It has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David, ensuring its original manual wind mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
In terms of the highly Art Deco Elgin watches made for women, the “Lady & Tiger” enameled case model is arguably the most sought-after, followed by a limited series of Parisienne models created for Elgin by noted French designers of the era, including LeLong, Agnes, Premet and Jenny – “all great Couturiers of the Rue de la Paix.” This particular model was created by the noted designer Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946), founder of the "House of Lanvin." It is prominently featured (on page 38) in the authoritative collectors' book “American Wristwatches – Five Decades of Style and Design” by Edward Faber and Stewart Unger.
Madame Lanvin enjoyed a career that spanned 50 years, dressing actresses including Mary Pickford, Marlene Dietrich and Yvonne Printemps in the 1920s and 1930s. She also had "Royal" clients, including the Queen of Italy, the Queen of Romania and English princesses.
The ivory color, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition – professionally restored to its original status. It features a 60 minute outer track border, black enamel painted Deco-style numbers and original blued steel Dagger tip hands. The 14kt White Gold Filled case is a three-piece example in excellent order, complete with abstract sunray designs of inlaid enamel – in excellent condition. The original winding crown is a matching white gold finish and in excellent shape, operating smoothly.
Turning

the watch over, I note that the 14k white gold filled back lid is in excellent order – absolutely no wear or engravings past or present, perhaps a few pinprick marks. Peeking inside I find a clean and original Seven Jewel triplex type manual wind movement (Caliber 488, 18/0 Size) that is signed ELGIN – U.S.A with serial number # 32,293,333 – dating the watch to 1928 per company production records. The inside of the case lid is signed Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co. – Star Watch Case Co. - 14K Gold Filled – 8780871.
This Madame Lanvin has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 12mm (1/2 inch) matte black leather strap with matching color buckle – especially designed for solid wire lug watches such as this. This has to be one of the nicest Parisienne models I’ve had this year - perhaps you’ll purchase this one and get hooked…eventually collecting the entire series! I think that would be a lot of fun.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. I treat buyers as I like to be treated: with courtesy and respect. Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, having first chosen the name Columbian Watch Co. but this name was already copyrighted by the Waterbury Co. The name "Hamilton" was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant

watch and during the WWI period a small line of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
Here is a truly nice example of a men’s “MARTIN” model by Hamilton, a Cushion form model that was first introduced in 1941. This fancy Ball Lug beauty is 10kt Yellow Gold filled ad in excellent condition inside and out – including a flawless Butler-finish enamel dial.
Triple signed (case, dial and mechanism), it measures 35mm end to end and 27mm in width (28.8mm with crown). This works out to be 1-3/8 inches long by just shy of 1-1/8 inches wide (not counting the winding crown). It is powered by its original 17 jewel (987A Grade) manual wind Hamilton mechanism that’s been fully serviced by my talented watchmaker David to ensure it running very well and keeping accurate time.
The silver, Butler enamel finished dial is in flawless condition - professionally refinished by those who do Hamilton dials the best. It features a crisp 60 minute outer track border, applied 18k Solid Gold numbers, gold metal Leaf-style hands and a cushion-shaped sub-seconds dial with sweep gold seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12 in gold lettering.
The solid glass crystal is flawless condition The 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled case is a Cushion form, complete with fancy ball-shaped lugs that this model is known for. This case is in excellent PLUS condition with no wear – the nicest Martin case that I’ve seen. The winding crown is a matching gold finish and, I believe, original. It winds and sets smoothly and is in excellent shape.
Turning the watch over I find a flawless back lid that has zero wear or engravings, past or present. It is stamped “10k Gold Filled” and is in flawless shape. Peeking inside I find a topnotch 17 jewel, manual wind movement signed Hamilton, 17 Jewels, [Grade] 987A, USA - 480465. The inside of the case lid is stamped HAMILTON WATCH CO., LANCASTER PA., WADSWORTH 10K GOLD FILLED – 00521.
This good looking Art Deco timepiece has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. It is fitted on a new black 16mm deBeer handcrafted lizard grain calf leather strap with matching gold buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. I think you would be hard pressed to find a nicer Martin model – if you think the photos are nice you should see it in person!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Among watch collectors, the Omega Watch Co. of Switzerland, a firm founded by Louis Brandt of Biel in 1848, is one of the most renowned brands of timepieces. In 1894 a new caliber bore the name of Omega for the first time, and since then it has produced some of the finest caliber wristwatches money can buy. Omega is my favorite Swiss watch firm as well, combining those qualities of name brand recognition, high quality and (comparative) value that are important to the seasoned watch collector.
I am pleased to offer for sale this excellent and original vintage ladies Omega timepiece...crafted of 14kt Solid Yellow Gold and dating to ca 1977. This fancy “Rope Bezel” dress watch appears as though it was tucked away somewhere safe for 30 odd years and is in superb condition inside and out.
It is quadruple-signed for Omega and measures 24mm end to end and 17mm in width (19mm with original Omega-signed crown). This equates to just shy of 1 inch long by 5/8 of an inch wide, not counting the Omega crown and is fitted on an alligator calf leather band that will fit a wrist 5-1/2 inches to 6-5/8 inches in size. My expert watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 17 jewel, manual wind Swiss made Omega mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original gold, enamel finished dial is in mint condition and without flaw. It features raised gold ‘dot’ hour markers, original black lacquered Baton-style hands and a solid gold applied XII. Signed OMEGA below the 12 marker (with Omega logo) and SWISS at the base of the dial, hard to see in the photo due to the curvature of the crystal.
Speaking of the crystal, it is the original acrylic example in flawless shape. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent PLUS shape, complete with fancy rope design bezel. The original yellow gold finished winding crown is also excellent, stamped with the Omega symbol and winding smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent PLUS condition with no wear or engravings, clearly stamped 14K GOLD at the edge. Inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel movement that is signed OMEGA WATCH CO., SWISS, SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, [CALIBER] 1100. The serial number is #40,189,614 - dating this watch to ca 1977 as per company production records. The inside of the back lid is stamped

It is fitted on a new black 8mm alligator (grain) calf leather strap with gold finished buckle that will fit a wrist 5-1/2 to 6-5/8 inches around. Timepieces from the Charles Tissot Watch Co. of Switzerland are among my favorite Swiss watches, very high quality and nicely designed. The firm was founded in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. It is famous for its “Tsars Watch” (Russian Imperial Guard, 1904), “Banana” Exploding Tank (1915), the first antimagnetic watch (1930), and the Navigator (released 1953).
> In 1925, the Omega Watch Co. hired Paul Tissot as its commercial director; in 1930 the two firms merged under the official name Societe Suisse pour l'lndustrie Horlogere (SSIH), with headquarters in Geneva. Later, Lemania would join this group.
The following model is the result of the partnership and, as watch historian Bruce Shawkey correctly points out (in the Nat’l Association of

Watch & Clock Collectors August 2003 Bulletin), Tissot were not the lower price option to Omega but, rather, a complementary brand of equal stature.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the firm, a men’s SEASTAR SONOROUS “Wrist Alarm” model that dates to the late 1960s. This timepiece is in excellent, original condition and is just the second Tissot alarm watch I’ve ever offered for sale.
> Triple-signed, it measures 42mm lug tip to lug tip and 35mm in width (37mm with crowns). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by just over 1-3/8 inches wide, not counting the alarm crown and winding/setting crown. Its original 17 jewel, manual wind Swiss mechanism has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in great condition – untouched since it left the factory and with a warm, even patina of age – very nice. It features silver and black hour markers, a 60 second outer track border, an inner ALARM track, original white lacquered black metal hands, an ORANGE ‘sweep’ center seconds hand and original red alarm hand. Signed TISSOT below the 12 and SEASTAR SONOROUS above the 6. At the base it is stamped SWISS MADE.
The hardened acrylic (armored) crystal is in excellent condition. The two-piece case is solid stainless steel with a brushed bezel and polished sides – it is in excellent PLUS shape. There are two crowns on this watch. The bottom crown winds the watch and sets the time like a conventional crown would do. The top crown is used to adjust the alarm hand and you do this by turning it clockwise and the hand will move backwards (counterclockwise) which is correct. To “set” the alarm you then pull the top crown out. This alarm function works great folks and it buzzes nicely!
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is a screw-down, stainless steel example in excellent PLUS condition with absolutely no wear. Removing this lid reveals an inner metal dust cover, always a nice feature to see.
Removing the dust cover reveals a clean and higher-grade mechanism stamped Chs. Tissot & Fils, Seventeen 17 Jewels, Swiss TWA. The serial number is 9,874,345. The inside of the case lid is stamped CHS. TISSOT & FILS, TISSOT, FAB. My favorite among favorite U.S. watch firms is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices!) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
I am very pleased to offer for sale what I think is one of the nicest ladies Art Deco Elgin watch I have ever seen before –a finely engraved 14kt white gold filled model set with four blue sapphires and two genuine diamonds. This is the first time I have ever sold (let alone seen) this 1928 model before and the combination of jade green inlaid enameling with black inlaid

Page 12: holben/Descriptions/October 3, 2011.… · Web view My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company,

enameling on the bezel is simply beautiful.
This triple-signed timepiece measures 32mm end to end and 17mm in width (19.5mm with original engraved and beaded crown). This works out to be 1-1/4 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide, not including the fancy original winding crown. It is powered by its original triplex-style, manual wind Elgin mechanism that has been fully serviced by my valued watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The unique diamond-shaped dial is matte enamel finished and in flawless condition, restored to its original status and looking very sharp. It features a 60 minute checkered outer track border, original blue steel Fuseaux style hands and black Art Deco numerals. Signed ELGIN below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in mint condition, a new old stock addition removed for the photos. The 14 Karat White Gold filled case is a Tour de Force of engraved detailing, both on the bezel and wrapping around the sides. Overall condition is excellent with just a bit of rub to the gold finish on the bezel corners. The highlight are its four faceted sapphires and two genuine diamonds – all nice and secure with NO flaws. Note as well the JADE green inlaid enameling bordering the bezel with inlaid black enamel panels bordering the dial itself – excellent. The matching and original white gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, a finely engraved and beaded example that nicely complements the design. It winds and sets smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent shape with no wear or personal engravings. Peeking inside I find a Seven 7 Jewel (Grade 488, 18/0 Size) manual wind mechanism signed Elgin, U.S.A with serial number # 32,404,341 – dating the watch to 1928 as per published production records. The inside of the case lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., 14k Gold Filled - Illinois Watch Case Co., Elgin with case number below.
This timepiece has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 12mm black leather strap with matching color buckle (designed for wire lug watches such as this), ready to worn and enjoyed. Elgin was arguably the best of the American watch makers when it came to Art Deco designs and I would have to say this honestly ranks in the TOP 3 that they ever did. It also took me 25 years of collecting Elgin watches to come across this model so I can’t say for sure I’ll ever have another like it again.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Founded by Ernest Francillon and Auguste Agassiz in the year 1832, the Longines Watch Co. of Switzerland was established in the “Long Meadows” (translated: Longines) near the town of St. Imier. Winner of countless horology awards, their wristwatches are among the best in the world, on par with the “big boys” of the Swiss watch making profession including its chief rival Omega.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Longines timepiece, a men’s 10kt Yellow Gold filled Tank form model that dates to ca 1947. This watch is quadruple-signed for Longines – on the dial, winding crown, case and mechanism.
It measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 26mm in width (27.5mm with original signed winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches long by just over 1 inch wide, not including the Longines-signed crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind Longines mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black enamel finished dial has been professionally restored and is in excellent condition. It features a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold Arabic numerals, original gold metal Leaf-style hands and a separate seconds dial (slightly recessed) with ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed LONGINES below the 12 and SWISS at the base of the dial.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent shape with no flaws (removed in some photos to minimize glare). The case is a two-piece design that is 10 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and it is in excellent shape, complete with angled lugs. A gold filled case from this era had the equivalent of 80 microns of gold thickness on each case section – over ten times what today’s Swiss gold electroplated watches have. The Longines-signed, yellow gold

finished winding crown is in excellent shape as well, operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I find that the back lid features a fine satin (brush) finish and is in spotless shape – stamped “10K GOLD FILLED” at one edge. Inside is a clean, fully serviced manual wind mechanism, signed Longines Watch Co., Swiss – Seventeen 17 Jewels [Grade] 10L, LXW with serial number 7,330,501 – dating the watch to ca 1947 per published records. In its glory years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even collaborating with Rolex (i.e., the Aegler movement duo-dial doctor’s watch) from its factories in Switzerland. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and

Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
Here is a truly fine, ORIGINAL example of a men’s Gruen Veri-Thin timepiece, a “Strap Model 522” that dates to circa 1948. This Precision series watch is 14kt Solid Rose Gold and comes complete with its original Speidel “Golden Knight” rose gold filled expansion bracelet, as shown below.
Triple-signed, it measures 34mm end to end and 22.5mm in width (24mm with original, unmarked rose gold crown). In inches this works out to be just under 1-3/8” by 7/8” wide, not including the crown. This would be considered a smaller men’s watch (albeit normal when made) that is also suitable for a woman’s wrist. It has been routinely serviced and its original 430 Caliber, Veri-Thin Precision mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original pink (rose gold), enamel finished dial is in great condition – evenly aged with a great patina and guaranteed to be untouched since it left the factory over 60 years ago. It features a 60 minute outer track border, raised gold hour markers and numerals, original gold metal Baton-style hands and a tonneau-form, sub-seconds dial with engine-turned center and ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed GRUEN VERI-THIN below the 12 marker and PRECISION above the seconds dial. It is further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent condition, removed in a couple photos to better show you the dial without glare. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Rose Gold (also called pink gold) and in excellent condition, an elegant Tonneau form with angled lugs. The original rose gold finished winding crown (unmarked) is in excellent shape as well, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the 14k solid rose gold back lid is in excellent condition and without any wear or engravings, just a few light surface scratches. It is stamped GRUEN 14 KARAT GOLD at the edge. Peeking inside I discover a 430 Caliber Seventeen Jewel movement, signed Gruen Watch Co., PRECISION, Seventeen 17 Jewels - VERI-THIN, PATENTED, Switzerland, GXC [Caliber] 430. This mechanism is near identical to the 440 caliber Curvex movement with many parts interchangeable. The inside of the case lid is signed Cased & Timed in U.S.A. by Gruen Watch Co., Star Watch Case Co., 14 Karat Gold - 430/457. You will note that the 430 caliber number is also stamped on the case lid while #457 is the dial series number.
This clean and original Gruen winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new black alligator (grain) calf leather Swiss strap with ROSE GOLD buckle attached. The winner will also receive the original Speidel “Golden Knight” rose gold finished expansion

I’ve always appreciated the high quality of vintage Bulova watches, an American company of great repute. It was founded by Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova and based in New York City, where the famous Bulova Observatory was located, high above a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue. Like Gruen, it also had a factory in (Bienne) Switzerland, established in 1912 and dedicated to the production of watch components and their assembly into jeweled movements. The firm is known for its aggressive advertising campaigns and for being the first to advertise on radio – with an announcer stating “B – U – L – O – V – A … 8:00p.m., Bulova Watch Time.”
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Bulova timepiece, a ladies evening (or “cocktail”) watch that dates to 1961 and is in pristine, original shape. This stylish, mid-century modern timepiece was made right here in the USA and is crafted of 14kt Solid White Gold. And yes, the 10 Diamonds are absolutely genuine, have a great sparkle and are of a good size.
Quadruple-signed for Bulova (case, dial, winding crown and mechanism), it measures 30.5mm end to end and 14.5mm in width (16mm with original signed winding crown). In inches this works out to be just 1-3/16” in length by 5/8 of an inch wide, including the crown. Total length with cord band is 7-1/2” and I can adjust this size (shorter or longer) for the high bidder. My talented and Bulova-trained watchmaker David has fully serviced its original and top-of-the-line 23 jewel manual wind USA made mechanism and it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in excellent condition and has not been retouched since it left the factory 50 years ago. raised hour markers and numerals, original silver steel Lance-style hands and is signed BULOVA below the 12 and 23 (for its high jewel count) above the 6.
The curved crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The two-piece case is 14kt Solid White Gold and in excellent to mint condition – absolutely perfect folks. The highlight of the design are the ten genuine diamonds that are set above the lugs – not small chips but of a good size and high clarity. The original white gold finished winding crown is in excellent shape, stamped “B” for Bulova and operates smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is also in excellent order with no wear or inscriptions. It is stamped 14K - BULOVA with case number as well. Peeking inside I find a clean Twenty Three Jewel, manual wind movement that is stamped Bulova U.S.A. – 23 Jewels, [Caliber] 5AD. It is also stamped with the date code for 1961 – “M1.”
This cleaned, oiled and regulated watch winds and sets smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. It is fitted with a new black cord strap with matching color fittings and clasp. The overall measurement of watch and band is 7-1/2 inches; if you need this shorter or longer just let me know. Overall a wonderfully preserved, all American timepiece when a woman actually did wear evening watches and most likely with a cocktail in her hand.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. 1906.
One of the first (if not ‘the’ first) watch companies to produce a wristwatch for men, its most famous early design was the Polyplan, followed by military timepieces and triple date watches.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the Movado firm, a men’s “scooped lug” model in 14kt Solid Yellow Gold that dates to ca 1942. Finding solid gold Movado watches from this era is not easy, especially Tank form (dress) models like this. In fact, this is first non military style Movado I have had in the past year.
This triple-signed Art Moderne (late Art Deco) model measures 31mm lug tip to lug tip and 22mm in width (24mm with winding crown). In inches this is just shy of 1-1/4” by 1” in width, crown included. While a men’s watch when first sold, its size would best be described today as a ¾ size men’s watch or “boy’s size” – ideal for the gentleman who prefers smaller watches or for a woman who wants a larger vintage timepiece. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 17 jewel manual wind Movado mechanism, fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David just last week and winding and setting smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The ivory color, matte enamel finished dial is in flawless condition – the original that has been professionally restored to its original status. It features a checkered 60 minute outer track border, solid gold applied numerals and gold “dot” hour indicators, original gold metal baton-style hands and a separate seconds dial with ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed MOVADO below the 12 and further signed SWITZERLAND at the base of the dial.
The solid glass crystal is the original for this watch and in great condition – a couple flea bites at the corners (visible with a loupe only) but no scratches. The concave “hooded” lug case is Movado-signed and 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold. It is in excellent condition. The matching yellow gold finished winding crown is excellent as well, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent shape – professionally engraved to a J.W. Walter and dated 1-31-43. Inside I find a high quality Seventeen Jewel mechanism that is signed MOVADO FACTORIES, SWISS - 17 SEVENTEEN JEWELS - MXI. Looking now at the inside back lid I find the easily recognized Movado trademark of a hand holding a pocket watch and it is further stamped 14K - 0.585 – MOVADO FACTORIES, SWITZERLAND with Swiss gold Squirrel hallmark and case reference numbers.
This Art Moderne period Movado has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 16mm black deBeer hand crafted lizard grain strap with gold finished buckle, ready to be worn and enjoyed. Thanks for dropping by and reading about this extra nice and very collectible vintage Swiss watch!

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. Prior to WWII, Gruen was better known in the USA than Rolex, which at that time was concentrating on the British and Commonwealth countries (hence lots of early Rolexes coming out of Australia and the UK). Hans Wilsdorf and Gruen were friends and neighbors in Switzerland (their factories were just yards away), and even agreed to market their watches as Rolex Gruen in Europe, but the Great Depression (and more urgent matters) prevented this.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from the Gruen firm, a near mint (i.e., almost New Old Stock) men’s “Precision” model from the early 1960s, complete with its original display case and outer box. This watch came from an estate where the original owner received it as a gift upon graduation (ca 1962) and never wore it. It is still unworn today but I have since added a new 17mm crocodile grain calf leather strap as that was missing!
This triple-signed timepiece measures 41mm end to end and 33.5mm in width (35mm with original, recessed, unmarked crown). This works out to be 1-5/8 inches long by 1-3/8 inches wide including the winding crown. It has been fully serviced and its original 17 jewel, manual wind 510 SS caliber mechanism winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate

time.
The 100% original silver, enamel finished dial is in mint condition – completely untouched since it left the factory. If you look closely it has a radiating brushed finish – just perfect. Features include raised silver hour markers and numerals, original silver steel Lance-style hands with luminous fill and a ‘sweep’ center seconds hand. Signed GRUEN PRECISION below the 12 and Ra SWISS Ra at the base of the dial.
The original hardened acrylic crystal is in mint condition. The chromium steel bezel (top section of case) is in pristine condition, complete with fancy “sharks tooth” lugs. The original winding crown, unmarked, is pristine as well, winding and setting as it should.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in flawless shape, retaining its original brush finish just as it left the factory. It is stamped Gruen Precision – Waterproof – Shock Resistant – Anti-Magnetic – Base Metal Bezel – Stainless Steel Back. Peeking inside I find a clean Seventeen Jewel movement that is signed Gruen Watch Co., Seventeen 17 Jewels – Swiss, Caliber N510 SS- GXC. The inside case back is signed STAINLESS STEEL BACK – GRUEN WATCH CO., 510R SS – MADE IN FRANCE. Note how the mechanism caliber number is also stamped on the inside case back.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a new 17mm black crocodile (grain) calf leather Swiss band with matching steel buckle. This timepiece also comes with its outer Gruen-signed dark burgundy box and original hinged dark red display case, marked “GRUEN” on the outside and GRUEN – THE PRECISION WATCH on the inside. My longtime favorite U.S. watch firm is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois (the factory had a National Street address). It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.
Elgin would offer its first watch for sale in 1867, marking the beginning of fierce competition with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.
Well if this isn’t a watch that makes you say “wow” I don’t know what is. I am very pleased to offer for sale the following men’s timepiece, a PANORAMA model that dates to ca 1957. This watch is in truly excellent original condition – the first time I’ve ever had this rare sterling silver dial model before. It is also a top-of-the-line Lord Elgin timepiece, the best the company offered and featuring a high-grade 23 jewel USA made mechanism that is adjusted to 6 positions.
Quadruple-signed for Elgin, this 14kt Yellow Gold filled timepiece measures 36mm lug tip to lug tip and 30.5mm in width (32.8mm with original Elgin signed crown). This works out to be just over 1-3/8 inches in length by just over 1-3/16 inches in width, not including the winding crown. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 724 grade mechanism to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original sterling silver “guilloche” (engine-turned engraved) dial is in mint condition – untouched since it left the factory over 50 years ago. I don’t think a watch can get any more Space Age or “Sputnik” in feel than this one – reflective of what was going on in the world back in 1957. It features applied solid gold faceted hour markers, a crosshair design through the entire dial with engine-turned center, original gold metal Dauphine-style hands and a center ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed LORD ELGIN below the 12 with the dp logo below this - representing “durapower”, a patented unbreakable mainspring technology invented by the firm. It is further signed SHOCKMASTER above the seconds dial.
The original, hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent condition with no flaws. The case is 14 Karat Yellow Gold Filled and in excellent shape

with absolutely no wear. The original gold finished winding crown is signed “Elgin” and in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is also 14 Karat Gold Filled and in excellent condition – absolutely no wear or engravings past or present. Inside I discover a clean Twenty One Jewel, fully adjusted 13/0 size movement signed Elgin [Grade] 724 USA – 23 Jewels, 6 Adj. The inside of the back case lid is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co., 14k Gold Filled Wadsworth [Model] 7685.
This watch has been disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets very smoothly while keeping accurate time. This 14kt White Gold filled model is the non-engraved example of the Cushion model and it features the less often seen “Exploding” number dial that I have always loved (shown also in my original background advertisement).
Triple-signed for Hamilton, it measures 33mm lug tip to lug tip and 29mm in width (30.5mm with recessed crown). In inches this work out to be just over 1-1/4” long by just over 1-1/8” wide, not including the winding crown…a tad bigger than the original Cushion form models that did not have a projecting center case section. It has been fully serviced and restored by Hamilton expert Bryan Girouard, who also offers wonderful watches for sale at artdecowristwatchescom. As such, its original 987 grade, seventeen jewel mechanism winds ands sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The silver butler finish dial is in flawless condition, having been professionally restored to its original status. It features a crisp checkered 60 minute outer track border, luminous applied Exploding numbers, original blued steel Skeleton hands with luminous fill and a circular seconds dial with sweep blued steel seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON in black enameled letters below the 12.
The new old stockglass crystal is in perfect condition, just added by me and removed in some photos to avoid glare. The three-piece, 14 Karat White Gold Filled case is in excellent PLUS condition with absolutely no wear or engravings, truly pristine. The correct white gold finish winding crown (possibly original) is in excellent shape shape, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is also 14kt white gold filled and in excellent PLUS condition with no wear or engravings. Peeking inside I find a 6/0 size Seventeen Jewel manual wind movement signed Hamilton Watch Co., 4,002,180 – [Grade] 987, 17 Jewels. The inside of the case lid is stamped H for Hamilton and 6/0 – Wadsworth quality 14 Karat Gold Filled – 0555756. The last four digits of the case back reference number (5756) match the number on the body of the watch, ensuring an original timepiece.
This fully serviced timepiece winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted with a 16mm black lizard (grain) calf leather strap with matching color buckle for a handsome combination. Folks, I don’t think you could find a nicer Cushion model Hamilton than this – truly excellent in all respects.

Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
