. The first player to move out of the
final section is the winner of the activity.
[Give a gem to the first 4 players who cross the finish line.]
PAPER HAND-OUTS
Prepare a Take-Home Packet for the children that will give them additional opportunity to
review the verses. The Take-Home Packet should include the Review Sheet of verses and a
puzzle or activity sheet for each of the featured verses. [If needed, students can begin
working on the hand-outs while some of them are saying the verses to the leaders, one by
one.]
