Hence, in the account of the Pentecostal descent of the Holy Spirit, noce that the Spirit filled the enre house”, and then the apostles were all filled with the Holy Spirit”, and then they fill the streets of Jerusalem where, speaking in the languages of the known world, they signify that the Spirit fills the inhabited world with Gods blessings. As the psalmist says, the earth is full of Gods riches”. The message of Pentecost, therefore, which was a great Jewish harvest fesval, is that God fills the world with His riches, His manifold blessings and gis, indeed, with His holy presence, and God desires that you and I should reap that harvest, and receive His blessings, and use His gis. Saint Paul describes well the world that we live in, a world that is wounded and torn apart by sin, a world over which the Devil is prince. So we are all somehow vicms of sin. Each of us has been preyed upon by the Devil who, from the start, had lied to our first parents and has seduced us and influenced us, inducing us to choose sin. Oen, against our beer judgment, we think that by lying, fighng, quarrelling, and indulging the desires of the flesh and by grasping for more control, power, and money we can be happier. But we think this because we have been lied to by the world, by the lusts of the flesh, and by the Devil. At some level, we believed those lies because nobody acts in order to become more unhappy – we desired, rather, what we thought to be good, what we believed would lead to happiness and contentment. But, as Saint Paul says, these lies are opposed to the Holy Spirit.” Knowing our predicament, our merciful Savior, therefore, promises to send the Spirit of truth”. He is our Advocate”, that is to say, He defends us from the assaults and lies of the Devil, and He is our Helper, for He comes to lead us to the complete truth”. He comes like fire to burn away falsehood and lies. If we are led by the Spirit, then, we shall have love, joy, peace, paence, kindness, goodness, trusulness, gentleness, and self-control”. Who does not long for such gis? Who does not seek to live in such a world? But if we desire these gis of God, then we have to receive the Holy Spirit, and seek daily to be directed by the Spiritas Saint Paul says. We must daily surrender to the Holy Spirit, reject whatever is contrary to Gods holiness, and so be filled with the Holy Spirit. Let us breathe in the Breath of God and be inspired by Him. In the words of the French Catholic Philosopher León Bloy, when all is said and done, the only great tragedy in life, is not to be- come a saint”. The Holy Spirit comes, therefore, to lead us into this great truth: that God has created you and me as potenal saints; He has made us for loving friendship with Himself. To aain this great gi of blessed union in heaven with Him, He has given us the greatest Gi of Himself, He gives us His Holy Spirit. So, everyday let us receive the Gi of the Holy Spirit; let us listen in silence to His inspiraons, and obey His Word. May 31, 2020 Solemnity of Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday: “The only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint” Air gets everywhere – it fills our lungs, our rooms, our homes, and the whole world. What a fi#ng image it is, therefore, for the Holy Spirit, the “Breath of God” who fills all crea!on and gives to it the gi$s and blessings of the living and true God. For the Spirit of God is the air that the Risen Lord breathes over us His disciples, and over the Church, and over the whole world that crea!on might be given new life: “Receive the Holy Spirit”. Hence, in the account of the Pentecostal descent of the Holy Spirit, no!ce that the Spirit “filled the en"re house”, and then the apostles were “all filled with the Holy Spirit”, and then they fill the streets of Jerusalem where, speaking in the languages of the known world, they signify that the Spirit fills the inhabited world with God’s blessings. As the psalmist says, “the earth is full of God’s riches”. The message of Pentecost, therefore, which was a great Jewish harvest fes!val, is that God fills the world with His riches, His manifold blessings and gi$s, indeed, with His holy presence, and God desires that you and I should reap that harvest, and receive His blessings, and use His gi$s. Saint Paul describes well the world that we live in, a world that is wounded and torn apart by sin, a world over which the Devil is prince. So we are all somehow vic!ms of sin. Each of us has been preyed upon by the Devil who, from the start, had lied to our first parents and has seduced us and influenced us, inducing us to choose sin. O$en, against our be&er judgment, we think that by lying, figh!ng, quarrelling, and indulging the desires of the flesh and by grasping for more control, power, and money we can be happier. But we think this because we have been lied to by the world, by the lusts of the flesh, and by the Devil. At some level, we believed those lies because nobody acts in order to become more unhappy – we desired, rather, what we thought to be good, what we believed would lead to happiness and contentment. But, as Saint Paul says, these lies are “opposed to the Holy Spirit.” Knowing our predicament, our merciful Savior, therefore, promises to send the “Spirit of truth”. He is our “Advocate”, that is to say, He defends us from the assaults and lies of the Devil, and He is our Helper, for He comes to lead us “to the complete truth”. He comes like fire to burn away falsehood and lies. If we are led by the Spirit, then, we shall have “love, joy, peace, pa"ence, kindness, goodness, trus#ulness, gentleness, and self-control”. Who does not long for such gi$s? Who does not seek to live in such a world? But if we desire these gi$s of God, then we have to receive the Holy Spirit, and seek daily to “be directed by the Spirit” as Saint Paul says. We must daily surrender to the Holy Spirit, reject whatever is contrary to God’s holiness, and so be filled with the Holy Spirit. Let us breathe in the Breath of God and be inspired by Him. Spiritual Communion What happens when we cannot receive Jesus sacramentally? The tradi!on tells us to make a “spiritual communion,” joining our whole selves—prayers, works, joys, and sufferings—to his sacrificial presence in the Eucharist—even when that sacrament is not before us to receive.

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire You with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already in my heart

and unite myself to You completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from You.

Amen.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Why are Catholics required to fast before Communion? Answer: How we prepare for an important event helps us with the intentionality of our actions and raises our awareness. We prepare our house for guests. We wash our car before an important trip. We create a nursery for a newborn child. All of these actions heighten our senses for what is about to come. The fast required by canon law before holy Communion has its roots in Jewish spiritual practices. We fast for cleansing and to demonstrate our reliance on God. Catholics used to fast for much longer periods of time, but it was Pope Paul VI in 1964 who set the time at one hour in an attempt to encourage people to receive the Holy Eucharist more frequently. That one hour observance allows us to pause and reflect on what we will participate in in the very near future. We deny our bodies so that we can focus more clearly on the Body of Christ that we will consume. ©LPi ASCENSION MEDITATION We are meant to be in Christ. This glorious feast of the Ascension shows us, with clear vision, who Jesus really is! Understanding ourselves in Christ really changes things up and reorients us to our greater purpose, mission, and meaning. We are part of the cosmic wonder of creation and part of a bigger plan and mystery, destined to be much more than what we now know ourselves to be. Could Jesus’ friends know who he would become? If we can find the Christ present within and see the Christ bursting forth in all creation and beyond, then we can come to know our truth and understand where our home and life is meant to be. Advancing upon the blessing of each new day with the certain knowledge that you are an unconditionally loved child of God gives you the axis and the safe harbor to cope with whatever comes your way. The gift of joy will be yours, and you can discover your true meaning and purpose. Look within, look without, look above, and look below. You are not alone. Trust that God will lead you where you need to be and transform you into who you really are. ©LPi
