Gnosticism laid hold especially of the female sex.
"For *of this sort*" (men who are covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more
than lovers of God; having a form or godliness, but denying the
power thereof).......*of this sort* .. "are they which creep into
houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with
divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the
knowledge of the truth." (2 Tim. 3:6-7)
Women it seems are especially bad to allow men who are filled
with pride, lust and covetous into their lives and then to blindly
follow their teachings. This type of teachers (the ones that preach
and teach to those with "itching ears"..teaching false doctrine and
preaching what they might want to hear but not teaching or
preaching the gospel)
Gnosticism (from the word meaning "to know")....
The Gnostics were a sect of philosophers that arose in the first
ages of christianity, who pretended they were the only men who had
a true knowledge of the christian religion.
They formed for themselves a system of theology, agreeable to
the philosophy of Pythagoras and Plato, to which they accommodated
their interpretations of scripture.
They held that all natures, intelligible, intellectual and
material, are derivedby successive emanations from the infinite
fountain of deity.
These emanations they called oeons.
These doctrines were derived from the oriental philosophy.
We still have this today, in many forms; New Age, Transindental
meditation, evenyoga can be a form of false worship (altho yoga can
be used simply as exercise,it is most often used with meditation
and relaxation techniques that are basedin far eastern
religions)
These men are not always so easy to spot.
Women, I am speaking mostly to you today. For it seems that
women are the mosteasily deceived and led astray by men who pretend
to be bringing you the truth,but inside they are raving wolves.
One of the most attractive things about these philosphers is
their self assurance and prententious righteousness. Women will
often believe that these persons (for it is NOT always men who fall
into this catergory today) but women will often believe these
persons because it is difficult to study the scripture for yourown
selves. It takes time and devotion. To study out a passage helps us
to recongize the false and the true.
We have been given one weapon. The SWORD...the WORD OF GOD.
Ladies I urge youto be prepared to use it wisely.
