Introduction to hydro-test process

One of the final manufacturing process steps of pressure parts is hydro-test process. It is not only

verify welding seams quality but also it is a kind of stress relieving process. In mentioned test the

final product is filled with water and the internal water pressurized up to 1.5 of the product designed

pressure. No leakage and pressure drop is not accepted due to ASME standard.

In traditional method all of nozzles, openings and doors of pressure parts are welded by a blind cap

and after finishing hydro-test process, it should be cutted and welded region should be repaired. In

addition to row material consumption as a blind, it is a time consuming process.

This process can be extended to pressure vessel, heat exchanger, recovery boilers, transmission

pipe and tubes, well head and high pressure valves.

Basic tool operation:

FTN Tools Co. as a designer of hydro-test tools, presents different features due to pipe size. New

invented tool which was also patented, comprised gripping and sealing sections. As the torque is

applied to final nut, the gripping section will be activated and expand till segments touches internal

pipe surface. After that the segment movement will be ceased and increasing torque causes to

expand elastomer. Expanded elastomer will seal the gap between tool and internal surface of pipe.

Surface roughness of internal pipe affects the sealing quality so it will be preferred to grind manually

inside pipe surface. Increasing inside pressure will exert more pressure on elastomer and causes

better sealing situation.

Large diameter internal grip hydro-test sealing tool

Due to the fact that the larger the pipe the more sufficient force for expanding elastomer will be needed, so for

larger than 8 inch the torque process is replaced by hydraulic system. The application range is as follows:

- Oil and gas transmission lines

- Offshore and subsea pipes

Because of tool heavy weight, a mobile small crane is used for transportation and installation. Tool can be

designed and manufacture due to customer demands. No hydraulic circuit is needed and system is working

with simple hand pump.





Dual seal internal grip hydro-test sealing tool

This is the most useful tool for repair purposes. Not only used for cooling down heating region affected to

welding, but also used for regional hydro-test instead of testing full of welds. This means that just the repaired

welding is exposed to hydro-test and the volume needed for test is minimized. On the other hand filled water

prevent heat transfer from welding point to flammable gases in the plant piping.

The application range is as follows:

- Testing of a specific repaired region instead of testing of full region of product

- Testing of repaired flanges

- Low required volume of water and saving of used water

- Test of spools and piping sections before installation

Purging tool

Shield gases are us to improve weld quality during welding process and causes the welding region to be free

of oxygen. But unfortunately back side of weld specially root passes has not delivering protective gases. So

back side of the weld has substantial potential for oxidization and lower quality of weld.

By using purging tool during welding process, back side of weld if filled by protective gas and welding seam

is protected.

To do this, near back side of welding position should be sealed and protective gas should fill sealed area. This

causes better quality of weld which is inevitable in manufacturing process of pressure parts.





Pipe handling for onshore and offshore applications

As most of pipes used for oil, gas and power plant application has protective covering to resist corrosion, no

welding of lifting lug is prohibited. On the other hand in some cases pipe should be handled vertically to be

installed properly.

Due to customer demand, the pipe can be handled horizontally and vertically without any lifting lugs. The lifting

mechanism is designed so that the gripping jaws clamp the internal or external surface of pipe and lifting

mechanism can lift the pipe. For vertical and horizontal lifting one and two sets of jaws is needed respectively.

The application range is as follows:

- Lifting of covered buried pipes

- Lifting and positioning of offshore rig column

- Lifting of subsea pipes

- Lifting of well’s piping and tubing

Heat exchanger blind plugs

Exchangers are widely used in industries like oil, gas, petrochemical and power plant. As most of them

encounter corrosive chemical compounds the components will be defected after usage. Main remedy for

defects is re tubing but unfortunately mentioned process is time consuming and causes the plant to trip.

To sustain the exchanger activated and post pone overhaul of exchanger is to block corroded tubes. Tradition

method was welding of blind plugs to both ends of tube. That will cause deformation of tube sheet and also

not efficient method.

Using blind plugs which is composed of ring type gripper and special puller, saves time significantly. It is also

very easy and user friendly installation method. It is also ASME verified method.

Contrary to similar designs, it has much longer life time and also capable to compensate tube side pressure.

There are also air test plugs for both testing individual tubes before installation and weld testing of tube to tube

sheet joint.
