Page 5: HighTide Festival 2016 Brochure

WELCOME2016 marks the tenth HighTide Festival. As befits a theatre company dedicated to staging new plays, the theme of the year is ‘innovation’.

We are staging an epic in the Jubilee Hall. The Sugar-Coated Bullets of the Bourgeoisie charts the transformation of a rural Chinese village from the Communist revolution through to modern commercialism.

The Pumphouse hit from 2015, Harrogate, transfers to the Royal Court Theatre in October. This year the Pumphouse premieres Girls, which takes us in to a war zone through the eyes of three resilient women. The National Theatre’s Rufus Norris called

STEVENARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Girls “a benchmark for quality in new writing of any kind”.

The Church Hall will be transformed into a mountain range for Pilgrims, a psychological battle of the sexes about ambition, colonialism and love.

Last year our temporary theatre on the Moot Green proved incredibly popular. This year we are returning with the state-of-the-art Theatre Box and our production In Fidelity.

The Path, our special promenade play about Aldeburgh, departs from the Aldeburgh Cinema and culminates in the Aldeburgh Beach Lookout.

This year the Festival box office is in the Aldeburgh Cinema and we are running a Festival Club in the East Coast Café each evening. Both venues have hot drinks and food, and are a welcoming stop-gap between shows. We also have events across town in the Cinema, Bookshop, Red House, Peter Pears Gallery, and the Garage opposite the East Coast Café. We look forward to sharing this special anniversary season with you.

Revolution has stirred, China has stood up and Communism reaches Rotten Peach Village. Over the next sixty years, the villagers are battered by the waves of New China, lurching from the extremes of Maoism to the extremes of Capitalism. Yet amid all the change and turmoil, one thing does not alter : their willingness to fight. This epic story, based on almost a decade of study, is about the ambition and unity of people who didn’t know what they had to lose.

ANDERS LUSTGARTEN

CREATIVE TEAM

Anders Lustgarten first worked with HighTide in 2015 on Lampedusa with Soho Theatre. Anders’ BA, MA and (most of) a PhD are in Chinese language and politics. The Sugar-Coated Bullets of the Bourgeoisie, about China’s extraordinary journey through Communism and Capitalism, is a much more enjoyable take on his PhD topic and took about as long to write.

Tisana, Ruhab and Haleema are normal girls. But they are captive in a world of smoke, dust and gunfire. Their hometown destroyed, their families missing and their childhood friends killed, these three girls have been kidnapped by Boko Haram.

Girls explores the voices and stories behind the trending hashtags and headlines that so quickly become yesterday’s news. This is a story of an enduring friendship, of love, strength and girlhood.

THERESA IKOKO

CREATIVE TEAM

Following the staged reading of Normal in HighTide Festival 2015, Theresa Ikoko, a Talawa Writers’ Programme playwright, returns to HighTide for her debut production. Girls recently won the Alfred Fagon Award and was a named finalist for the Verity Bargate Award.

Dan and Will climb mountains. They long for the next big challenge, for the rush of discovering something new. When they climbed Everest aged 18 they became legends.

Rachel studies folklore. She prefers people to adventures. She thinks the world can be ruined by discovery, and people are always lost in the process.

With 16,000 feet to climb, can love conquer ambition?

Pilgrims is about adventure, betrayal, and man’s impulse to conquer the world.

ELINOR COOK

CREATIVE TEAM

We are delighted to welcome Elinor Cook back to HighTide in this anniversary year following her debut production in HighTide Festival 2014. Since then her play Image of an Unknown Woman received wide critical acclaim at the Gate Theatre, and her play Ten Weeks premiered this Spring in a co-production between Paines Plough and RWCMD.

Page 13: HighTide Festival 2016 Brochure

This September marks the fifteen year anniversary of Rob and Lucy’s very first date. What better way to mark this milestone than to create a show all about love? As part of his research Rob underwent an MRI scan. His ventromedical prefrontal cortext surged when looking at a picture of his wife. However, it also surged while looking at other pictures.

Equal parts TED Talk and theatrical experiment, this is the show that combines a live on-stage date and evolutionary theory. Whether you’re single or attached, this is a big-hearted play for those looking to find love and those wanting to celebrate it.

Warning: this show might increase your serotonin levels.

ROB DRUMMOND

CREATIVE TEAM

In Fidelity is Rob Drummond's first production for HighTide. Rob’s previous work includes Bullet Catch (The Arches; Traverse Theatre; National Theatre; 59E59 Theaters, New York); Quiz Show (Traverse Theatre; National Theatre of Scotland); and Wrestling (The Arches). Rob is a trained professional wrestler and, until the age of 21, believed that slugs could sting you.

In the 18th century, Aldeburgh, then a decaying seaport, gave way to titled families. The smugglers were moved on, superior houses and the iconic town steps were built, and new pathways were created. Then the tourists came, and with them centuries of comings and goings concerning all types of affairs.

The Path gives life to secret histories in Aldeburgh, both real and imagined. It is composed of eight short plays designed to be listened to through headsets in locations throughout the town.

THE BROLLY PROJECTLook Left Look Right, the Young Vic and HighTide are working with a group of women, men and transgender people, all of whom have experience of working in the sex industry. Sex workers are one of the most marginalised groups in the world – often invisible, yet shrouded in controversy. This is a kaleidoscope of experiences; some touching, some tough, some hilarious. This is a glimpse of the fascinating stories of everyday lives. We would love audience members to feedback at the end of the reading and to contribute to the development of the show.

SYMPOSIUMThis symposium brings together theatre experts to explore the strengths and omissions in the new plays produced in British Theatre since HighTide started in 2007. Whether you regularly see new plays, or if you have a passing interest, you will hear the reasons for programming plays direct from the decision makers, who will reflect on the artistic trends, political and social shifts, and the funding realities that have shaped a decade of contemporary British theatre. LIGHT IN WATERLight in Water by Simon Longman is a play about the countryside and what it means to find your place within it. Teenager Joe is hurting; his grandmother Jane needs healing. On the other side of the fields, Ellie attempts to re-build her father’s farm. Into these two households comes Adam, a man with a belief so strong it threatens to bury them all. Set in a brutal, beautiful landscape constantly on the edge of fracture, Light in Water is about faith and humanity, about falling apart and being put back together again and about people trying to save each other from the silence.

Even the affordable housing is reassuringly expensive. But in the shadow of the glass and steel, some people feel like everything is being taken away. Since 2008, Lansons and HighTide have celebrated a year-on-year partnership that is unique. Lansons is a highly regarded reputation management and PR firm whose work is largely split between building reputations for organisations growing rapidly in the market and protecting reputations of those facing challenges. This partnership won ‘Best Arts and Culture Progrmame’ at the Corporate Engagement Awards 2014, and has been featured in the Evening Standard and The Guardian as an example of innovative collaboration between a business and an arts charity. Lansons donates office space, meeting rooms, reception services and IT support year-round to HighTide, which allows them to fully re-invest all of their earned income and charitable support straight into their work. HighTide offers Lansons the opportunity to engage with the cultural sector by attending their productions. Both HighTide and Lansons are proud of this mutually beneficial relationship, and hope that by being transparent about the nature of it, more businesses and charities will endeavour to explore working together.

WE RECOMMENDSimon recommends grabbing amazing fish and chips from the Golden Galleon or the Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop and heading down to the beach to enjoy.

Freddie recommends shopping at the boutique stores on the High Street, and taking a walk to see the Martello Tower!

Other than seeing a show or two, Steven recommends the sausage rolls from Munchies. Perfect with a dash of tomato ketchup. Oh, and the Fish Huts on the beach!

“I dream about you young. When I’m asleep you’re as young as the girl I met.”

Time passes. Roles change. People become different versions of themselves. From lover, to father, to husband, one man craves the past but knows his desire for it will destroy his family.

“Each one of us is gonna sit down one day and not be able to stand up, like we’ve disappeared to ourselves.”
