    ORDINARY TIME…

    WHAT IS SO ‘ORDINARY’ ABOUT IT?

    This past Monday, January 11, 2021, we began

    another period of time in our Church year entitled

    Ordinary Time. So, what is it? What is so ordinary

    about it? It simply is a period of time in our church

    calendar where we can spend out days worshipping

    outside the great liturgical seasons of Christmas and

    Easter along with their preparation times, Advent and

    Lent. It is during this time in the calendar year when

    we remember, in prayer, many Saints, for example.

    This period of time also allows the church to celebrate

    Masses in honor of saints or The Blessed Virgin. There

    are any number of Mass intentions of the Holy Father.

    We can remember to pray for persecuted Christians.

    The liturgical color for this time of the year is green.

    There are two periods of this special time within the

    calendar year… the space of time from the end of the

    Christmas season up to Ash Wednesday.

    The second period falls between the end of the Easter

    season until the beginning of the season of Advent.

    Prayer time is

    6¿QUE PUEDO HACER PARA CRECER ESPIRITUAL-

    MENTE (segunda parte)?

    Participar de los estudios bíblicos: Diferente al servicio

    tradicional de los domingos, los estudios bíblicos que se

    ofrecen durante la semana permiten que levantes la mano

    si tienes alguna pregunta o si no entiendes algo. En gene-

    ral, estos servicios son más pequeños y más informales y

    a veces se ofrecen para grupos con intereses similares.

    Los estudios bíblicos de tu iglesia son de los mejores re-

    cursos que tienes disponible para entender la Biblia y los

    debes de aprovechar.

    Compartir las buenas nuevas: La Gran Comisión en

    Mateo 28 nos manda a compartir el evangelio con los de-

    más. Aunque no acepten tu invitación, trata de invitar a

    alguien nuevo a tu iglesia cada semana para que escu-

    chen el mensaje de salvación. Si no van, trata de compartir

    con ellos tu testimonio. No solo estarás cumpliendo con un

    mandamiento, pero experimentaras el gozo de compartir la

    buenas nuevas con las personas que están a tu alrededor.

    Estudio profundo de los evangelios: Jesucristo es la

    razón por la cual somos salvos. Para conocer más de Je-

    sús y el sacrificio que hiso por ti, lee los evangelios. Ellos

    están dedicados a su vida y ministerio, y son la base para

    el resto del nuevo testamento. Mientras estés leyendo a

    Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan, ten disponible un diccionario

    bíblico o varios estudios y comentarios sobre estos libros.

    Dedícale unos cuantos meses y en un cuaderno anota lo

    que vas aprendiendo.

    Mantener un diario: Cada quien tiene costumbres, bue-

    nas y malas, de la cual no se da cuenta. Si mantienes un

    diario de los acontecimientos de tu día, de vez en cuando

    podrás revisarlo y aprender ciertas cosas de ti mismo. Qui-

    zás notaras que pierdes mucho la paciencia, que no das

    gracias por las bendiciones en tu vida como debes, o que

    tienes buenas habilidades en áreas específicas. Puedes

    usar lo que aprendes para que en oración Dios te ayude a

    superar lo negativo, y te ilumine para usar lo positivo para

    su gloria.

    Ser fiel con los diezmos y las ofrendas: El crecimiento

    espiritual que resulta del dar los diezmos y las ofrendas

    viene, no porque estás dando dinero ya que las bendicio-

    nes no se compran, sino porque lo estás haciendo en ac-

    ción de gracias y adoración a Dios. Toda está en la actitud

    del diezmador. La Biblia dice en 2 Corintios 9:7 que Dios

    ama al dador alegre. Tus diezmos y ofrendas apoyan a los

    servicios y programas de tu iglesia. Cuando das, le das a

    Dios.

    SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

    READING I 1 SM 3:3B-10, 19

    Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where

    the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who

    answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here

    I am. You called me.” “I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go

    back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the

    LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I

    am, “ he said. “You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did

    not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.”

    At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD,

    because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as

    yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time.

    Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You

    called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was

    calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep,

    and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your

    servant is listening.” When Samuel went to sleep in his

    place, the LORD came and revealed his presence,

    calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel

    answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

    Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not

    permitting any word of his to be without effect.

    Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but

    for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the

    Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not

    know that your bodies are members of Christ? But

    whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with

    him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits

    is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against

    his own body. Do you not know that your body is a tem-

    ple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from

    God, and that you are not your own? For you have been

    purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

    GOSPEL JN 1:35-42

    John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he

    watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”

    The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.

    Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,

    “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” —

    which translated means Teacher —, “where are you stay-

    ing?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they

    went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed

    with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. An-

    drew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who

    heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own

    brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”

    — which is translated Christ —.Then he brought him to

    Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the

    son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is

    translated Peter.

    in July. One statement will be from January 1 – June 30 from your former OPV parish and the other from July 1 –

    December 31 from Holy Family Parish. If recently moved or joined Holy Family, not from one of our former five

    Father Michael Gaitley, author of the popular 33 Days to Morning Glory has finished his third

    book, 33 DAYS TO GREATER GLORY: A TOTAL CONSECRATION TO THE FATHER

    THROUGH JESUS BASED ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. Our Parish has arranged a

    discounted bulk rate of this book for us to hold another at-home retreat during Lent,

    beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 17 and ending on Palm Sunday, March 28. Each

    day involves a reflection reading from the book and a consecration on the concluding day that we will have at our weekend

    Masses on Palm Sunday. The book also includes a 9 day consecration to St. Joseph. In addition, Father Nathaniel Polinski,

    OSB, one of the popular Benedictine priests that is a weekend guest for Masses in Plum recently authored an academic book,

    That the Scriptures Might Be Fulfilled through Perfect Worship. Father Nathaniel will share a presentation from his scholarly

    work on Palm Sunday afternoon. The title of his presentation will be “Diving More Deeply into the Passion of our Lord Jesus

    Christ according to John.” Parishioners, especially those who have completed the 33 Days to Greater Glory retreat, are invited

    to attend in person at St. John the Baptist Church or via livestream. Sign up now to reserve your copy of 33 Days to Greater

    FR. GEORGE UPDATE

    Last Sunday, Father Dalton tested positive for

    COVID. Since he had been experiencing symptoms

    earlier in the week, he remained quarantined.

    Father Dalton has had only mild symptoms and is staying

    at the rectory at St. Irenaeus Church which is a separate

    house. He lives in a separate rectory from the other clergy

    and has not been present in any of our public buildings

    for over two weeks. All of our buildings have been

    electrostatically sanitized again last week.

    When Father Dalton shared that he had symptoms and

    was being tested, we issued a Flocknote to everyone who

    has signed up for COVID updates. We sent another

    Flocknote when he got the news that he tested positive.

    HOLY FAMILY SOS CHRISTMAS BRUNCH

    Since 2014 the SOS (Serving Our Seniors) Ministry has conducted a Christmas brunch to provide a meal

    for those struggling financially, the elderly, the homeless, and anyone who wanted to come and not eat alone on

    Christmas Day. This outreach took on a new look in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. The Holy

    Family Parish Christmas Brunch Team felt it was important to carry on with the spirit of Christmas and decided that

    delivering small gifts of pastries, fruit, crackers, cookies, candy bars, and a small ornament of the Holy Family,

    while observing all CDC guidelines, was the best way to share the joy of Christmas in 2020 to the homebound and

    needy.

    The Christmas Brunch Team reached out to senior high rises, senior centers, service associations and food

    banks in Delmont, Monroeville, Murrysville, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Plum, and Verona, as well as parishioners of

    Holy Family Parish in Oakmont, Plum and Verona to determine those who were in need of some Christmas joy.

    With God’s guidance and grace, a number of volunteers from Holy Family Parish in Oakmont, Plum and

    Verona were able to deliver gifts of joy to two hundred fifty-eight (258) homebound individuals this past

    Christmas in the following areas: Apollo, Bradenville, Derry, Derry Township, Latrobe, Loyalhanna, Monroeville,

    Murrysville, New Kensington, Oakmont, Penn Hills, Pittsburgh, Plum, Springdale, Verona, and Youngstown,

    PA. The gifts were packaged on December 23

    , by twenty-

    three teams of drivers, including four teams from our namesake parish, Holy Family Parish in Latrobe. One of the

    recipients later remarked, “The gift of joy was a ray of sunshine in a very dreary year.”

    Another recipient exclaimed about receiving the

    gift in spite of the snow, "I am in appreciation of

    the people who delivered the gift bags. They

    needed a dog sled to get through this morning!

    God bless them all!" The volunteers received

    gifts of another sort, “People were so grateful and

    Happy to see us; it truly warmed our hearts.”

    purchased as soon as possible. You can purchased these at St. John’s rectory. If you want to have them sent to a rectory

    We will continue to carry a supply of Community Market, Giant Eagle, Shop-N-Save, WalMart, Sheetz, Speedway and

    Sunoco in the rectories at St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph during their respective business hours.

    These specific cards will also be sold before and after select Masses; St. Irenaeus on Saturdays, St. Joseph on Sundays,

    The Holy Family 31 Club

    Supporting Future Vocations from Holy Family Parish

    Would you be willing to dedicate prayer time one day of each month for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life in

    Holy Family Parish? If so, The 31 Club wants you!

    What: The 31 Club is a way for parishioners prayerfully to help in the vocations effort at the parish level.

    When: No meetings, just sign up for one day a month.

    Who: Open to all parishioners including those that are homebound and wish to offer their sufferings.

    How it works:

    -Sign a pledge form (below) to pray one day of the month (that you have chosen).

    -Choose a type of prayer.

    -Examples are: Mass, Rosary, Holy Hour before Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet or some form of fasting,

    abstaining, sacrifice, offering of suffering.

    Goal: The 31 Club is to have dedicated prayer all possible 31 days of each month.

    Prayer is talking to God. Through prayer we deepen our friendship with Jesus. Through prayer we deepen our understanding of

    God’s plan for our life. Through prayer we deepen our appreciation for how much God loves us. Through prayer we strengthen

    our spiritual lives so that we, through the grace of God, change ourselves. In seeking God’s call for our lives, prayer helps us to

    choose and live our vocation.

    Simple prayer: Lord, help me to live my vocation and pray for those called to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life.

    The response to the announcement of the 31 Club seeking prayer warriors for supporting future vocations

    from Holy Family Parish has been encouraging. To guarantee daily prayer every day of each month there

    are prayers warriors still needed for the following days:

    12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31.

    If you can commit to one of these days each month for a year, please fill out the “Pledge Slip” and return it
