We are very pleased to have the Roots of Empathy pro-gram at Highview. Once a month, a mother and her baby visit our Grade 1class-room. Ms Wand and Mrs. Carroll, who is a certified instructor, deliver the pro-gram to the students. Dur-ing the visit, the students learn about the baby’s de-velopment and growth through discussion and hands-on activities, result-ing in more respectful and caring relationships be-tween adults and children. Baby Aisha and her mom, Maryam, have come for two visits so far. The stu-dents look forward to con-tinuing to watch Baby Ai-sha as she grows.

Kindergarten registration will commence on Janu-ary 17th, 2014 for the 2014-2015 school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. Children who turn four years old during 2014 (born in 2010 for JK), live within the school boundary and whose par-ents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for junior kin-dergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring, details will be provided at registra-tion.

As you are aware, we have a won-derful hill in our yard which pro-vides our students with a great deal of sledding enjoyment. We strive to keep it safe. For safety and storage reasons, only Crazy Carpets are allowed. Crazy Car-pets can be purchased at most Dol-lar and Discount Stores. They are very thin and flexible. If it cannot be rolled into a tight cylinder and secured with an elastic band and inserted in a plastic shopping bag —it is not a crazy carpet.

Please help us to remind your chil-dren of the rules of the hill.

FULL SNOW GEAR (INCLUDING SNOW PANTS) MUST BE WORN;

Don’t delay and be disappointed in the spring!

The cold weather is upon us and will continue long after we return from the holidays. Being physi-cally active during the winter is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and recess is one opportunity for students to be active.

Students need to come to school dressed to play outside during re-cesses. It is advisable for children to bring extra pants and socks in case they get wet.

We keep a close eye on weather conditions, including wind chill.

When conditions necessitate, we may decide that students will re-main inside for recess or will some-times go out for a shortened recess.

In general, if students are well enough to attend school, they will be expected to go outside for out-door recesses.

We ask that parents be sensitive to the demands placed on our secretar-ies and not call the school to inquire about indoor recess, but rather send their children dressed for outdoor winter play.

COLD WEATHER

Please listen to Toronto and local radio stations and/or check the board website for information re-garding transportation cancella-tion due to inclement weather. Please remember, if buses are cancelled in the morning they will not resume operation during the day.

Yearbook Update Sledding Dental Screening

Dental health contributes to our gen-eral health and well being. Dental screening will be conducted at High-view by Registered Dental Hygien-ists for all children in Grades JK, SK, 2, 8 and others, as required by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Child Health Program under the Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols. Dental screening consists of a quick look in the mouth using a separate, sterilized mirror for each child. This year’s screening will take place on January 29th and 30th.

If you wish to have your child ex-cluded from dental screening, notify the Dental Program, in writing, with your child’s full name, school, date of birth and grade. (The Regional Municipality of York, 22 Prospect Street, Newmarket, ON, L3Y 3S9.

Silent Auction All who attended the Silent Auction and Holiday Concert on December 12th will certainly agree that the evening was wonderful. Thank you to all the performers and the staff who put it together. Thank you to Mr. Schuetze who produced the fabulous DVD of the concert which sold very well. Our Silent Auction was a very big success. Through the auction and the sale of the DVDs, we raised almost $4,000.00 and had a great deal of fun. Thank you to Mrs. Kantar and her team for an amazing job. Thank you to all the parents who generously sent in donations for the baskets.
