MAYOR’S MESSAGEI would like to take this opportunity to recognize the Huntsville Festival of the Arts for its’ continued contributions to our community. The Town of Huntsville has the good fortune of having such a strong arts, culture and her-itage focus that helps make this such a sought after program. I eagerly look forward to the twenty-fourth season here in our great town.

Our community enjoys so many great artists throughout the season thanks to the efforts of the Festival. Our Algonquin Theatre and other wonderful venues host local talent, as well as the best of Canadian talent, to entertain our residents and guests alike.

I would be remiss if I did not personally recognize the efforts of the volun-teers and staff that make the Huntsville Festival of the Arts the wonderful success that it is. Without all of the support the Festival would not be possible. So to all of you, a heartfelt thank you!

This year’s summer line for the Huntsville Festival of the Arts promises to be better than ever! As we begin our 24th year we can look forward to a broad array of talented performers. From Bruce Cockburn to Sarah Harmer, and our own Hawksley Workman, there is something for every musical taste.

We have an active ‘fringe’ program including our popular Music at Noon Series at Trinity Church, outdoor concerts in our new River Mill Park bandshell, and an Urban Arts Day Festival titled ‘Back Street’. Nuit Blanche North will be returning next year along with celebrations for Canada’s 150 year anniversary.

We thank you once again for your continued support of the arts which allows us to present these concerts as well as opportunities for youth scholarships in the arts and school programs. We couldn’t do it without all of our sponsors, patrons and volunteers. I also want to thank our very active and dedicated Board of Directors and General Manager who work hard behind the scenes. Their many talents, passion for the arts, and creative ideas play a big role in determining what the Festival brings to the community.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE


2016 FESTIVAL ARTISTCATHERINE LUCE

I enjoy creating visual stories with interesting characters both human and animal. The wilderness and wildlife around Muskoka are inspirations for this work and my landscape paintings. I enjoy playing piano and singing and often paint to classical music. I aspire to capture the rhythms, emotions and movement found in music in my artwork.

My creative endeavours have included working as a graphic designer and illustrator, painting wildlife murals in a Nature Centre and teaching illustration and art work-shops to children. I have had the challenge of creating commissions for Nuit Blanche North for three years, including large papier maché sculptures and designing puppets and performing a musical Marionette Show with my kids. I have illustrated for Muskoka Rock Choir and was North Words Literary Festival Artist for 2013. I show and sell my work at Mystical Woods Studio, my home studio in Huntsville, various Huntsville Art Society shows, Cobblestone Gallery in Waterloo and online at catherineluce.com.

Exploring dreams, the fantastical and the slightly surreal are elements that keep me engaged with painting and sculpture.

ABOUT THE WORK

Being asked to create a painting for the HFA was very exciting as I knew I could be imagi-native and combine my love of music and the outdoors. I wanted to convey the magic and excitement of bringing world class musicians to Huntsville. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could gather them all up and bring them here “Muskoka Style” in a red canoe? A flying canoe? Why not? I then set out making interesting characters from around the world in a dream like setting. Hope you enjoy my image for this year’s Festival.

Have the opportunity to encounter some of Ontario’s magnificent wild creatures and gain a better appre-

ciation for the wildlife around us. Meet five different animals and learn about adaptations, social structure,

habits and environmental threats affecting each of the creatures.

The show features an informal lecture about snakes, their ecology and conservation issues as

well as a session in which participants are able to interact, touch and hold the animals.

The play Ivy Green teaches how to be stewards of the forest. The Eco-play addresses the issues of forest

protection and introduces reduce, re-use and recycle in a fun musical way. This show helps us to value Mother Nature to give us a greater understanding of our roles

SCHOLARSHIPEDUCATION

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts has been supporting aspiring artists through its scholarship pro-gram for the past seventeen years. Over that time period, in excess of

$60,000 has been directed to support ongoing performing arts education, or lessons with professional instruc-

tors, with the aim of encouraging the recipients’ love of arts and enabling

them to further their expertise in their chosen field. Since 2012, the Festival has been focusing their scholarship

program towards senior students who are pursuing post-secondary studies

in music and the performing arts.
