HOLY FAMILY It is our family that makes and keeps us human. We were welded into it before we were born; it is our anchor in hu-man history. Scholars believe that the gospel accounts (in Matthew and Luke) of Jesus' childhood were not in the original form of the gospels but were added on at an early stage because they were needed to keep the story of Jesus anchored in this life.
In the West we tend to think of the family as the 'nuclear family': father, mother and child. Then we project this on-to the family of Jesus. But an Eastern family, even to this day, comprises a hundred people or more (this is how Je-sus managed to get lost in the Temple). In today’s first reading, Abram complained to God of having no children. Then “God brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them…. So shall your descendants be.’" Nothing about a nuclear family.
Jesus too was part of an extended family. But that physical family was nothing compared to the spiritual family of disciples through the ages and through the whole world. We all have our part in extending it. Every time we extend a hand to a neighbor or a stranger we are extending that great family. With legitimate hindsight we can see his spiritual family continuing to extend till it includes the whole world. —Donagh O’Shea

REFLECTION How often in our lives do the seemingly in-
significant events and encounters turn out to be mo-ments of profound confirmation to God’s work in our lives.
This Feast of the Holy Family presents us with two important reminders that can help us in our faith. The first is that Jesus, Mary and Joseph were the Holy Family. And even as the Holy Family they faced the knowledge that things would not be perfect. The second point is that each family is called to be a Holy Family. We grow in holiness by growing in un-conditional love for one another, praying for one an-other, and praying for each other. This Feast calls us to ask the Holy Family to intercede for us in our vari-ous needs as God’s families. As Servant of God taught us, Fr. Patrick Peyton taught us, “The family that prays together, stays together.” —Father Killian

SOMETHING ORDINARY We look for something spectacular, some-thing apart from the ordinary, with an unmistakable divine stamp….we loo in vain. I wonder, if in looking for God in our life, , we don’t make the same mistake-expecting the will of God to be something apart from the ordinary, something clearly stamped with the divine seal. We look in vain if we are looking only for the extraordi-nary. God’s work is seldom something apart from the work of our daily lives. God most often works through the ordi-nary...always has….always will.—The little blue book
