GOD LOVES WITHOUT TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE MERITS
Today all three readings converge on the same theme: “God’s mercy and forgiving love”. In the first
reading God offers mercy and kindness to the Jews after they rebelled against him. His forgiveness is
gratuitous, and he does not put any condition, he does not wait to see if they are going to deserve his
forgiveness or not. The Gospel is the familiar parable of the prodigal son; it with the parable of the lost
sheep and the lost coin. What could the little sheep have done to merit the attention of the shepherd?
Nothing. It had just got lost, that’s all.
The example of Paul proposed by the second reading completes today’s catechesis. Paul tells of his
gratefulness to Jesus Christ. He was erring without knowing that he was going the wrong way (1Tim
1:13); the people of Israel had reverted to pagan rites because of ignorance; the little sheep had gone
astray by mistake …. That was why the Lord was so good and understanding to those who crucified him:
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” (Lk. 23:34)
Whenever we gather in prayer as a Christian community we are called to celebrate and rejoice, just as the
merciful father ordered in today's Gospel. As we celebrate and rejoice in the Lord Jesus, may we listen to
God's word, grow in holiness as he strengthens us and seek the forgiveness that only our heavenly Father
can offer.
Blessings!
gratitud a Jesucristo.
Bendiciones!
