MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 2019-C My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Happy Labor Day Weekend!!! It was in 1858, that at the age of fourteen, Bernadette Soubirous was collecting fire wood

near the grotto at Massabielle, not far from her home in Lourdes. It was here that she witnessed the first apparition of a beautiful lady. This lady, who would latter reveal herself as “The Immaculate Conception,” asked Bernadette to come and visit the grotto each day for fifteen days. At that time, Bernadette did not know who the lady was, yet faithfully, she went back each day to meet her. The lady, whom we now know to be the Mother of God, gave Bernadette instructions to pass on to the local clergy about building a church over a healing spring that had been uncovered at the grotto. In spite of great incredulity and attempts to discredit her, Bernadette persisted in relaying the messages. Even though she faced great opposition and accusations of madness, Bernadette remained faithful to all she had seen and heard. The shrine at Lourdes is now visited by millions of pilgrims every year. Bernadette’s family was poor. Following a failed business venture, the family found themselves living in a one room dwelling that had previously been a prison called the dungeon. Bernadette was a sickly child, suffering from digestive and respiratory problems. She was uneducated. To all intents and purposes, she had nothing going for her. However, she had been instilled with faith. Her incorrupt body now lies in a beautiful glass casket in Nevers, France where people can wonder about what her eyes saw and dwell on the example she gave. She is now receiving her reward in heaven, constantly in the presence of God and interceding for us. St. Bernadette is a truly inspiring model of faith and humility. The humble one has been exalted. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable in order to get through to the Pharisees about the need for true humility. He notices that their tendency is to take the places of honor and sees this as part of their pride or belief that they are more important than others. The name “Pharisee” means “separated one,” and so they do see themselves as the elite group. Jesus gives us a concrete parable about pride in today’s Gospel but He surely wants us to go deeper, exploring the nuances of this in our lives. For in rooting out our pride from our hearts and growing in humility, we will be allowing God to be exalted in us and through us. Hope you are all enjoying the last few days of summer. It is a time of new adventurous beginnings, especially for children beginning school for the first time, others getting ready to begin a new year of school. Others are going off to colleges or universities as well as many beginning new jobs or careers. Important learning experiences for all as we challenge ourselves and others in life. I, too, am settling in on my sabbatical with studies, as well as free time, and enjoying the beauty of Italy, especially in the Eternal City. Please pray for me and know that you are remembered in my prayers and at Mass here in Rome. Don’t forget to save the dates for our Annual Festival in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata, Thursday, September 19, through Sunday, September 22. Rides, games, Super 50/50 cash raffle, entertainment and great food! Mass and Procession in honor of our Lady on Sunday, September 22, beginning with 12:00 Noon Mass. Peace and Prayers from Roma! Fr. Joe

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you." (Luke 14:13-14) We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner,

a chance to play golf or our name in print. Yet, as Christian stewards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven. For Sunday, August 25, 2019 The actual collection was $8,520.00, $1,877.00 of which came from ParishGiving. The 2nd Collection for Shared School Expenses was $2,081.00, Mass Attendance was 1,130. God Bless You for your generosity!

For Sunday, August 26, 2018 The actual collection was $8,704.00;

$1,708.00 of which came from ParishGiving. The 2nd Collection for Church Needs was $2,164.00.

Mass Attendance was 1,124

A letter was received from Carol Bennett, Mission Coordinator for the 2019 Mission Cooperative, thanking Holy Family for our generous contribution of $1,787.40, as a result of Brother Kyle Mena of the De La Salle Christian Brothers visit in July.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a very special intention. On the 3rd

Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will follow the 7:00 Saturday evening Italian Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket (see form). Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.

SANTA MARIA MEDAL RECIPIENT REVEREND FATHER CARMINE RIZZI DEFENDER OF THE BOND, METROPOLITAN TRIBUNAL FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK

The Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council 14712 is pleased and honored to present the Santa Maria Medal for Catholic Service and Leadership to the Reverend Father Carmine Rizzi. Fr. Carmine is a son of Holy Family Church; he was raised and educated in Nutley and in 2013 he became the first member of the Holy Family Knights of Columbus to be ordained a priest. Father Carmine recently completed an advanced degree in Canon Law at the Catholic University of America and now serves as Defender of the Bond at the Metropolitan Tribunal for the Archdiocese of Newark. The Holy Family Council gratefully recognizes Father Carmine Rizzi for his priestly service, lifelong dedication to Holy Family Church, and fraternal commitment to the Knights of Columbus. The Santa Maria Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council 14712. In addition to invoking and venerating the Blessed Virgin Mary, our universal patron and Queen of the Knights, the Medal’s title is also a reference to the ship, the Santa Maria, which most historical accounts hold was the lead vessel of Christopher Columbus on his voyage to the New World. Accordingly, the Holy Family Council bestows the Santa Maria Medal once annually in recognition of distinguished Catholic service and leadership.
