this has been! Many thanks to all our advertisers for making this insert possible, and of course to all our

editorial contributors including Tourism Australia for their piece, No Leave No Life, which focuses on the importance of taking holidays.

What this insert has really brought to light for me is the fact that many of us are living with a “one day” attitude. So many save their leave, but don’t actually have plans set in place for when they’ll use it.

So why not? Is it the expense of the actual trip, or is it work-related? You feel you have too much on your plate or perhaps you worry that no one else can hold the fort while you’re away?

Whatever the reason, you’re not alone. The main story in this insert covers the

staggering numbers when it comes to leave owed to workers, and more importantly, why workers are choosing not to take it! What many may not realise when it comes to this issue though, is that not taking time away from work can actually be detrimental to your health!

nation of laid-back individuals with a good balance between work

and leisure however the statistics paint a different picture.

Despite the laidback image, Australians have amassed around 129 million days* of untaken annual leave entitlements.

Back in 2005, Tourism Australia commissioned a research study to look at annual accrued leave in Australia and the findings from this research suggested that this was a huge issue within organisations. Continued tracking since then has continued to show that annual accrued

leave accrual remains a major issue for employers and one which needs to be addressed.

Through its No Leave No Life program, Tourism Australia has been raising awareness of the issue and encouraging Australians to take a break in their own country and reap the benefits of time away from work.

Not taking a holiday has impacts on the wellbeing of employees as productivity, health and stress levels are all negatively impacted which is why Tourism Australia’s marketing campaigns are geared around encouraging Australians to take holidays

and take them in Australia.There are a number of reasons why

people aren’t taking holidays each year, from economic uncertainty to apprehensions about the workload they’ll face upon return to work if their position is not backfilled while they are away.

Organisations that endorse a positive work/life balance and leave culture are better positioned to have a higher staff retention rate and be recognised as an employer of choice.
