Our Communion hymn this week is We Three Kings, written by John Hopkins Jr. and the traditional carol or hymn for today’s feast of the Epiphany. John Hopkins Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, the son of an Episcopal bishop. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1839 and earned a Master’s degree in 1845. In 1850 he graduated from the General Theological Seminary and became the seminary’s first music teacher from 1855 to 1857.

The Episcopal Church celebrated Epiphany in both America and the United Kingdom and during the 1800s this special day was traditionally the day the Christmas tree was taken down and children received the gifts and treats that had been hanging on it since it had been first cut. John Hopkins Jr. had no children of his own, but had several nieces and nephews and often observed them counting down the moments until they could raid the evergreen. They, like so many, were unaware of the symbolism the bearing of gifts had to those brought by the wise men to Jesus.

In 1857 he decided his gift to his nieces and nephews would be a moving tribute to the legendary visitors from the East as described in the gospel of Matthew. As a seminary graduate, he knew little was known about the travelers so he combined the biblical record of the trip with legends that had been passed down.

The result is a song that is instructive and worshipful. The cadence of the melody fully captures the image of a trip across the desert and plains on camels. The hymn has an oriental, or Middle Eastern feel, and the words dramatically embrace the trip, as if he had been there with them.

John Hopkins Jr. served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and delivered the eulogy at the funeral of President Ulysses S. Grant. He died in 1885 in Hudson, NY and is buried next to his father at Bishop’s House, Rock Point, Vermont.

As we sing the refrain today, think of his powerful view of the star, guiding the wise men on their journey then, and all of us on our life’s journey now.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Astrologers from the east came looking for the newborn king of the Jews, which greatly disturbed King Herod. Herod wanted to kill Jesus, and asked the astrologers to return and tell him where Jesus was. The astrologers found Jesus and brought him gifts, but received a message in a dream telling them not to return to Herod.
