Definitions
HL-RMS…Hydrologic Lab Research Modeling System…evolved from initial modules to test concepts and now is in limited released for research work.
DMS 1.0 – HL Distributed Modeling System Version 1…prototype, more user friendly version for evaluating operational potential
XDMS – User interface and display system included in DMS 1.0 (ABRFC)
History
March 1993, HRL/ABRFC PROTEUS DM Plan Short-term – UHG Warping (kinematic routing w/GIS to shift UHGs) Longer-term – Compare models…gridded and semi-distributed (lumped)…then decide on direction
1993-1995 – ABRFC project w/U of OK – Baxter Vieux…problems w/precip accuracy, crude software & inadequate hardware
History
June 1996 HRL DM Scale Issues – M Smith, Seo, Finnerty & Koren – Illinois Basin OK/AR
Aug 1997 MAP vs MAPX– Finnerty & Johnson
1998 MIT MAP/MAPX
Jun 2000 Wang et.al.–longer term MAP/MAPX
1998-1999 HRL M Smith et al – Distributed vs lumped for Illinois then Blue River Basin OK
Oct 2000-2002 – DMIP Illinois & Blue & HL-RMS
History
In 2001, OHD agreed to release the HL-RMS to ABRFC in order to assist with testing validity and calibration strategies
Most of 2002 – Focus was to increase the runtime speed of the model, look at potential calibration schemes, evaluate model results and devise/envision operational usefulness.
History
April 2003 – OHD released a Linux version.
• The Linux version was the developed to address the runtime limitations the program displayed on the Unix Platform. Model run-time speeds improved by a factor of 10! (not latest release)
-For a median sized basin (1859 sq mi.) and duration of 5 months: 5 minutes (Linux) compared to 50 Minutes (Unix).
History
Spring 2003
•Even with model run times addressed, calibration was cumbersome due to limitations with ICP.
-ICP inaccurately plots timeseries with differing time steps.
•APEX contractor joins the OHD/ABRFC team to develop DMS 1.0 (address the calibration & display issues, improve the model & outline path to AWIPS).
•5/03 requirements, 9/03 development, 12/03 test 1.0
History
May 2003 – September 2003 - Team roles defined:
•APEX focused on improving model run times.
• ABRFC developed interface software and associated documentation. Eval calb/ops.
•OHD worked on model enhancements and oversaw integration of software.
Current Status
October 2003 – OHD/APEX released the integrated XDMS and HL-RMS program along with a few add on programs.• Some of the features of HL-RMS (Hydrologic Model)
- Runs in a Linux environment.- Maintains rainfall inputs on an hourly HRAP grid Scale. - Can incorporate gridded SAC-SMA parameters as well
as gridded PE information derived from CAP data, or can incorporate basin lumped parameters.
Current Status
XDMS/HL-RMS Beta Release• HL-RMS Features (Cont)
- Separates the runoff componentso Surface flow: includes impervious, surface and direct
runoff .o Subsurface flow: includes interflow and baseflow.
- Calculates and internally maintains SAC content capacities on a HRAP grid scale.
- Can utilize a kinematic method for hillslope and channel routing or the Unit Hydrograph Theory.
- Generates a variety of user defined output gridded displays such as SAC contents and routing contents for a given hour(s) during the model run.
Current Status
XDMS/HL-RMS Beta Release• Features of XDMS (interactive viewing program)
- Allows for both a Calibration and Forecast Mode.
- Includes the capability to run the HL-RMS program from within the XDMS environment.
- Allows for text editing of the connectivity file and input deck from within XDMS.
- Displays a variety of overlay information.
Current Status
XDMS/HL-RMS Beta Release• XDMS program
- Displays gridded output of the HL-RMS Model.
- Displays timeseries output (OH-Data Card format) in a hydrograph Plot window.
o Six-hourly NWSRFS lumped model flow output.o Hourly observed flow. o Hourly HL-RMS calculated flow outputs.o Hourly precipitation inputs .
Future
Now - DMS 1.0 Released to WGRFC & CBRFC (within a few weeks)
Dec ’03 – Testing completed (ambitious) Early ’04 – Decisions concerning DMS 1.x
(further improvement/testing cycle) or DMS 2.0 (AWIPS)

Closing Thoughts XDMS/HL-RMS Model Shows Great Promise.
• Prototype in the hands of the field.• Hope for exploiting high space/time resolution data for convection
driven flooding in areas of the U.S. w/lower annual runoff (10-15in).• Flash Flood tool.• Inundation mapping tool.• Results thus far encouraging.
Issues which still need to be addressed:• Development of a calibration scheme.• Incorporation of a Snow Model. • Incorporation of Dams and Reservoir structures.• Incorporation of the functionality of Mods for forecast operations.• Need “hard numbers” comparing models.
