Poor road conditions had caused an initial incident in the northbound lanes that slowed down traffic. That caused another north- bound vehicle to run into the back of a commercial vehicle trailer. Three passengers in the northbound vehicle were taken to hospital for treat- ment. The driver, a young man in his 20s from the Lower Mainland, died at the side of the road, police said. BC Emergency Health Services said it received a call about a multi-vehicle in- cident at 6:48 a.m., and that the second crash happened at 7:30 a.m. Three ambu- lances and two air ambulances were dis- patched. Temperatures in the area were around –2 C at the time of the crash, with black ice conditions. Merritt’s trauma room now state-of-the-art Wednes- day after- noon, the NV Healthcare Endowment Foundation unveiled a plaque in the Merritt hospi- tal’s new trau- ma room in the expanded ER depart- ment, that honours Teck Highland Val- ley Copper. Merritt is now home to one of the province’s most high-tech state-of- the-art facilities, thanks to 2 $80,000 do- nations from Teck HVC to purchase 2 ful- ly suspended & articulated boom systems which replace some 15 carts with equip- ment & supplies, for the 2 trauma beds. What the new facility has meant for the community is that ER physicians from around the region have been re- cruited to take turns being on call in Emergency. The pool of physicians has now grown from 3 local doctors (who had to take time out of their clinic hours to cover Emergency) to 4-7 additional physicians who are now on rotation — and 2 more will start in January. And the equipment has opened up opportunities for new programs for the hospital, train- ing both trauma nurses & doctors. So in a small ‘rural’ community, so close to the multitude of accidents on the Coqui- halla, and where staff cares for 50 patients per day compared to 10/day in other rural communities, our facilities & level of care has just taken a giant leap into the future, and is putting Merritt on the map! Thoughts from outside the box Random Spartan facts Did you know… The ancient Spar- tans were vegetarians. They also kept long hair, for it was a sign of freedom and power, and Spartan men were expected to be fit and ready for war until the age of 60. In this effort, Spartan boys were tak- en from their homes at the age of 7 and training as warriors. These people were further taught to dismiss material wealth and Sparta coins were made of iron and not silver or gold. Interestingly, vegetarianism, keeping long hair, and a lack of love for material wealth (mammon or maya) are attributes common to a spiritually aligned person. Can it be that the Spartans were not only warriors but also students and masters of the spiritual realm? Similar perhaps to the Saint-Soldiers introduced by the Great Gobind Singh, with the establishment of the Khalsa, in the year 1699. — Mike Bhangu, Amazon best-selling author MERRITT PICKLEBALL CLUB Playing Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30-11:00 am CMS Gym Tuesday 6:30-8:30 pm Merritt Civic Centre and Thursday 6:30-8:30 pm CMS Gym Demo paddles and instructions available FMI call Gary 250-280-0105 or Ayton 250-378-5691 today!
