Lent Starts February 24th Sorokousty Services during Lent
Please get your requests in for Sorokousty services for deceased family members. These services will be held
Thursdays at 9:30 am: Feb 27, March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 2 If you wish your departed loved ones remembered on these special days please update your family list on the Sorokousty form located in the narthex and return it in the special offering envelopes marked “Sorokousty” or the convenience envelope located in the pew pocket and place it in the Sunday collection basket. Contact the parish office for list of family names that were submitted last year. Suggested donation is $20.00. Please make cheques payable to Fr John Mostivsky.

Attention parents of boys and girls 8 years and over
Please consider allowing your boys to take part in becoming an altar boy and your girls in serving as a member of the Children of Mary. Tell your children that being an altar boy and serving as Children of Mary is regarded as one of the highest form of ministry in the Church. Those who take part in this minis-try receive many graces that may not be noticeable to them at present but God never forgets those who serve Him. We are appealing to all parents to encourage their children to take part in this special ministry. Children should not be denied of this opportunity. Not only are they receiving special blessings for taking part in this ministry, but also they are expanding their spiritual knowledge that will serve them well as they mature to adulthood.

Why does the priest cense us?
During the services, the priest censes many things in church. He also censes the people. Why does he cense the people? As clouds of smoke from the burning incense rise up, we are reminded that we were created in the “image and likeness of God.” It is this image in us that the priest censes. Just as he censes the icons of the saints, he censes each of us. We are called to be saints. When we turn to God and tell Him we are sorry for our sins, He visits us and blesses us. He en-courages us to grow and become more like Himself who is both holy and good. When the priest censes us, he reminds us to keep the divine image in us pure and God-like.

On this 75 th year of the Holocaust, we ask our parishioners to take some time during their busy schedule to remember and offer prayers for the Jewish people and all those who perished during this horrific and unimaginable part of our history. We must recognize that none of us is immune from falling victim to similar atrocities in time of unrest in the world. There should be no room for promoting anti-Semitism, anti-racial or any form of hatred towards our fellow human beings who were all created in the image of God. It is our duty as Christians to do our part in quelling all forms of discrimination against one another.

Fr Luis Melo Appointment
Fr Luis served at Holy Family Parish while he was in Winnipeg. On behalf of our Parish we congratulate him in on his special appointment.
Cardinal Collins has appointed Fr Luis Director of the Office for Promoting Christian Unity and Religious Relations with Judaism effective July 1st, 2020. In preparation for this new assignment, he has been granted a sabbatical leave effective January 9, 2020. Attached is a memo that was circulated a few weeks ago. Fr Luis served as Academic Dean at St. Augustine’s Seminary for over six years (two three-year terms, apparently the longest mandate of anyone since 2002) and have been asked to return to the kind of ministry he exercised in western Canada and the Vatican. He looks forward in discovering the ecumenical scene in the Greater Toronto area beyond the Toronto School of Theology. Although moving on from administration at the Seminary, Fr Luis expects to remain on Faculty as a sessional lecturer from time-to-time.
