Bible Study Resumes Tuesday, January 13th.The Tuesday afternoon (1pm in the Parlor) Bible Study group will begin again and there is room for you to join us.  This year we are using a new series entitled “Animate Your Faith” in which we are focused on the Bible - how it came to be, who made the decisions on what to include, and why, how Old and New Testaments really do fit together, and how the Bible can inform our daily life.  In the Winter the focus turns to specific concepts of the Bible - God, Jesus, Church. Each week is not dependent on the other weeks so consider jumping in and join us on Tuesday afternoons.

  • Gloves, Hats, Scarves, White Tube SocksOn January 27, we will serve dinner to our friends in Lakeview.  We all understand what it means to try to stay warm in cold temperatures, but we have difficulty understanding how it feels to be homeless in cold temperatures.  If you see a sale on hats, gloves, scarfs or white tube socks,  consider a donation which will bring HUGE smiles on our neighbors’ faces. Thank you very much.  Ann Richards

Work Tour – 2014 Every Fall, a group of adults from our church travels to Biloxi, MS, where we assist in housing rehabilitation projects sponsored by Back Bay Mission. “BBM, a community ministry of the United Church of Christ, serves the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the wider church community by faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginal-ized.”

From November 9 – 14, seventeen adults from our church and three adults from Memorial U.C.C. in Fitchburg, WI, worked on removing shingles and re-shingling a house in Gulfport. We painted the interior of the 6 unit apartment building, “Home Port,” and also began installing doors, door trim, and baseboards. Home Port is an apartment building in Biloxi for homeless veterans. Several of us also served breakfast and lunch at the local “soup kitchen,” and/or assisted in Back Bay Mission’s food pantry, and/or helped at the Micah Center. The Micah Center is Back Bay Mission’s day time facility for homeless individuals. It pro-vides showering and laundering facilities, computer access, and counselors to assist in obtaining ID’s, birth certificates, and other resources.

Our group enjoyed good work, good food, and good fel-lowship. Once again, it was a rewarding experience to participate in Back Bay Mission’s programs for “serving the least of these.” Please look at our church website, cuccst.org to see pictures of our group at work. We look forward to returning in October, 2015!

Lazarus House 2015 Our commitment to serving Lazarus House continues through the new year. As you may know, volunteers from our church prepare and deliver the meal to Lazarus House on the third Wednesday of the month.  The hot meal is to be delivered by 6:30 pm but can be delivered any time during the day. On the same day, we also deliver items for a cold breakfast which is served the next day. These items are 1 gallon of orange juice, 1 gallon of milk and 1 large box of cereal. We also provide 15 sack lunches which typically include a sandwich, fruit, chips, water or juice. These are also provided for the next day’s use, so the sandwiches should be wrapped and packaged separately from the lunches so they can be refrigerated. Meat for the main dish  is usually provided and made available for pick up in the freezer in the church kitchen.  Your own favorite recipe can be used but suggested recipes are sometimes provided. Aluminum pans will also be available for your use. You can help by selecting any portion of the items requested on the sign up sheet.  This month our theme is football and we are preparing chili with shredded cheddar cheese, oyster crackers/Fritos and a green salad with dressing. If you do volunteer, please leave your email address and/or phone number.  Thank you for thinking of our friends at Lazarus House. Questions to Grace Caldwell at [email protected] or Diane Brown at [email protected].

    A New Resolve

Well, here we are. 2015. Have you made your New Year’s Resolution(s)? I’ve never been a fan of making resolutions. Possibly because I don’t think I’ve ever made one and been able to keep it. Will this year be “the year.” Here are some tips that may help us all along.

    1. Set very specific, attainable goals. Realistic goals will give you confidence and let you focus on the positive aspects of achieving the goal.

    2. Tell a few friends or family members. Support groups exist because having the support of oth-ers is really helpful when trying to accomplish a difficult goal. Ask them to help keep you moti-vated.

    3. Break it up. Self-control is finite. Make resolu-tions that require small acts of will power, not weeks of vigilance. For example, setting behav-ioral goals such as going to the gym 3 times this week, taking the stairs at work, or eating a healthy lunch every day for a week are more attainable than “lose 10 pounds”. You’ll feel good when you accomplish each goal and your success will help bolster your resolve.

    4. Lift your spirits (this does NOT mean “raise your glass”!). Watch a funny movie, listen to upbeat music, watch some funny YouTube vid-eos. Studies show that doing things that put you in a good mood will help strengthen your willpower.

    5. Write your ticket to success. People who put down their goals on paper are significantly more likely to achieve them than those who merely make mental vows. Post them in places you’ll see them often.

I invite you to join me on a month by month experi-ment (can we make it an entire year?) where each month will consist of a different willpower challenge. I have heard that willpower is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Let’s see if that’s true! Each month we will make one---and only one--- resolu-tion. We can follow the above outlined tips for success.January’s resolution is to eat healthier. I have broken this down to weekly, reasonable, attainable goals. I have a few ideas for a February resolution but I will wait and make the final decision in late January. So, I have told “a few friends”. Please feel free to ask me how it’s going and hold me accountable during coffee fellowship! I’d be happy and honored if you’d join me in this adventure. Email me and let me know your January goal! ([email protected]). Let’s do this together!!

January 23 – “Benediction” by Kent Hauf. Location – Susan & John Rodgers. From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind, once again set out on the High Plains in Holt, Colorado.

When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him; her devotion softens the bitter absence of their estranged son, Frank, but this cannot be willed away and remains a pal-pable presence for all three of them. Meanwhile, the town’s newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained rela-tionships with his wife and teenaged son, a task that proves all the more challenging when he faces the disdain of his congregation after offering more than they are accustomed to getting on a Sunday morning. And throughout, an el-derly widow and her middle-aged daughter do everything they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors. Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times.  Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. Here Kent Haruf gives us his most indelible portrait yet of this small town and reveals, with grace and insight, the compassion, the suffering and, above all, the humanity of its inhabitants.March 6 – “Crossing to Safety” by Wallace Stegner. Location – Anne & Bob Graham.Called a “magnificently crafted story . . . brimming with wisdom” by Howard Frank Mosher in The Washington Post Book World, Crossing to Safety has, since its publica-tion in 1987, established itself as one of the greatest and most cherished American novels of the twentieth century. Tracing the lives, loves, and aspirations of two couples who move between Vermont and Wisconsin, it is a work of quiet majesty, deep compassion, and powerful insight into the alchemy of friendship and marriage.

May 15 – “Pearl” by Mary Gordon. Location – Marilyn & Dave Schave. On Christmas night of 1998, Maria Meyers learns that her twenty-year-old daughter, Pearl, has chained herself out-side the American embassy in Dublin, where she intends to starve herself to death. Although Maria was once a student radical and still proudly lives by her beliefs, gentle, book-loving Pearl has never been interested in politics–nor in the Catholicism her mother rejected years before. What, then, is driving her to martyr herself ?

Shaken by this mystery, Maria and her childhood friend (and Pearl’s surrogate father), Joseph Kasperman, both rush to Pearl’s side. As Mary Gordon tells the story of the bonds among them, she takes us deep into the labyrinths of maternal love, religious faith, and Ireland’s tragic his-tory. Pearl is a grand and emotionally daring novel of ideas, told with the tension of a thriller.

MANY THANKS: To everyone who donated Christmas bags and cookies for our Christmas Happenings event on December 7th. Everyone had a great time and your baking skills were wonderfully enjoyed. SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTREACH: Residents of the Holmstad and GreenFields, both facilities for seniors, enjoyed receiving the beautiful handmade Christmas cards, handwritten cards, and pictures from our Sunday school kids. Several of our kids have received lovely thank you notes from residents. It is truly a blessing for us in the Sunday school to be able to spread the love that came down with Jesus’ birth!!! WE DID IT!!: With the combined help of members of our congregation and the Sunday school offering collected from October through December, our Sunday school has purchased 6 pigs at $120 each from Heifer International. How wonderful that we were able to exceed our goal of 5 pigs. The pigs will be sent to needy families throughout the world by Heifer International. For that family it will mean money for food, shelter, clothing, schooling, medicine, and much more to make their lives better. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. Our Sunday school truly “Increased our love for God and neighbor”. Look in next months Highlight for our Sunday school’s next mission project. COMMUNION CLASSES: February 1, 8, and 15 will find our 2nd graders learning about Communion - what the symbols mean, why we do what we do, how we practice communion here. If you are in 3rd grade and above and have not had the opportunity to be a part

of this special class and would like join the class, please get in touch with Tassie Brautigam, Children’s Ministry Coordinator, with any questions you have. ACOLYTES AND PSALM READERS: All children are invited to be a part of our worship service by either being an acolyte (lighting the candles on the altar prior to the service) and/or reading a Psalm. Haven’t done it before and want to try? Let Tassie Brautigam know and we can do a practice run prior to your first time. SUNDAY SCHOOL SCOOP: January 4 started with the unit titled Jesus the Storyteller. Jesus’ parables are like riddles that grab our attention and give us glimpses of God at work. These surprising little stories crafted by Jesus, the master storyteller himself, are recounted in each of the 4 gospels. In Sunday school, we will be looking at the parable of the Sower and Soils (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23), the parable of the Mustard Seed and Yeast (Matthew 13:31-33), the parable of the Bridesmaids and Lamps (Matthew 25:1-13) and the parable of the Worker and Talents (Matthew 25: 14-30). Have a read and see what insights you see for yourself. As always, many thanks to all of our teachers for their dedication to our kids growing in God’s love. HELPING HANDS: All 4th and 5th graders are invited to meet January 21st from 5PM - 6PM to work on a mission project UPCOMING HAPPENINGS: January 25 - Teacher’s meeting for the unit Jesus’ Death and Resurrection - room 114February 1, 8, 15 - Communion classes for 2nd graders during Sunday schoolMarch 21 - Easter Egg Hunt here at church - 10AM April 26 -Teacher appreciation SundayJune 22 - 25 - Vacation Bible School “G-Force” for ages 4 years old through 5th grade (the grade entered in the fall of 2015 )

    Who’s in the Pews?Marilyn Schave

By Sue PetersonMarilyn and her husband Dave joined our church in April this year. Even though Marilyn thought it may be too late in her life to join a new church and try to make new friends, she decided to be brave and try it anyway. Lit-tle did she know she would come across so many people she already knew or was connected to in some way. Marilyn has enjoyed the friendliness and the opportunities offered at the church. It has already been an amazing journey to step foot in the door. Since joining, Marilyn has helped at the rummage sale (where she came across the parents of her son’s prom date back when he was in high school), the women’s retreat at Pilgrim Park (where she met new women and connected with women she knew years ago; Norma DeMaar’s son was best friends with Marilyn’s son) and the Mississippi mission trip to Back Bay. She is quite humbled by the homeless. Life is so fragile. What a special meaningful trip and a great way to connect to the people at Back Bay. Marilyn also attends the women’s fel-lowship meetings and attended their Christmas party. She and Dave are hosting Novel Approaches at their house in May. She is not one to sit back and wait to get involved.

Marilyn was born in Chicago and when she was 8, moved to Glenview. Her junior year in high school, she moved to Lake Forest which was a much smaller high school. Being shy (which is hard to believe now) she felt the smaller high school was a great experience. Growing up in Chicago she went to People’s Church and in Glenview, the Glenview Community Church. Later she attended the Prince of Peace Church in Schaumburg and when she married Dave they attended the 1st Baptist Church in St. Charles. Dave’s brother was an American Baptist minister. So it was a change for both of them to make a change and come to our church - the United Church of Christ. But as Rev John Rodgers says about churches and members, “It no longer is so important the name on the church door as the experi-ence you have when you go inside.”

Combined, Marilyn and Dave have three sons and three dogs. Dave’s son Josh lives in Michigan and has 2 boys ages 11 and 8. Marilyn’s son Derek Anderson lives in Elgin and

has twin 12 year old boys. Scott Anderson lives in West Chicago and has a son 18 and a daughter 15. His wife was hired by Charlie Bell to teach at Munhall School in St. Charles. Scott’s in-laws are members Diane and Jim Parker. Marilyn and Dave’s cute dogs are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. More about Marilyn’s love of dogs and her experiences with them as you read on.

Marilyn lived in Middle Creek in St. Charles from 1976 until 1990 when Dave and she built their new house near the church in Elburn. Beginning her career, Marilyn was speech therapist in Texas and Phoenix, Arizona and then subbed as a teacher for 5 years from 1971-1976 until she was hired in Schaumburg as a middle school science teacher. Dave also taught science in Schaumburg where he retired after 34 years. Marilyn taught 33 years and felt blessed to pass her job on to a gifted student teacher she worked with her last year. Also while they taught, Marilyn and Dave worked part time as travel agents for Best Travel for 15 years.

In the 90’s when Marilyn taught, it became popular to team teach. She was the science teacher working with math and language arts teachers. One unit of study was the Iditarod. Together they taught all aspects of the race - the dogs, the racers. They looked at physics of the sled, graphed data and much more. After retiring in 2005, Marilyn went to Anchorage to watch the Iditarod. She started volunteering in 2014 and will go back again in 2015 to volunteer. She assists vets while they examine dogs that were dropped from the race.

To Marilyn, giving back is important. She has done inter-national mission work in South Africa and in Swaziland at a Care Center for kids with no parents. She likes to spread hope wherever she goes. She also has a heart for seniors - helping with social connections. When working with the homeless in Biloxi, she saw the need for connections - the importance of relationships.

If that isn’t enough to keep her busy, Marilyn also vol-unteers at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and at ECC for the performing arts center. She loves to work with people, with dogs and with plants. Her yard has a few “rescue plants” she has saved from various places. Marilyn Schave is a kind, giving person you will want to meet.
