A Pledge to Parish Life My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is.

It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things.

Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be.

Celebrating Jesus’ Serious Sense of Humor The ‘Politics’ of Change - Everyone’s Responsibility JESUS WAS A MASTER AT USING HUMOR to embarrass people into changing their attitudes and behaviors. He knew that once a person could laugh at themselves there just might be an opening into the hard headedness or cold heartedness that prevents a person from receiving or sharing the mercy and kindness of God. Jesus also knew full well that this was a dangerous faith-formation strategy. When people can’t laugh at themselves they tend to become more reactive, even explosive. Inevitably that means trouble.

Keep in mind that today’s parable about the barren fig tree is not really at all about trees. It’s about the nation’s civil and religious leaders symbolized by the “tree” in this story. Try to imagine how Jesus’ peasant audience must have roared with laughter when he proposes the gardener’s strategy for the “tree” becoming more fruitful - spreading manure all around their feet instead of new soil or increased watering.

And yet ever hopeful of our change of heart - whether a leader or citizen of the nation - Jesus as gardener first intervenes on behalf of the tree with the plea “let it alone” - cleverly using the same word for “forgiveness” in his Aramaic language. The bottom line is this: No matter who you are, Jesus invites you to change, to grow, by trusting in the unconditional love of God.

Why is unconditional love such an effective conversion strategy? I think because it gives time for some grace-filled “politics”, that is to say, the necessary “conversations” for any and all real change. Sometimes the real challenge - as Jesus so often experienced - is how do you get the “conversation” (think “conversion”) started? In the spirit of our just completed Parish Mission, here are the three most important on-going conversations Jesus was sent to get started or keep going in our lives:

Conversation With Yourself Being honest with yourself will set you free for a “more abundant” life - more than you’ve ever knows.

Conversation With Others Asking someone you trust to help you see yourself and be different will confirm that you are “not alone”.

Conversation With God Giving your heart to God will reveal the “promising future” we hope for.

“God has gathered together as one all those who believe in Jesus and look on him as the author of salvation and the source of unity and peace.

God has established them as the Church so that for each and all, the Church may be the visible sign of that saving unity.”

Lumen Gentium, Light of the Nations, Constitution on the Church, 2nd Vatican Council

JESUS IN DISGUISE. How will you help? Next weekend our parish will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. CRS works at home and abroad to give aid to those who struggle, live in poverty, and are voiceless. The six organizations supported by the Collection provide humanitarian aid, resettle and welcome displaced individuals and families, and advocate on behalf of victims of atrocities such as human trafficking.

These Catholic agencies touch more than 100 million lives around the world providing food to the hungry support for displaced refugees, and representa-tion for the needs of voiceless people. How will you help? Next week, please give generously to the Catholic Relief Services Collection and Jesus in disguise. For more information about Catholic Relief Services I encour-age you to visit: www.usccb.org

Your commitment to Mass is a sign of the vitality of our parish. However, for the health of our whole community, if you are not feeling well, be attentive to these recommendations:

Don’t Come To Church …

lot with a runny nose or headache

When You Do Come To Church …

Use hand sanitizer at church entrances With slight symptoms of cold or flu — Don’t take communion from the cup Offer the sign of peace with a friendly

wave or simple bow

PATIENCE & SYMPATHY Key Qualities of Every Alzheimer’s Caregiver

The picture isn’t pretty when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease. More than 5 million Americans currently have the degenerative brain condition. There is no sure way to prevent it and the current treatment options don’t work for everyone. Even more millions are tasked with the daily care of those stricken with this memory-robbing disease, often with little or no experience or training. As the numbers of those with this disease have risen over the last few decades, research evi-dence has proved ways to make everyday life more bearable for those with the disease and to help those caring for them. It includes expanded knowl-edge of what works and what doesn’t in areas of medication, living situations, everyday contact and more, and ranges from complex to simple solutions. There are times when it may be very diffi-cult to handle a person with Alzheimer’s, but pa-tience is the key. Sometimes, you may have to put yourself in their shoes and try to understand what they are going through. One physician from the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board for the Alz-heimer’s Foundation of America feels that the greatest, initial problem is that caregivers often try to “preserve” the person they know as long as possi-ble. That is why the caregiver will let them drive, because they remember how the affected always enjoyed doing that. As caregivers, we may want to push our loved one to be the person they once were. If we don’t, we may feel like we have given up on our loved one. Experts on Alzheimer’s, literature on Alz-heimer’s and even your own doctors can guide you to resources on how to care for those with Alzheimer’s disease. If your loved one was once an avid reader but can no longer make sense of the words, read to them. If they like music, turn on the radio to their favorite type of music. Get out old photos and allow them to look though them, it will be very meaningful to them. If you repeat these activities everyday, so be it! Patience and sympathy, two key traits nec-essary for all caregivers of Alzheimer’s victims. May God’s Blessings Be Great, Buffy Modde, Parish Nurse at HNOJ

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE CLN STU-DENTS IN THEIR LENTEN SERVICE PRO-

JECT Each year the CLN students and staff take on a ser-vice project for Lent. This year we are participating in the Shoeman Water Project. “We’re turning shoes into water”. The Shoeman project collects donated shoes (from flip flops to high heels) and exports them to street vendors in places like Kenya, Haiti and South America, providing affordable shoes and jobs for those communities. The funds are used for well drilling rigs, water purification systems and training programs to bring clean, fresh water in those palaces. Here’s how you can help. We are collecting shoes you do not wear anymore.

Rubber band or tie each pair together. Bring shoes to Christ Light of the Nations We will be collecting shoes until Monday,

March 25. We will then pack the shoes for pick up and

shipping. The shoes you donate will be distributed to the street vendors so people without shoes can pur-chase them for pennies on the dollar. Please join us in this worthwhile service project.

Third Sunday of Lent

“He said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none.’” LUKE 13:7

Are we like the barren fig tree? What does God find when He searches for the fruits which we have given back? How will you respond when God asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has given you?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn’t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you’ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our newly‑scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Would like to publicly thank the BOMMARITO AUTO GROUP for going above and beyond the call of duty in repairing a truck that is used by the Society for the entire Northeast Deanery. This truck is in constant use by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to serve those in need in the North-east Deanery by picking up donations, assisting food pantries, delivering furniture, distributing fans, and other needs as they arise. The truck was in need of significant and costly repairs. The Management and technicians at Bommarito were extremely kind, generous and gracious to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and charged only a fraction of the total costs incurred. May God bless the Bommarito Auto Group for helping us help others.
