Do We Prefer Darkness to Light? There is an old story about a desert dweller

that woke up in the middle of the night

feeling very hungry. And so he lit a candle

and began ea"ng dates. He took a bite from

one and saw a worm in it; so he threw it out

of the tent. He bit into the second date,

found another worm, and so he threw that one away as well.

Then thinking to himself that if this con"nued in this way he

wouldn't have any dates le#. So he blew out the candle and

quickly ate the rest of the dates.

This story is pre+y gross, right? But isn't this exactly

what people do when they blow out the light of Christ in their

lives and choose to live in darkness? Such persons prefer to

live in darkness so they don’t have to see the "worms" in their

lives. They do not want to see the wrong or sinful things they

are doing. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever

follows Me will have the light of life and will not walk in

darkness"

Let’s be honest and accept the fact that we too may

be doing things that we would rather not see, those nasty li+le

"worms" that we would have to throw out of our lives, if we

saw them for what they really are. Some of us may have

preferred to live in the darkness for many years, and yet the

Good News is that the light of Christ is available at any "me to

anyone who is willing to allow that light of goodness and truth

to shine in their lives.

A light that allows us to see clearly our tempta"ons,

weaknesses, faults and failings; those "mes we have treated

people poorly, even those we love; our selfish a'tudes; our

refusal to forgive or give a helping hand to someone. The

Light, Jesus, has come into the world not to bring us

condemna"on, but to bring us salva"on, not to rub our noses

in the wrong we do, but to help us see clearly so we can get rid

of them to be more like Christ.

This light of Christ is free, it allows us to change, it

brings hope, and it leads to forgiveness. The Light of Jesus

brings encouragement and strength in "mes of trouble and

sickness. Above all, it is a Light which is meant to guide us

along life’s journey to eventually bring us into eternal life.

Wherever there is darkness in our heart, in our family, in our

friendships, in our community, the light of Jesus comes to

shine on all these areas of our lives to bring us inner peace,

harmony, holiness and joy. Let us allow the light of Christ this

Lent to dispel the darkness of our lives.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

Due to the recent events in Parkland, Florida, there has

been a lot of discussion among parents, students, and school

personnel as to “what is our plan?” To help address some of the

concerns and discuss op"ons, we will be hos"ng a parent and

parish discussion about school safety on Mon., March 19th in the

church dining hall beginning at 6 pm. Having this discussion is very

important as the school and diocese con"nue to move forward

with updated plans. We need your opinions and feedback.

Developing plans together is vital for our success. As a parent, you

will want to a+end this discussion. I invite and ask all parents to

come and hear what we are planning and help us develop a plan

that will protect our children.

I will be out of the office beginning on March 9th and

returning March 19th. I will be having shoulder surgery. If you

need to get a hold of me you can contact me at 715-862-2229.
