BRETT'S TWO-CENTS ~ [email protected]

So, the Grow Group! As I mentioned at Masses last weekend, Grow Group is something new that we’re offering this Fall. It’s open to anyone in the parish who would like to learn more about their faith, and — more importantly — grow in their faith, all in the company of friends. So, in addition to learning together, we’ll be praying together, doing some faith sharing, and hopefully having a lot of fun along the way! What will we be talking about in Grow Group? Lots of things! In general, we’ll be following a syllabus similar to RCIA’s, but we’re going to introduce a lot more flexibility and a bit more depth. So, in addition to talking about what the Catholic faith teaches, we want to take a hard look at the “so what.” How does this aspect of faith make a difference in terms of how I live my life, how I pray, what I’m living for, how I relate to others? We want to incorporate the opportunity to talk about “current events” in the light of faith. We want to devote some serious time to deepening our prayer. And we want to become better friends with our bibles. Along the way, we want to make some new friendships in the parish, and deepen others. How does all of that sound? If it’s intriguing, why not come join us? At this point, you don’t need to do anything other than show up, starting on September 19. We’ll meet at 6:30 p.m. in the daily Mass chapel (and possibly move to the church if our numbers get too big). We’ll finish by 8:00. All you need to bring is yourself and a bible. More on that next week. Thanks, everyone!

Be advised: there will be no coffee or doughnuts served on September 10 th.

COFFEE & DONUTS - VACATION DAY

GREETINGS FROM FR. DAVE ~ [email protected]

And school is up and rolling! Our hallways and playground are back to schoolyear energy after the quiet of the summer. I love the energy and enthusiasm our kids bring as they reconnect with their friends—and have to get used to getting up early again every morning! Come Holy Spirit and help students and teachers everywhere have a fine year. Please join us for our annual parish picnic THIS WEEKEND right after the 11:15 Mass. Our Events Committee has put together another fun and creative picnic to launch us into fall. Special welcome to new parishioners! Come and tap into the spirit of Holy Trinity. We do know how to relax and eat heartily! I will be leaving (finally!) for vacation on the 18th—after next weekend. Summer here has been intense,

especially with the arrival and then departure of Fr. Andrew. I am very ready for a break. I will do my annual retreat week (with the Franciscans) and spend the rest of the time on my property in Scappoose. Time with family, friends, and taking on some projects is my agenda—along with some leisurely reading, and daily kayaking. And, despite what Brett says (writes) about cats, Sammy will of course be with me. He is a huge blessing in my life! You’ll see me back mid-October. Congratulations and blessings to Skylene Acosta, Connor McBride, Dylan Kuletz, and Olivia Nguyen, who were baptized this weekend. Funeral services were held this week for Bob Fedr. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

The Filipino Community cordially invites you to the 13th Annual Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia on Saturday, September 16th. The Rosary will begin at 10:30am and Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am. A reception will follow in the cafeteria. For more information,

please call Monette & Franz Mallari at 503.307.3438.

In my column last week, I shared information from the 2017 Point-In-Time count report. This report documented the increase in the number of homeless living within Oregon and cited factors contributing to homelessness. One of the many difficult challenges that homeless and low income struggle with is various aspects of healthcare, including dental care. Over half of low-income adults lack dental insurance.

As a result, many preventable dental issues go untreated. Many studies have shown that oral health issues can be early signs of or lead to other serious diseases. In other words, dental healthcare is a big deal. I became acutely aware of the challenge for low-income families a few years ago when serving hot meals. Two adults were siting together having been served the same food. One was eating heartily, the other was picking.

When I asked if they did not like what was served, I was told that they very much liked the food but that it hurt their teeth to eat. They shared with me that they had been taking ibuprofen to dull the pain for weeks, but that it was having little effect that day. They knew they had multiple teeth in need of fillings, but they simply could not afford to get the work done, even at clinics for low income families.

With this in mind, starting October 6th, and hopefully for every month thereafter, Holy Trinity will host a mobile dental van. Provided by Medical Teams International (headquarters are in Tigard), the van is staffed by volunteer dentists and assistants. While the van is for those who financially qualify and provides only urgent care including fillings and extractions, it is a start.

If you or someone you know is a dentist who would be willing to provide additional services at low or no cost to those who need it, I would love to talk with you — please email or call me. Please pray for this ministry and those who so desperately need its services. Visit medicalteams.org for more information about their work and services.

RCIA & ADULT FAITH FORMATION Erin Nieves ~ [email protected]

RCIA 2017-2018 is Starting Soon! RCIA will meet Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm in the Fireside Room, beginning September 19th. Are you interested in learning more about the RCIA process before signing up? Come to a short informational meeting on Sunday, September 10th, from 10:45-11:45am in the Fireside room!

Sunday Morning Group We will meet from 10:45-12:00pm in the school’s art room (across from the kindergarten room that’s used for KidZone), from September 17th to November 12th. The nine weeks will be split into two chunks:

Bible Basics: A chance to help you navigate, find your way around, and get a beginner’s understanding of how things work. Part 1: Breaking open the book (September 17th) Part 2: God has a plan (September 24th)

Genesis to Jesus: A simple 7-week study that opens up what Catholics believe about salvation history in sacred scripture. Beyond what we believe, we’ll come to a deeper realization of how God has been working in our lives. (October 1st to November 12th)

Wednesday Morning Group: We will be studying Ephesians this fall, a study from Ascension Press and Jeff Cavins. We will meet on Wednesdays from 9:00-10:30am, September 20th to November 15th, in the Fireside room.

500th COMMEMORATION OF THE REFORMATION “From Conflict to Communion”

Jesus makes a special promise at the end of this weekend’s Gospel:

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt 18:20).

We have a wonderful opportunity to take Jesus up on this promise on Tuesday as we join with our relatives (brothers and sisters in Christ) from St. Andrew Lutheran Church to begin our second series of Meet Your Relatives.

The focus will be on The Five Ecumenical Imperatives that were listed in our July bulletins. The material for these discussions will be new, but the format will be the same used in the spring, with lots of time devoted to listening to each other.

The series begins on Tuesday, September 12th, and will continue on the four following Tuesdays (9/19, 9/26, 10/3, and 10/10). The meetings will be held at 10:00am at Holy Trinity and 7:00pm at St. Andrew. No advance sign-up or registration is required; simply come and join us on any or all of these Tuesdays at either session. There are several other important and interesting events on tap for October; keep an eye out in the bulletin for details in the coming weeks!
