FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to a New Year of the Church – The first Sunday of Advent, Year B in our Liturgical Calendar. This weekend is quite historic in as much as we are also welcoming or actually implementing the New Translation of the Roman Missal – not a new Mass, just a new translation.

There’s going to be a lot of challenge in our responses at our liturgy. There’s going to be a lot of adjustments after 40 years of getting used to the old translation. It takes time, but it also allows us to be conscious of the words we say as we rediscover the meaning of our prayers.

Welcome also to our Holy Name School Alumni Class of 1971 as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary. So 40 years ago, they left HN when the last translation of the mass had just started and they are back on the day when the new translation is implemented.

We had a lot of HN Alumni gatherings and home-comings this year. It is nice to know they haven’t forgot-ten the school that gave them the foundation of their edu-cation. By their coming back, they are showing that HN has a special place in their hearts.

This weekend being the first Sunday of Advent, we are blessing and lighting our Advent Wreath. The sym-bolism of the Advent wreath is beautiful. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one thousand years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple and one is rose (or pink). The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ.

The light again signifies Christ, the Light of the world. Some modern day adaptions include a white can-dle placed in the middle of the wreath, which represents Christ and is lit on Christmas Eve.

Four weeks before Christmas, a pastor was leading chil-dren’s service featuring an Advent wreath. He had told them what the three purple candles represented, and then asked “Does anyone know what the pink one means? No one an-swered.

Finally little Sara’s hand went up. “Are they expect-ing a girl?”

ON GUARD The author of Saint Mark’s Gospel was what we call a straight shooter. His writing style is plain, with no elaboration or sophistication. In today’s Gospel reading he gets right to the point: be on your guard; stay awake; the Lord must not find you asleep when he arrives. Advent comes from the Latin word ad-venire, which means “to come to.” The season of Ad-vent, then, is a time to think about and to reflect on three advents in particular: God’s coming into the world as a human child, God’s coming into our world today, and God’s glorious coming at the end of time. These reflect three promises: God’s promise to bring salvation to all people, Jesus’ promise to be with those who follow him, and Jesus’ further prom-ise to return at the end of time. It is not enough simply to admire Jesus and be impressed by what he says. We are asked to take the extra step and follow the way of discipleship. We do not know where the path of discipleship will lead us, or when Christ himself will return. In the meantime we are the gate-keepers, the stewards, and the ones left in charge. Our responsibility is to stay alert and focused, even when others seem to be asleep or distracted, so that we are ready to welcome Christ into the world when he comes again. We are also asked to be atten-tive to the coming of God into our lives today: in the sacrament of Christ’s Body; in the unlikely guise of the homeless, the hungry, the prisoner, the addict in whom Christ appears before us; and in the Spirit who is within us. We are urged to live with hope in our hearts for Christ’s final return. Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

A Prayer for lighting Advent Candles

In the darkness we light a flame of hope. May it dance not only

upon our Advent wreath but within each of ours hearts as well.

Hope is the flower than blooms from the ground of faith. And so with joy, we keep the tradition of ages past as we encircle our Advent wreath

with love and prayer-ful expectation. May this Advent season

bring us a new birth of hope in the ancient promises of God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago in northern Europe, the growing dark and winter weather in Advent forced people to remove the wheels from their carts and replace them with snow runners. The wheels were hung high in the rafters of the house, fitted out with lan-terns, and wound tightly with evergreen boughs. The first wreaths were windows into heaven, a source of light, a comforting sign of the victory of the light of Christ over our world’s dark wilderness-es, its mountainous obstacles, its valleys of need. The Advent wreath started in the home, and only later appeared in church. Its four candles rep-resent the four Sundays of our journey: typically three purple, one rose. Why not set a wreath in your own home as a place for Advent prayer? Don’t let a shortage of purple candles discourage you: some use a deep blue, others have white candles and weave blue and purple flowers, seashells, and pine cones into the green. When the sun sets tonight, light a single candle, sing a verse of a well-loved Advent hymn, and name a mountain to be leveled, a valley to be filled. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE PRAYERS AT MASS? At Masses today, Catholic parishes in the United States are for the first time in about forty years using a new English translation of all the prayers. These prayers are found in The Roman Mis-sal, the large book that we are accustomed to seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies. In the ear-ly part of this century, the late Blessed Pope John Paul II called for the original Latin Missal (the offi-cial prayer book for Mass for the entire Catholic Church worldwide) to be re-translated into the vari-ous languages prayed throughout the world. In par-ticular, he and other Church leaders felt that the English translation could be improved. He called for new translations that would be much more like the Latin texts upon which they are based, so that all Catholics throughout the world would become more closely united by praying translations that were closer to the original. The words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is important that the translations capture and express these beliefs clear-ly. The translation process has come to a culmina-tion now, and today we begin using this new trans-lation at Mass. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY NAME YOUTH GROUP The Youth Group meets every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month after the 11:30 AM Mass. The youth group includes, but is not limited to, teens from ages 13 to 18 years old. Young adults are invited as well.

How can I make Advent more meaningful? This year I’ve promised myself I’ll make time for Advent reflection and prayer, but I don’t have huge blocks of time to spare. Any ideas? You don’t need huge blocks of time; you just need to recognize your opportunities. Each of the following activities takes only a few moments. Do all five every day, and soon you’ll feel very good about the amount of time you’re devoting to Advent.

1. Spend fifteen minutes in silence. As Psalm 46:11 says, “Be still and know that I am God!” 2. Light a prayer candle. Whenever you see the flame, offer a prayer on behalf of someone who is sick, hurting, or struggling. 3. Pray for each person you hear from. Christmas cards and e-mails often have news about the senders. Use that infor-mation to offer prayers of thanks-giving and help. 4. Be like the innkeeper. Extend compassion to a stranger—let someone ahead of you in line or give up your seat to a person hold-ing packages. 5. Reflect on Philippians 4:4. “Rejoice in the Lord always!” Ask yourself what blessings you’ve enjoyed today, and then thank God for them. At the end of Advent, choose one of these activities to do eve-ry day for the next year to keep the spirit of Advent and Christ-mas in your heart all year long.
