ABOUT HILLTOP FARM

If you’ve noticed what look like giant Oreo cookies in pastures along Route 25-B and Route 25 as you enter Center Harbor, you’ve seen the Belted Galloway herd from Hilltop Farm.

First established by Lewis Hanson, Charley’s father, Hilltop Farm has been a family-owned and operated farm since 1969. When they started the farm, Lewis raised Horned Herefords. The farm has grown over the past 46 years. Nestled in the rolling hills of Cen-ter Harbor Hilltop farm now includes 25 acres of wintering ground as well as 110 acres of hay and pasture land. Lew’s son Charley and his wife Jenn now manage the farm where they have raised Belted Galloway (Belties) cattle since 1991. Charley grew up raising cattle, while Jenn was a City Girl. After they met, Jenn fell in love with the Belted Galloway (after Charley) and has become an expe-rienced cattlewoman. Each year Charley and Jenn produce maple syrup, eggs, hay, and, of course, local beef.

Hilltop Farm’s beef comes from the 35 Belties they raise each year. Charley and Jenn chose to raise Belties because they are hardy in cold climates, thrive on a grass-based diet, and marble up just as well as more common beef breeds but without as much fat. Hilltop Farm partners with Moulton Farm in Meredith to provide local, grass-fed hamburger and spiced burger (sausage) mixes.

Hilltop Farm is committed to raising the best beef possible using humane and ethical standards. Hilltop’s Belties are fed forage (hay) that is 100% grown and harvested by Hilltop Farm. In addition, the farm practices good environmental stewardship of the land resources that make the production of Hilltop Farm beef possible.
