Welcome to all new High Legh residents and readers of this Newsletter. Sometimes it seems that things don’t change very much in High Legh. Well, this summer there are a lot of changes. The biggest change is that the Preschool will no longer operate from the Primary School building. High Legh Primary School wishes to expand their intake to 145 and they need to reclaim the classroom that the Preschool have been using. Preschool are asking Ofsted to authorise operation from our Village Hall, where they will take over use of the Heritage Meeting Room/(Annex) making use of other parts of the building, in cooperation with existing hall users. Discussions will be taking place with groups who use the hall, to make sure it can all work as smoothly as possible. I’m sure that residents will be keen to make sure that we continue to have our “outstanding” Preschool available for the children of High Legh.

The “Big Weekend” in May was very successful, but the Community Association do not feel that there are the people to run the Village Show and Photo Competition as we have done for many years. The School PTA would like to continue, but needs volunteers who are prepared to take the Chair and lead the organisation forward.

Around us - the Bear’s Paw is currently out of action, after their fire. It looks like Cheshire East may discontinue subsidy of our local bus service – thank goodness that Jeff is still here to run High Legh Community Transport. The Oldfield family no longer own Broome Edge PO/Costcutter – we thank them for their support of High Legh activities and hope that the new owners will continue to offer a great range of products, so we can find much of what we need on our own doorstep.

The Big Weekend showed how many groups and businesses can work together to make High Legh a great place to be. It is much harder to sustain that spirit of co-operation, supported by voluntary activity. The new Coffee and Friendship initiative has worked well for older people. The Tennis Club is getting young people involved and playing tennis. However, we do need a wider range of activities. Could YOU start something new?

This Newsletter is written, published and delivered to High Legh homes, through the voluntary efforts of members of the High Legh Community. It can also be downloaded from www.highlegh.org.uk . It aims to keep residents informed about the breadth of activities that take place within our village. If you have information about a local social event or news that may be of interest to High Legh people, and you would like it to go onto that website, or this Newsletter email [email protected] or ring me.

The deadline for the Autumn Newsletter is: Sunday 24th September, 2017

Page 6: High Legh Pre-School RETURNS TO · 2017-07-22 · SUMMER 2017 Issue 140 High Legh Community Association THE VILLAGE HALL . WEST LANE . HIGH LEGH . NR KNUTSFORD . CHESHIRE High Legh

SOCIAL ACTIVITIESHigh Legh Big Weekend Did you take a ride on the Classic Routemaster Double Decker Bus as it toured High Legh Village? No?? Then you missed out on one of the most successful and fun events that the Community Association has organised, with well over 1000 visitors riding the 30 minute ‘loop’, really putting High Legh on the map!

The idea of a Big Weekend, involving community organisations and local businesses in the village, started when the Community Association were planning our 3rd Scarecrow Weekend. We hoped this would be an opportunity for all organisations to promote themselves. and in some cases, raise funds. Residents, organisations and businesses all participated enthusiastically in the making of scarecrows and there were some fantastic entries. Well done to the winners!

A big attraction over the weekend was the Classic Routemaster Double Decker Bus that the Community Association arranged to transport people round the Village. This was enjoyed by young and old. The loop around the Village allowed visitors to see some of the scarecrows, stop off at events and enjoy the activities on offer. St Mary’s Chapel was open; the Tennis Club and Bowling Club offered free sessions; you could try your aim at Knutsford Battlefield Live event at the school; visit the Observatory or name the turkey at Abbey Leys; High Legh Railway offered a free ride for children; the Garden Centre had colouring and face painting sessions; St John’s Church had a lovely “scarecrow wedding” and served refreshments;the PTA did a BBQ and the Brownies did Sunday Teas. It was a fabulous weekend with so much going on.

The Community Association would like to thank all the organisers, helpers, sponsors and groups and businesses who took part and helped make this, such an enjoyable weekend. Thank you to all the organisations who sponsored this event.

High Legh Village ShowIt is with great regret that the Community Association has come to the decision that it is unable to organise the Annual Village Show this year. Gail Coenen, who has done a marvellous job of being show organiser for the past 14 years, is unfortunately unable to continue. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gail for the huge amount of work she has put in organising so many hugely successful Village Shows.

In addition, we do not have volunteers to run the Photographic Competition, and therefore this too is to be cancelled. We have put out an appeal for help with the organising the Village Show but sadly we did not receive any offers. The Village Show has been annual event in High Legh for over 35 years and has been a wonderful opportunity for High Legh residents to showcase their talents. We appreciate that many people will be disappointed by the decisions to cancel, however volunteers to help with community events are sadly both ageing and reducing, with most of the organisation falling to just a handful of people.

We would hope that people will come forward to make sure these events continue in the future. Support would of course be given to any new organisers! Please let me or Gail know if you are interested. [email protected] [email protected]

THE NEXT EVENT WE HOPE TO RUN IS A Chocolate Evening IN NOVEMBER.

After many years of use (and abuse) we have decided that parquet floors in the main hall and side hall are long overdue for renovation and sealing. This is a long process that includes sanding the existing floors using a variety of different grits to get the floors as smooth as possible and to repair the floors where necessary. Once this has been completed the total floor area is given a coat of primer followed by two coats of sealant, which needs three days to apply and cure.

Consequently, the Village Hall will be out of action from Monday 31 July to Saturday 5 August. All existing access codes will be suspended and we would ask that no-one enters the Hall for any reason during this period. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause but we chose the main holiday period for this work to lessen the impact. Sunday Teas on 30 July and 6 August will not be affected. We have also ordered a new shed and this will be delivered on 7 July. It is the same size as the existing shed and will go a long way towards alleviating our storage problems and making the side hall and annexe less cluttered. We will also be replacing the tables in the upstairs room with conference tables designed to make better use of the space available. We have several plans for this room which include a plumbed in coffee/tea station and floor sockets to allow people to power their laptops without the hazard of trailing wires. The new kitchen continues to be a hit with all users and we have bought 3 new stainless steel trolleys to make life easier for the people who run Sunday Teas and who need all the work surface they can find.

And finally…Contact Helen Wright on 07703 194052 or drop an email to [email protected] (please note the change of email address) and arrange to have a look round and see how the Village Hall can meet your needs. You may be pleasantly surprised. Special rates are available for High Legh residents and charities..Mike WalkerChair of Village Hall Management Committee ([email protected])

WOW what an eventful 12 months we have had!

Mrs Corden started the year celebrating 10 years at Preschool and joins the many staff in the past who have worked at Pre-school for over a decade. We then had a fantastic day at the Village hall celebrating 45 years of Preschool with a fantastic turnout of former staff and children and families that have been part of preschool in the past. Miss Ernill celebrated a very special birthday and Spring brought a visit from an Ofsted inspector. This is a day everyone dreads but we were thrilled to receive an Outstanding grading. Most of our staff have been with us for over 5 years so it was a lovely achievement for them and a recognition of their hard work and dedication that makes High Legh Preschool such a lovely place for the children.

Summer brought an exciting prospect of moving into our own classroom on school grounds. School numbers have increased to such an extent that they will require an additional classroom to house each year group. After several meetings with Mrs Tottle and the School Governors, a visit from Cheshire East to explain the necessary planning processes dashed all our hopes. Unfortunately, ‘red tape’ will prevented us from continuing our partnership in the time scale required. Although we cannot organise something in time for September, the Preschool committee are still actively working on this long term goal. We are appealing to anyone in the community who may have the skills to advise or assist us, or support us with fundraising activities.

In September, Preschool will move back to the Village hall while we pursue more permanent premises for us to use. While we have enjoyed having our own classroom the hall has a lot to offer us, particularly after all the renovations that have been done since Preschool last operated from the Village Hall. We are confident we can continue to provide outstanding care for the children who attend. They say a change is as good as a rest and we are looking forward to the different opportunities that using the Village Hall will bring.

We are still very much ‘open to everyone’ so if you are interested in a place for your child please do get in touch.

High Legh Primary School

We have had a very exciting Summer Term at High Legh Primary School finishing with a fantastic summer production of Cinderella Rockafella. Our eldest children performed the production with much confidence and enthusiasm- and Cinders did get to the ball!

We finally had a glorious Sports day (after two were postponed due to inclement weather). We had a round robin of activities followed by competitive races. Our Year Six children ran the Sephton race in memory of two of our pupils and I am proud to say that Toby Francis won the boys trophy and Victoria Woods won the girls trophy. Well done to Tatton House who won the Sports Day trophy – but only by one point- very close indeed.

Our village school is fantastic; happy children; lovely grounds and excellent results – our recent Ofsted inspection underlined this fact.

‘Teaching is good. Pupils apply themselves well to their work, presenting it neatly and taking a pride in its appearance. Pupils behave sensibly at lunchtime and break times. The inspector found children to be well mannered and polite. The early years provides high-quality experiences for children to thrive. They are taught well and the setting is well led and managed.

The curriculum is good and gives pupils a broad range of experiences across many subjects. The leadership of the school, including governors, is committed to ensuring a good-quality education for the pupils.’

For our full report please go to our website http://www.highlegh.cheshire.sch.uk/

You will find it under achievement.

Two years ago we opened up an extra classroom as we had more pupils attending school. Due to our success, we are now in the same position again this year with our pupil numbers being 154 next year. The Governing Board and pre-school have been working closely together to come up with a solution to the issue that we need the classroom that they currently rent from us. Cheshire East have informed us that this is a complex project, and not as easy as putting a prefab on site. The constraints are time (2-4 year project), cost (£100,000) and legalities. Unfortunately, we have not been able to come up with a solution. As a duty to our children and to ensure we don’t have classes of 35 /36 pupils, we reluctantly have had to ask them to vacate the room. This means that as of next academic year, our school will be a one form entry school.

We will continue to work closely with pre-school to support either the long term project of trying to position a prefab on our land, or a more permanent solution. None of us want to see the closure of the Pre-school; it is important to our village and to the vitality of the village in encouraging young families to live here. If you can support the Pre-school in any way – an idea for temporary residence or being able to support a long term solution we would be very grateful for your help. Please contact Yvonne Edwardson Manager High Legh Pre-school [email protected], Louise Tottle Headteacher at High Legh Primary School [email protected]

With our expanding numbers we are currently looking for a mid-day assistant. This would be someone who would help supervise children during lunch times in the hall; as well as supporting play time outside. The hours would be 11.50am -1.10pm every day/ or days to suit. If you are interested please give our school a ring 01925 753713 or e-mail [email protected]

We say a fond farewell to our Year Six children who are leaving to go to Lymm High School, St. Bedes and Altrincham Grammar. You never stop being part of the High Legh school family, please keep in touch. If there are any ex pupils (or Mums and dads) out there reading this please drop us a line to let us know how you are getting on- we are always interested. We would really like to hear from you as next year we celebrate our school building being 50 years old. We are planning a really fun packed year, and would love to have any memories/photographs of our school sent to us. We hope to put these on our website for all to enjoy. Please send to [email protected]

Finally just to say ’thank you’ to a hard-working and supportive governing board and staff; I hope they all have a really peaceful summer and I look forward to working with them next academic year.

High Legh School PTA

What a fabulous year we have had! We have once again raised a substantial amount of funds for the benefit of the children by holding social events at school and in the wider community. We wish to thank everyone for all their help, support and hard work!

From the funds raised, in addition to supporting the school brass band and enhancing the children’s learning by purchasing new library books, subsidising school trips and funding an artist to come into school, we have also had the opportunity to refurbish the school library into a jungle theme and have completed Phase 1 of the playground renovations by adding 4 dens for the children to play in. We are now proceeding with Phase 2 by reintroducing a trim trail for the children to enjoy and hope this will be complete by September 2017.

As we move forward into the next year, and following the retirement of our Co-Chairs and secretary, we are inviting other parents to step forward to take on these roles and are holding an extraordinary meeting on Friday 21st July 2017 at 3 pm for nominations to take place. We are hopeful that new Committee Members can be assigned these roles to avoid the PTA from disbanding. If you or anyone you know is interested in filling these roles then please attend the meeting on 21 July 2017.

When I was a child there were lots of popular games that we played at parties, including one called “consequences”. Starting with a blank sheet of paper the first child wrote a boy’s name and folded the paper over to hide it. The next child then wrote a girl’s name, and folded the paper over to hide it. The paper was passed round and, each child in turn wrote what they wore, where they met, what they said and what happened, each time folding the paper over to hide what had been written. Finally, the paper was unfolded and what was hopefully a funny story emerged.

In real life, we all know that everything we do has consequences. From the simplest actions to the most complex decisions, a sequence of events unfolds which we would like to think are under our control, but have the potential to get out of hand. I wonder if anyone could have foreseen the still unfolding consequences for the political landscape of this country of the vote to leave the EU?. Those who decided to clad some of the buildings in this country with decorative insulating panels probably never envisaged the tragedy that would unfold at Grenfell Tower in London. It is alleged that a former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, suppressed allegations of child abuse and allowed the perpetrator to continue in ministry. The consequences for those who had been abused and whose claims were ignored have been devastating. Now, most recently, we learn that the man who was the police officer in charge on the day of the Hillsborough disaster when 95 people died, is to be charged with manslaughter by gross negligence. Consequences, consequences, consequences.

Such a tsunami of bad news can be depressing and divert us from seeing the good things that happen in the world. The Bible teaches us that consequences do not always have to be bad. Jesus taught that positive consequences flow from doing what is right and following his teaching, especially that about loving God and loving our neighbour as ourselves. While Jesus reassured his disciples that those who do bad things will face the consequences of their actions, if not in this life then certainly in the hereafter, he also taught that God’s grace can come into even the darkest of situations and that, to quote F A Alstyne’s great hymn, ‘The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives’. In these sad times when we are surrounded by so much bad news, it is good to be reminded that no limit can be placed on God’s grace, and the breadth and depth of his love for us in the sacrifice of his Son on the cross. The 21st June marked the third anniversary of the opening of the observatory. That was a great village event with over 200 people present including the High Legh Primary School Brass band. Our log book shows the very many people who have visited us since then, for our regular Friday night observing sessions and for special events like the partial solar eclipse and the transit of Mercury. Even with the long summer evenings we have had some good observing sessions with good views of Jupiter and its four moons. Saturn is now low down on the horizon late in the evening with its rings clearly visible.

Sunday 18th June was International SUNday and we took advantage of the warm clear weather to view the Sun safely through our special telescopes. There were a few sun spots visible and our Coronado ‘scope shows up the structure of the Sun quite nicely in the red hydrogen alpha wavelength. So astronomy can be a daytime activity as well, although, as ever, we are open on Friday evenings from 8 PM or dusk whichever is later. Admission is free- donations welcome.

On 6th April our own Brian Feast gave a great talk on his trip to view the Northern Lights with some excellent stills and movie footage. In May Prof Ian Morison talked about The Art of Astro-photography with plenty of useful tips on the subject, all in his recently published book.

Our speaker on 14th July is Malc. Beesley who will give a talk with the intriguing title “Measuring the Impossible” with a challenge for amateur astronomers. His talks are always entertaining and informative. After the summer break we have Dr Rob Crain from Liverpool University on 7th September (the 1st Thursday) with a great talk entitled “The cosmos in a computer” and on October 12th Prof. Andy Newsam will talk about “Astronomy – universal appeal?”. The talks begin at 7:30 in St John’s Church Room. Admission £3 under 18s free.

The observatory is also open for Abbey Leys Farmers Market on the first Sunday of each month. Do call in and have a look round. See our website www.highlegh-communityobservatory.com John Anderson

Supporting our EnvironmentHere’s some information on a variety of positive actions, particularly relating to trees, that have taken place in High Legh to support our environment. Woodlands do need correct management and pruning and thinning at times. We should look after the trees we have and we should plant more whenever possible.

High Legh PC and the Village Appearance Group have planted 5 new trees in the Woodland Walk, 3 commemorative trees on the right-hand side of The Belfry entrance and also a new oak tree at the left-hand side of the entrance to The Belfry. The box hedge and two trees at the entrance to the Belfry are growing well. We’ve also planted a new hedge at the Old School House. The School has an orchard which the WI helped them to plant, which produced some lovely apple juice that was sold for school funds. The PC are looking into planting to replace the tree on the Belfry field that had to come down after Storm Doris. CEC has no funds for a replacement. A Parish Councillor tells me that he has planted approximately 600 trees and a lot of farmers have planted hedges and woodlands. The Estate has wildlife areas.

The reason trees were taken down on the Bowdon roundabout is that Costain are building a new DVSA Testing Station with a weighbridge. In the course of landscaping the new A556 they have planted more than 280 semi-mature trees, around 60,000 whips and saplings, almost 117,000 square metres of shrubs and more than 7,000 metres of hedgerow. As well as enhancing existing woodland landscapes, the new trees – which will include oak, birch, rowan, alder, cherry, crab apple and elm - will play a key role in supporting, and in some cases restoring, mammal and bird habitats. As well as the environmental work carried out as part of delivering the new A556, the old road will be re-classified as a B-road with single carriageway operation - with the current northbound two-lane carriageway turned into a green corridor benefiting walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Part of the A556 scheme was that for every area of woodland lost, the same area of woodland would be created. Every pond was replaced with another for the newts, crossing places for the wildlife were incorporated in the design and a new sett created for the badgers.

New Chairman - At the AGM in May Cllr Will Hind was elected as Chairman and Cllr Matt Cooper as Vice Chairman. Cllr Gail Coenen was thanked for her year as Chairman.

Road Safety - We are still waiting for the results of the traffic management investigation on West Lane. HLPC continue to push for better road safety across the whole Parish. In addition to the issues experienced along West Lane, we are also continuing to push enforcement authorities on a number of highways issues across the Parish and ensuring road safety remains a key priority. Councillors will be meeting with CE Highways in July to discuss the effect of the A556 on local roads. Please do continue to provide us with feedback of issues and problems as they occur. Please make sure your hedge does not overhang the pavement so it is safe for pedestrians to walk on.

Somerville Close to Pheasant Walk footpath – your views wanted - Now that the new LED street lamps have been installed it has made the footpath between Somerville Close and the Play Area dark in one area. We have asked for an extra street lamp but Cheshire East say they are not obligated to provide lighting, only to maintain it and reduce energy usage and as such reduce carbon emissions. If the PC were to pay for an extra light it would cost £1385. Could you let us know whether you think we should pay this please?

We are also trying to get the footpath and Play Area cleaned up and tidied.

Bus Review - CEC are planning to make cost savings of £1.6m on its current supported bus budget. They are proposing to withdraw funding from bus services Nos. 35 and 47 and changing the route of the 289 so it wouldn’t go through High Legh. More information can be found at www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/busreview. Consultation closes on 26 July.

Please let the Parish Council know your views. If you need a paper copy of the review please ring 754818.

Old Oak - Contractor is planning on installing the tree back on Broadoak Lane week commencing 7/8/17 subject to necessary consents from Highways.

News from Costains - With traffic now using the new road, the team is working on the next phase of the project which involves de-trunking the ‘old’ A556 (Chester Rd). De-trunking means that Chester Road will be re-classified and redesigned and become the responsibility of Cheshire East Council. It has already been renumbered as the B5569 and work is being carried out to reduce the road to a single carriageway. The former southbound carriageway will have one lane in each direction. The northbound lanes will become a shared user facility for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians only.

Work is currently being carried out along the length of Chester Road and the junctions

at Mere and Bucklow Hill are being reconfigured as part of the scheme. This is a much different way of working due to the limited working space available and complex underground services. Work is expected to be complete by autumn 2017. We would like to thank residents for their ongoing patience and we apologise for any inconvenience this work has caused.

Policing - Our PCSO Gary Fulton can be contacted on 101 or knutsford.npu@cheshire pnn.police.uk. Please report anything suspicious to the CAT team on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency. Gary will be at High Legh Garden Centre on 13 July from 1.30 – 2.30 if you would like to meet him. Subscribe to our email updates by emailing the clerk.

Next Meetings: Monday, 18th September and 23rd October - check the web calendar for updates. Meetings start at 7.30 p.m. in the Upstairs Meeting Room. All welcome.

HIGH LEGH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – UPDATESince the survey of High Legh residents undertaken last summer (see www.hlnp.org website) reported in the last newsletter where it was clear that:

WHAT IS CLEAR FROM THE SURVEY FINDINGS IS THAT:1. the majority of people want the character of High Legh to be maintained;2. there is an appetite for some limited form of housing development;3. there is an appetite to see if we can create more of a Village Centre

Land Studio (the Master planners appointed to help us with the benefit of grant funding) have made good progress with their work with the Steering Group to understand how the Village works and people’s preferences more clearly. They are now developing options on which your views will be sought. This will embrace a number of options from having no new policies for any development (other than that which would be allowed by existing planning policy) to those where some of the needs expressed by the first survey could be met.

It will now be the Autumn (after people’s summer holidays) that there will be a public exhibition in the Village Hall and a questionnaire on the various options so that you will be able to give your views. It is vital that as many people as possible take part in the consultations and more information will be published on the website (www.hlnp.org), in

this newsletter, and via the What’s On in High Legh bulletin and Parish Council emails when dates have been established.

A register of Interests of the volunteers on the Steering Group who are giving a great deal of their time to manage this process effectively has also been established and is available on the website. Finally, it is important to emphasise that any proposals that come out of the Neighbourhood Plan work will only come into effect when they have been through a process of independent examination and a subsequent referendum of all residents over 18 which must be supported by at least 50% of those who vote.

In the meantime, if you want to raise any questions please do not hesitate to contact Doreen Walker, Parish Clerk at [email protected].

APRIL MEETING - Dunham, the Grey Years National Trust Volunteer, Peter Braun joined us in April to share his knowledge of the history of Dunham Massey House. He had intriguing tales to tell of two families who lived there; the Grey family and the Booth family. Executions, brave deeds and even a few scandals all featured in their fascinating lives and changing fortunes. In 1649 Thomas Grey was one of the judges at the trial of Charles 1st and his signature can be seen on the death warrant above the signature of Oliver Cromwell. In 1659 George Booth raised an army to support the Royalist cause and ended up in the Tower of London. However in 1660, the new king, Charles 2nd, rewarded him with a peerage. One family scandal resulted in the closure of Dunham for 50 years. Eventually in the 18thCentury the families of Booth and Grey became joint owners through marriage. In 1976 the family gifted the House and Gardens to the National Trust.

JUNE MEETING Best in ShowA dazzling floral display greeted members arriving for the June meeting. This was just a taste of the colourful evening ahead. Jacqueline Iddon is the owner of a hardy plant nursery in the Lancashire village of Bretherton. Her illustrated talk revealed creative areas where a multi coloured bottle wall, a Victorian fern house and interesting sculptures can be found. She gave useful hints on the growing and propagation of the many plants we were shown including some that are sure to attract bees. One year, Jacqueline achieved Gold and Best in Show at the Southport flower show. She has been involved in the Yellow Garden scheme in the past and hopes to take part again next year. The sculptures in the garden are the work of Thompson Dagnall and it was interesting to see film of his other work, which includes a sculpture in Dorset to commemorate the Tolpuddle Martyrs, one in St.Helens town centre depicting the town’s mining history and many others. Daughter Tilly Dagnall runs printmaking workshops in the nursery grounds and makes tempting cakes to sell at the garden’s open days.

RESOLUTIONS EVENINGIn January, WI members nationwide voted for suggested resolutions to go forward to the NFWI annual conference. Six were put forward; two were voted through – “Alleviating Loneliness “and “Keep micro plastic fibres out of our oceans”. High Legh WI debated the two proposals at the May meeting. At the annual conference in June delegates voted to pass both. The NFWI will now campaign on the two.

OUTINGS - Details were discussed at the June meeting for the planned trips in June, September and November to Yorkshire, Sussex and Wales.

OTHER ACTIVITIES - In July, the walking group will attempt the previously postponed 5 mile walk from Mobberley towards the airport. Book Club members are reading “The English Girl” by Katherine Webb. Craft Group members get together regularly and are making very special bonnets for hospital babies who are on ventilators. Cakes were baked for the Cheshire Show and talented members exhibited their handiwork.

High Legh Bowling ClubTime flies when you’re having fun, or so they say. It does not feel like 3 months since the start of the 2017 outdoor season, and now we are already half way through the season. Like most outdoor sports bowling is very much dependent on the weather, arguably more so than many other sports. Line and length are keys to bowling if you are to get your bowls anywhere near the target (the Block or Jack).

Imagine how difficult it must be to bowl consistently on line and length when you experience all the elements during the space of one match. This is exactly what the bowlers in the first match of the season encountered. Since then we have had the kind of weather you would expect in a British spring – damp, cold weather one day, bright hot conditions the next (or even on the same day). Appearances in all these conditions just go to show how much a bowler loves the sport.

Outdoor BowlingWe are at about “mid-term” in our league matches, but I have to report that all teams are well established in the top half of their respective leagues. Special mention, however, must be made of several teams for their standings at this stage of the season. The Knutsford Ladies’ team and Norley League A and B teams are all well established in the top three of their leagues. The progress of all teams and players can be found by clicking on the appropriate link on the “teams” page in the club’s website.

Club CompetitionsOnly one club competition, the Men’s Pairs, has been completed so far. (The Winners David Maynard and Rac Rigby are shown above with Club Captain Jean Mason.) The Ladies’ Pairs, unfortunately, had to be postponed due to a water-logged green. Hopefully we can re-schedule this for later in the season when we will have better conditions for bowling??? Three competitions are still in progress and there are two more at later dates. The men’s’ pairs competition, held in mid May saw some excellent bowling with games contested in a competitive but sportsmanlike fashion.

Congratulations to these members and thank you to all who supported the events in so many ways. The competitions which are ongoing are the singles mixed handicap and the men’s’ and ladies’ singles which are completed on finals day towards the end of August. A day not to be missed!

High Legh Bowling Club

High Legh Big WeekendThe Bowling club was pleased to take part in this highly successful event so magnificently organised by the Community Association. We welcomed a steady stream of guests aged from 5 to 80+ who were keen to have a go at Crown Green bowling for the first time. There was a great deal of enthusiasm displayed by all and a good proportion who showed a natural talent for this game. We hope that a number of these trialists will feel confident enough to visit us again in the near future and become members of this friendliest of clubs. We can offer free coaching and social bowling to anyone and club membership is available at 50% discount for beginners.

Non-members are welcome to contact our Chairman, Jean Mason, on 01925 753643 or email [email protected] to arrange some coaching and social bowling or, for the more experienced amongst you, to start league bowling.

Great British Tennis(GBTW) & Scarecrow WeekendOn Saturday 13th May HLTC opened its doors to the public for the GBTW and High Legh Scarecrow weekend. Over 100 visitors came to the club for a day of free tennis. Adults and juniors all participated in sessions put on by the coaching team and we welcome all the new members that have joined from the open day.

Coaching UpdateThe coaching programme at HLTC continues to grow from strength to strength both in levels of playing ability and the amount of adults and juniors who are joining in each week. During the current summer term April-July Emma and the coaching team will see up to 130 players per week. The new coaching programme has proved very popular as we continue to prepare our adults and juniors for match and tournament play. There are also plenty of adult sessions for all abilities during the weekdays and evenings including:

Mon (11am – 12.30pm) Wed (6.30pm – 7.30pm) Fri (9.30am – 11am) Sat (2pm – 3pm) * Please note this is a family session for adults and children where Mum and Dad can play, while the kids play for free on another court.

For any information on any coaching please email Emma ([email protected])

Junior Team UpdateWe are near the completion of the junior AEGON and North East Cheshire summer league with 11 teams having competed in red, orange, green and full yellow ball squads. We have teams in division 1 and division 2. All teams have done fantastically well with our U9 Orange team winning their league to progress to the play off semi-final on the 8th July. Good luck to Zach Thompson, Susanna Thompson, Marco Greig, Mickey Smutny & Noah Leary.

High Legh Primary SchoolOur partnership with High Legh Primary School continues to go from strength to strength with congratulations going to Year 3 pupils Nala Baker, Alicia Pemberton, Reuben Roberts & Oliver Dulson who won their schools tennis competition to get through to the finals at Birchwood, Warrington on Wednesday 28th June.

Summer Holiday Tennis CampsThe May/June half term holiday camps went extremely well with some great feedback from both the juniors and parents about all the new activities. Hopefully all the juniors who attended had a great time. The Coaches certainly did.

The Summer Holiday Tennis Camps will be running all summer: July Summer Holiday Camps (see opposite page).

Camps are available for all ages (4-16) and will be run by our fantastic coaching team. Please note the camps are also very much open for older juniors.
