Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages

are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.

Before Mass

If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the

Church entrance (narthex).

As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship.

In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times.

Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the

church on the opposite side to the entrance.

Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the

service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make

an appointment.

The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the

Mass.

The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to

those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also

customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.

You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and

prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins.

A Reflection

Let us follow that vocation by which we are called from life to the fountain of life. Christ is the

fountain, not only of living water, but of eternal life. He is the fountain of light and spiritual

illumination; for from him come all these things: wisdom, life and eternal light. The author of life is

the fountain of life; the creator of light is the fountain of spiritual illumination. Therefore, let us

seek the fountain of light and life and the living water by despising what we see, by leaving the

world and by dwelling in the highest heavens. Let us seek these things, and like rational and shrewd

fish may we drink the living water which ‘wells up to eternal life.’

Merciful God, good Lord, I wish that you would unite me to that fountain that there I may drink of

the living spring of the water of life with all those who thirst after you. There in that heavenly

region may I ever dwell, delighted with abundant sweetness, and say: ‘How sweet is the fountain of

living water which never fails, the water welling up to eternal life.’

O God, you are yourself that fountain ever and again to be desired, ever and again to be consumed.

Lord Christ, give us always this water to be for us the ‘source of the living water which wells up to

eternal life.’ I ask you for your great benefits. Who does not know it? But you, King of Glory, know

how to give great gifts, and you have promised great things. There is nothing greater that you, and

you bestowed yourself upon us; you gave yourself for us.

Therefore, we ask that we may know what we love, since we ask nothing other than that you give us

yourself. For you are our all: our life, our light, our salvation, our food and our drink, our God.

Inspire our hearts, I ask you, Jesus, with that breath of your Spirit; wound our souls with your love,

so that the soul of each and every one of us may be able to say in truth: ‘Show me my soul’s desire,’

for I am wounded by your love.

These are the wounds I wish for, Lord. Blessed is the soul so wounded by love. Such a soul seeks the

fountain of eternal life and drinks from it, although it continues to thirst and its thirst grows even

greater even as it drinks. Therefore, the more the soul loves, the more it desires to love, and the

greater its suffering, the greater its healing. In this same way may our God and Lord Jesus Christ,

the good and saving physician, wound the depths of our souls with a healing wound – the same

Jesus Christ who reigns in unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.

FIRST READING Be seated

Reader A reading from the Book of Acts.

Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord,

went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that

if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound

to Jerusalem. Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light

from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,

"Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came,

"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city, and you will be

told what you are to do."

[The men who were travelling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice

but saw no one. Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could

see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. For three

days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple in

All who are baptized and believe Christ present in this sacrament are invited to come

forward for communion. Those who are unable to receive communion, or do not yet receive,

are invited to come forward for a blessing. To indicate you wish a blessing, fold your arms

rather than holding out your hand for the Sacrament. When coming forward to receive,

please approach from the centre aisle only and follow the directions of the attendant

standing at the head of the aisle. Please return to your seat via the side aisles.

THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION:

THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN POETRY

As we all know, the gospels relate the history and facts of our Salvation by God through the

Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of our Lord. All four versions of Jesus’s life come down

to us as prose narratives, and it is through that medium that we learn His “good news.”

Throughout the centuries, writers have employed other kinds of language and literary form as

they contemplate the meaning of Christ’s teaching and Sacrifice. Poetry, in particular, may

provide a different access to spiritual truth, one that seems intuitive and emotional rather than

rational. As a literary and linguistic form, poetry offers an alternative language through which

we can experience and reflect on God’s message. Over the next five Sundays of Eastertide, we

will read and discuss modern and contemporary poems as we construct an imaginative and

impressionistic Salvation narrative. Through selected poetry, our series of church and guest

speakers will explore the Annunciation of Christ, His ministry, the Passion of our Lord, the

Resurrection, Christ’s Ascension into Heaven, and Pentecost. Please come. Learn about poets

perhaps unfamiliar to you and enrich your experience of Easter this spring.

On May 19, we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, which, in the Church,

commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The account of Pentecost is

found in Acts 2:1-21. In Christian faith, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity.

What are the roots of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit: in Scripture, in Tradition, and in reason

or experience? How does the Holy Spirit relate to the other persons of the Trinity, the Father

and the Son? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in us?

MOTHERS` UNION:

MAKE A MOTHER`S DAY CAMPAIGN

Once again the St. James’ Mothers’ Union is

holding the Make a Mother’s Day ethical giving

campaign during the weeks of April until Mother’s

Day, May 11. This is our annual

campaign to support our global programs,

Literacy $ Financial Education (MULFEP), Family

Life (MUFLP) and Parenting (WWPP) and the

Relief Fund. Many of you do not have a mother

still alive, but you may wish to buy a gift in

memory of her, or purchase a gift for a needy

African mother who does not have the means to

feed her family. All the gifts are designed to help

the recipients improve their standard of living, be-

come independent and provide for themselves.

Nearly all of the 8 gifts are under $50.

Shine a Light at $8 can buy clean water, food and

shelter to save lives. Mothers’ Union Relief Fund

offers emergency support to families who have

been affected by natural or man-made disaster.

Our members on the ground are able to identify

those worst affected within their communities and

help provide life-saving provisions.

Expand a Mind at $22 can help bring a family out

of poverty. MULFEP gives people in Sudan, South

Sudan, Burundi & Malawi skills and confidence to

start their own businesses or set up saving groups

as a community to help each other invest in small

businesses.

In order to take part in this campaign please pick

up a catalogue and order form from the Narthex

and return with your cheque, made out to the Ca-

nadian Mothers’ Union Treasurer, to the MAMD

deposit box or directly to Celia Dodds. Your gift

card and taxable receipt will be delivered to you as

soon as possible.

YOUTHWORKS

YouthWorks, an organization that provides

Christian youth with opportunities for service, will

be using our crypt as a base of operations this

summer, from June 16 to August 8. They are

interested in serving their hosts, so if you have

small projects, such as gardening or yard work that

you are unable to do yourself, please contact the

office as soon as possible to apply. Your request will

then be considered for inclusion in the schedule.

our group's questions for Fr Martin and reading

and discussion about "Listening". Participants are

also invited to bring a favourite poem or prayer

about listening. We will conclude with Compline.
