Notifi cation System
The Highland Central School District utilizes SchoolMessenger,
an automated notifi cation system, to alert staff and parents
to pertinent District information. The system is most often
used to notify staff and parents of school closings and delays.
Multiple contact numbers are supported, including a home-
line and cellular phone, and users have the ability to modify
the listed numbers at any time. The SchoolMessenger link is
found on our homepage in the Quick Links section. Login ID
and password information were mailed to parents when their
child began school. For login assistance or other help with
SchoolMessenger, please contact the Central Administration
Offi ce at (845) 691-1014.
Email Us
All staff with email addresses can be accessed through
our online Staff Directory located on our website at
www.highland-k12.org/contactus.
Call Us
We try to make important information readily available
electronically, but sometimes nothing can replace speaking
directly to someone who can help. Please don’t hesitate to
contact us by phone at 845.691.1000.

New York State Education Law Section 409-H, effec-
tive July 1, 2001, requires all public and nonpublic
elementary and secondary schools to provide written
notifi cation to all persons in parental relation, faculty,
staff, and students regarding the potential use of
pesticides periodically throughout the school year.
Highland Central School District is required to
maintain a list of persons in parental relation, faculty,
staff, and students who wish to receive 48-hour prior
written notifi cation of certain pesticide applications.
The following pesticide applications are not subject
to prior notifi cation requirements:
 A school remains unoccupied for a continuous
72-hours following an application;
 Anti-microbial products;
 Nonvolatile rodenticides in tamper resistant bait
stations in areas inaccessible to children;
 Nonvolatile insecticidal baits in tamper resistant
bait stations in areas inaccessible to children;
 Silica gels and other non-volatile ready-to-use
pastes, foams, or gels in areas inaccessible to
children;
 Boric acid and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate;
 The application of EPA designated exempt
materials under 40CFR152.25;
 The use of aerosol products with a directed spray
in containers of 18 fl uid ounces or less when used
to protect individuals from an imminent threat from
stinging and biting insects, including venomous
spiders, bees, wasps, and hornets.
In the event of an emergency application necessary to
protect against an imminent threat to human health, a
good faith effort will be made to supply written notifi ca-
tion to those on the 48-hour prior notifi cation list.
If you have any questions about New York State
pesticide notifi cation, please contact Peter Miller at
(845) 691-1040.

High School & Middle School Bus Routes
Private/Parochial Transportation Some students attending private and parochial schools will ride
a High School/Middle School bus route to the central pick-up
location at the Middle School and then transfer to a bus that will
take him/her to their school. At the end of the day, some private/
parochial school students are brought back to the Middle School
where they transfer onto one of three buses to go home.

Transportation ServicesTransportation plays an important role in the overall education of a student. Routes are designed for an optimal balance of safety and effi ciency. Parents play an important role in providing safe and orderly transportation by ensuring that their children know and follow school bus rules and by ensuring that their children get safely to and from their bus stop. Bus drivers will regularly review rules for bus safety and conduct with children. Some important procedures all students should follow are:• Always follow the directions of the driver.• Remain seated while the bus is in motion and keep the
bus aisle clear at all times.• Be at the bus stop fi ve minutes prior to pick-up time so
that you do not miss the bus.• No “horseplay” or “rough-housing” is allowed. The driver
must be able to focus on the road.• No eating or drinking on the bus is permitted.• Bus passes from the school offi ce are needed to go to
another bus stop other than the assigned, home bus stop.• Never, ever “chase” the bus. Students will only be picked
up at their designated bus stops.• Never go near the bus wheels or under the bus to retrieve
a dropped item.

Late Bus RoutesIn order to board a late bus, all High School and Middle School students must obtain a pass
from the teacher who has requested the student stay after school. Without the pass, students
will not be allowed to ride the bus.
Late bus routes run arterial roads only; they DO NOT serve every road. The criteria for
determining if a bus goes on a particular road are as follows:
• Middle School students may walk up to 3/10 of a mile from the bus stop to their home.
• High School students may walk up to 5/10 of a mile from the bus stop to their home.
If there are any questions about the distance to a student’s house, the driver will take the
student to their house and clock the mileage to determine the student’s future drop-off point.
