OUR MISSION

The Collegiate tradition is one of academic excellence and accessibility, in an environment of critical thinking and community spirit. UWC is committed to offering high school programs that provide an ideal transition to post-secondary education. The Collegiate philosophy emphasizes the need for students to become mature individuals within an atmosphere of self-generated discipline, where students can discover freedom and its complement — responsibility.

To foster our mission, UWC provides an environment of academic freedom, mutual trust and support, and ongoing professional development for Faculty. In a world of continuing change, Collegiate Faculty strive to engage students in a rigorous curriculum that will prepare them for, and encourage them to pursue, a lifelong love of learning.

We seek to enable our students to reflect upon moral and ethical issues, and to develop their concern for the welfare of others. The Faculty is committed to providing our students with structure which enhances their intellectual, social, and personal development — in short, the education of the total person.

High School at UniversityThe University of Winnipeg Collegiate (UWC), located in historic Wesley Hall (1894), offers an exceptional high school program to students in Manitoba and from over 30 countries around the world.

UWC is unique as it is the only full high school program within a university in Canada.

As an independent school, our faculty, tutoring staff, and full-time International Student Advisor help ensure that our students are on a path to success for the future.

THE UWINNIPEG COLLEGIATE ADVANTAGE

Regular High School Program

UWC offers outstanding university preparation for high school students in Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Foundation Program

International students who have earned a high school diploma in their home country but do not meet university entrance requirements can complete the Foundation Program at UWC. Students who successfully complete five Grade 12 courses to earn a Manitoba high school diploma will be eligible to apply to universities/colleges.

Pathway to University

• International Collegiate students receive assistance and guidance in completing applications for university/college programs.

• UWC students who successfully complete Grade 12 receive seamless admission to The University of Winnipeg.

• We offer university credit courses that assist in helping students transition to university studies including Intro to University (MULT-1000) and Academic Writing (RHET-1105).

Dual-Credit Courses

Qualified students may take first-year university courses in their Grade 12 year, earning both high school and university credit.

EAL-Credit Courses

Our unique high school program provides international students with English language and social studies instruction at the ‘E’ (EAL) designated level, in addition to integrated academic instruction at the ‘S’ (Specialized) designated level.

Customized Academic and Student Support

UWC’s full-time International Student Advisor assists students with English language assessments, academic planning, and ongoing academic support throughout their high school program. The advisor also provides student support services.

Winnipeg is located in the heart of Canada, making it one of the best places to earn your high school diploma.

Winnipeg is a diverse and multicultural city of 700,000 and is the capital of the province of Manitoba.

Winnipeg offers a wide range of ethnically diverse festivals, sporting events, high-quality performing arts, museums, galleries, concerts, and other attractions.

Manitoba offers students a beautiful natural environment — blue skies, fresh air, wide-open spaces, clear lakes, sandy beaches, natural forest, and four distinct seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter).

UWC is located on The University of Winnipeg campus which is centrally located in the culturally diverse downtown Winnipeg. Our campus facilities include:

• Direct access to public transit

• Free membership to the Fitness Centre (including indoor track, gymnasium, weight room, racquetball and squash courts)

COLLEGIATE ACADEMIC YEAR

UWC closely conforms to The University of Winnipeg academic year, providing students with a more thorough preparation for university studies. The schedule allows Grade 12 students who meet the qualifications to take university courses as well as high school courses in the same study session.

There are three study sessions per academic year. Fall/Winter Session runs from September to April, Spring Session runs from May to June, and Summer Session runs from July to August.

COLLEGIATE COURSE OFFERINGS

All students are required to take compulsory courses as set by Manitoba Education and Training, as well as optional courses that best suit their individual requirements and aspirations. Students will obtain a minimum of 30 credit hours for Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Compulsory courses include: English, Math, Science, Social Studies (Geography/History) and Physical Education.

Elective courses include: Art, Band, Biology, Chemistry, Choral, Computer Science, Digital Media, Drama, Economics, Family Studies, French, Global Issues, Law, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, History of Western Civilization.

UWC’s Partnership with Nacel Canada HSP

UWC has been working in collaboration with Nacel Canada for over 10 years. We have proudly welcomed over 60 Nacel students from around the world, including Brazil, Italy, Japan, Germany, Thailand, Colombia, Turkey, Mexico, Taiwan and China.

Nacel students who attend UWC enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience at a private high school within a University. Students can choose to attend The Collegiate as a one-year exchange program, or to graduate from The Collegiate with their Manitoba High School Diploma.

The Collegiate’s International Student Advisor works closely with Nacel students to choose an academic program tailored to their interests and future academic goals. In addition to a fully integrated program with high academic standards, we provide tutoring services and academic support from our outstanding Faculty. During lunch hours and after school, students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular clubs and activities.

Over the past 10 years, Nacel students have contributed to our Collegiate community, enhancing cultural diversity and participating in the life of our school.

Accommodations

Nacel HomestayThe Nacel local coordinator will match students with an English-speaking host family in Winnipeg. Living in a private home and sharing meals and recreational activities is a great way to experience Canadian culture and to improve a student’s level of conversational English.

The Nacel local coordinator provides support and advice throughout the duration of a student’s program, and in collaboration with The Collegiate, will ensure that students have an enriching high school experience.
