A BRIEF INSIGHTINTO HKPASS

Our GoalHKPASS - as evident in our name HongKong Public Affairs and Social ServicesSociety - has two main goals: to raiseawareness on public issues and toincrease involvement in contributingback back to society.

Emphasis on Public AffairsOver the past decade, we haveorganised talks delivered by distinguished guests from a widerange of sectors and backgrounds - this includes Mr Geoffrey Ma, currentChief JustiChief Justice of Hong Kong, Sir DonaldTsang, former Chief Executive andPresident of the Executive Council ofthe Government of Hong Kong, and Mr David Tang, founder of ShanghaiTang. We consider our society to bemore than a cultural or careers society,as as we provide a platform for studentsnot only to be aware of, but also to express their views upon current affairs, as seen through the LSECurrent Affairs Forum and the annualLSE Forum which have been widely participated by university studentsacacross the United Kingdom.

Emphasis on Social ServicesWe have liased with numerous charity organisations both in HongKong and in the United Kingdom to provide our members with a broadspectrum of social service eexperience. In the past year, we have raised funds for charities in many different mediums, including fashion shows, bake sales, and trailwalkers. Moreover, through hosting a Chinese Migrant Network Programme and a Christmas party for young children, wwe hope to improve our members’ zest to serve those in need.

Our Extensive NetworkWe possess extensive connectionswith the Hong Kong Economics andTrade Office (HKETO), Friends of LSE (LSE Alumni Group), and societies in mamany top universities in the UnitedKingdom, such as University ofOxford, University of Cambridge, andImperial College London. This facilitates the organisation of a widevariety of events to ensure a wide reach of audience in each event.

OUR PROJECTSEXPOSURE TO PUBLIC AFFAIRSFaced with a rigorous academic curriculum, students at the LSE may be less up-to-date with international affairs. One of the core values of our society is to encourage students to be aware of current issues in Hong Kong, thus strengthening their sense of belonging to Asia’s world city, as well as thehometown for many of our members. The aim of our events is to increase the exposure of public affairs to students as well as to provide a platform for them to debdebate and exchange views upon the issues raised.

Public LecturesThe public lectures held annually by LSE HKPASS involve talks by prominent speakers - most recently this year, we have been privileged to have invited the Chief Justice of Hong Kong Mr Geoffrey Ma to give us a lecture on “Why Law Matters at All?”. The event generated a huge positive response from both students within and beyond the LSE. Previous guests include Mr John Tsang, cucurrent Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, and Sir Donald Tsang, former ChiefExecutive of Hong Kong.

LSE Debate ForumStepping into its fth year, the LSE Debate Forum has always been one of ourlandmark events. It provides an opportunity for university students to gather anddebate topical issues through a competitive yet friendly manner. Participants include students from leading universities in the United Kingdom, such as UniUniversity of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and University College London.

OUR PROJECTSEXPOSURE TO PUBLIC AFFAIRSYouth Entrepreneurship ConferenceBuilding on the success achieved by our Solid Waste Management Conference co-hosted with KCL PASS last year, this year’s conference of “Creativity. Innovation. Business.” aims to promote entrepreneurship in particular business opportunities for youths in Hong Kong. We were privileged to have invited Mr Douglas Young (co-founder of lifestyle brand company G.O.D.), Miss Michelle Lam((founder and managing director of online retailer Spoilt), and Mr Kenneth King (co-founder of restaurant 海南少爺) as guest speakers to provide insight into their successes in business.

International Week: Hong Kong Pavilion in Houghton StreetWith the support of HKETO, we showcased cultural aspects of Hong Kong alongHoughton Street to promote Hong Kong’s background and appeal to students inthe LSE. Activities ranged from explanations behind interesting street names of Hong KonHong Kong, to photo exhibitions of Hong Kong’s past and present.

AO ReceptionOur annual AO Reception offers great opportunities for current LSE studentsto get insight into becoming an administrative officer in Hong Kong. With highlyfavourable reviews from the audience, it has always been one of the mostanticipated events of the year.

InterviewsIIn the past, we had the opportunity to interview Mr Allan Zeman, Hong Kong business magnate and Father of Lan Kwai Fong. This year we plan to interview MsAnnie Choi, an administrative officer in Hong Kong who currently serves as the Commissioner of Insurance.

OUR PROJECTSEXPOSURE TO PUBLIC AFFAIRSUpcoming EventsIn order to sustain the high standards and ambitions of the society, we aim to improve both the quality and quantity of our events in the coming year. We aregoing to introduce a Public Affairs Workshop and a Hong Kong Political and Social Situation Conference.

Public Affairs Workshop

TThe workshop aims to develop critical thinking among our members as well as equipping them with a better understanding of big issues happening throughout the world - prospective topics range from the Eurozone crisis to thefuture economic prospect in China, among many others. We will invite peoplewith inside knowledge of these issues to lead a discussion, and we aim to create an active learning environment that incorporates different disciplines among ourmembers.

Hong Hong Kong Political and Social Situation Conference

The conference will involve keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshops to attract students who are passionate about Hong Kong’s public affairs, providing a medium for them to engage in dialogue and transform their different states of emotion into action. We aim to provide a platfrom for thevoices of overseas Hong Kong students to be heard, and utilise our resources andexposure to contribute back to the local society.

OUR PROJECTSEXPOSURE TO SOCIAL SERVICESAs students in the LSE, we are fortunate and privileged enough to study abroad. Whilst studying in London, we hope to raise awareness on the existence of thosewho are less privileged and those who need our help and assistance. We seek toprovide members with the opportunity to engage in community work and toserve those in need.

Enchanted: Charity Fashion ShowWWith over 150 individuals in the audience and a number of brilliant live musicperformances, our models showed off their glamour in their walk down the runway. Through the transformation from basic to more sophisticated choices ofoutt, we hoped to convey the mission of Thames Reach, our beneciary charity who aims to help the hopeless and vulnerable to nd decent homes and to improve their living standards. Through the fashion show, we raised over £1,300(HK$ 156,000) from this event.

CChinese Migrant Network ProgrammeThe Chinese community, despite being one of the fastest growing ethnic groupsin the United Kingdom, faces language difficulties. In light of this particular socialproblem, our initiation of the Chinese Migrant Network Programme involved regular English lessons for Chinese migrant workers, with the focus of teachingbasic vocabulary that would be common in everyday conversation at typical workplaces.

OUR PROJECTSEXPOSURE TO SOCIAL SERVICESFundraising Week 2011The week’s fundraising activities primarily involved a bake sale, in which proceeds were distributed to Alone in London, a London-based charity whichprovides basic necessities for the homeless. Despite the temperamental weather,we had an immense success and raised over £400 (HK$ 4,800).

Christmas Action: Christmas Party for Children in Hong KongCCo-hosted with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and organised in the LOHAS Youth S.P.O.T. in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong, we set up numerous stall games and group activities as part of the Christmas party to entertain over fty local children aged between 5-12 years. It was a very enjoyable and successful event with positive feedback from both the children and the university student volunteers alike.

Upcoming EventsAApart from continuing on two major fundraising events in the academic year (these being the fashion show and Chinese Migrant Network Programme last year), we aim to introduce a weekly community service programme to encourage members’ involvement in social services on a regular basis. In turn,we hope to to create a sense of belonging to the community within membersand thus increase their zest to serve those in need.

PROJECT OF HOPE “Plant the seed of education, sow a seed of hope”

The Project of Hope was rst launched in 2002 by HKPASS, with the objective of helping children in rural China to improve their English. Through organising thisproject, we hope to play a part in helping these children improve their living and education standards. In addition, we hope to facilitate a cultural exchange.

Project of Hope Trip 2011TThe trip is an one-week volunteering trip to rural China in September to teachEnglish to underprivileged children in a designated local school. It is our goal each year to nurture the children’s interests in learning English as well as their appreciation towards the importance of education and their exposure to the outside world.

Last year in 2011, Project of Hope is proud to have brought thirty volunteers to Mianzhu Primary School in Sichuan, China, for a one-week venture from 13 to 20SSeptember. This trip was extremely successful with every participant returning with a sense of achievement, and additionally with strong emotional links established with the children in the four short days‘ worth of teaching.

Hope of the Night 2011Hope of the Night is an annual fundraising variety show, with all proceeds less expenses going towards funding the Project of Hope trip.

With the support of the UCL Chinese Society, the Hope of the Night 2011 provedtto be a huge success. There were well-delivered drama, music and danceperformances centralised around the theme of a simple love story between twohigh school students.

BLINGOur society’s publication - Bling - is a magazine incorporating reports of LSEHKPASS’ events for each academic term, students’ commentaries on public affairsand columns for students to freely share their views on other musings - such as lm reviews, travel reports among others, which are allocated in “Side B” of the magazine. In 2011, we also began launching online versions of the magazine in order to extend its accessibility to a wider range of users as opposed to limiting iteexclusively to students at the LSE.

Our plans for the publication and our website in the coming academic year 2012-2013:

- The magazine will be published termly, with the rst being an introduction and overview of the society’s upcoming events and an approach to attract rst year students, the second being a mid-year report, and the third and nal publication being a recount summarising the society’s successes. The rst and nal publications will be available in hard copy, while all three issues will also be available online as well via our society’s website.

- We will recruit subcommittees under the Publications division, and add a column via our society’s website that will be regularly updated on a weekly basis and will be solely devoted to recent affairs in Hong Kong. Through this, we hope to build a forum on our website to allow members to discuss and exchange opinions on various issues.

PPlease kindly contact us if you would like to receive copies of the previous Blingissues.
