Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Sunday Services: Orthros 8:15am, Divine Liturgy 9:30am The Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America recently convened via Teleconference, per the communication of the Chief Secretariat of the Synod, in order to discuss the celebration of Holy Week and Pascha. The Sacred Services will be offered in the Churches behind closed doors with only Fathers Gregory and Lucas, as well as Dean chanting. Services held at the Cathedral will be live streamed and can be found here: http:// www.holytrinityindy.org/live-stream/. The service schedule can be found on our website or on the back page of the Koinonia. Abiding by the regulations of State and Health authorities, there can be absolutely no distribution in any way of the traditional material offerings to the faithful; including palms, candles, Holy Unction, flowers, eggs and the Paschal Light. The Sacrament of Holy Confession and Prayer of absolution cannot be offered via the telephone or via electronic media. When we, by God’s grace, are able to come together again in prayer at a future date, hopefully during the 40 day Paschal season, the Holy Unction Service will be celebrated together as a Church Family and we will also “Come Receive the Light” at a future date as well. When we know more, we will make those announcements. May God bless you during these solemn days of Holy Week, and fill your hearts with the joy of the Resurrection!

The Office staff will return any pictures that are mailed. Digital pictures are more than welcomed. Please send digital images to: [email protected]. Assistance Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Evangelistria Philoptochos Chapter, Metropolis Philoptochos and National Philoptochos have Philanthropic Funds available to assist those in need. As we understand that families, both in and out of our parish in the area may struggle to meet basic needs during this time of social distancing and the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Cathedral and Philoptochos stand ready to assist to the degree we are able. If you would like to help with the effort, a directed gift may be given to the Cathedral with "Philanthropic Fund" on the memo line of your check. If you are in need of assistance, please contact the Church office, (317)-733-3033 or [email protected], to arrange a phone meeting with Father Gregory.

Holy Trinity on Facebook If you haven’t already Liked and Followed the Holy Trinity Facebook page, do so now! https://www.facebook.com/HolyTrinityIndy/ More resources for prayer and study are forthcoming through our page during this time of social distancing.

PRAYING SERVICES AT HOME After offering worship to God, the primary active role of the laity in worship is to offer up prayer for one another, and for the whole world. Whenever a deacon or priest exhorts the faithful “let us pray to the Lord” for each need, the people are to be interiorly, consciously offering a concrete prayer in response. This is the crucial conscious, active participation of the laity in worship. As churches have temporarily moved to closed services please remember that this role does not cease! In addition to watching services online it is important that we also offer them within our families, in our houses which have always been called ‘Small Churches’. Here is a link to service texts—at the very least, I commend to you the Typika Service for Sunday Morning. It is beautiful and simple, easily offered as a family, with the Scripture lessons proper to the day. Get up, shower and dress, assemble as a family in front of your Icon Corner, light your candles and incense if you have it when your parish’s Divine Liturgy is scheduled to begin, and offer this service together. http://www.agesinitiatives.com/dcs/public/dcs/dcs.html

Prayer for Protection against a Pandemic Lord Jesus Christ our God, You Who created human beings with utter

goodness, the healer of our souls and bodies, heed now the supplication of Your children, and save us from the impeding threat against the world. For this affliction has spread ferociously and the fear of death has surrounded us. Many have suffered and many have passed on to repose, and there is none to save us,

except You, O Lord.

We know, Merciful Lord, that all this will cultivate our faith, as we implore you, crying out in utter repentance. Undo, O Lord, the dangerous effects of the

virus and heal all people, as a most Gracious Lord. For those, who repose in peace, give rest in Your heavenly abode. Grant peace to the world, so that

all people know that You are the Only God, and your faithful are not bound by death, but live forever.

For You are our hope and our whole life is in Your benevolent hands, and to

You we give glory, as well as to the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters,

Being a Frontliner with IOCC provides me the opportunity to participate in and learn from different training seminars concerning times of crisis and disasters. During this time of dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic I will be sharing some tidbits from a recent seminar weekly.

During these times of sheltering in place, we can start to feel a sense of cabin fever. Some are experiencing fatigue from the constant state of vigilance. Doing small, creative fun activities can provide some much needed relief. This upcoming week is Holy Week, and of course, none of us imagined spending it this way. That does not mean you cannot experience Holy Week in anyway. Here are some tips I have seen. Try making “palm” crosses from other leaves that are long and narrow, but not necessarily palms. Put them up in your windows for people walking by to see. Go for a Palm Sunday procession as a family by taking your “palm” crosses with you when you go out for a walk. Look in your Holy Week books for the verses that start with “Today...” try to create a nice sign that uses that phrase for everyday to post in your home somewhere for all to see. If you have an Icon of Christ, decorate it with flowers or other items you can find for the Bridegroom services. Process the Icon around the Living Room and display it somewhere. When sitting together for the family meal on Thursday - read the passages from the Gospel about the Mystical (Last) Supper out loud together. Lay the Icon of Christ on a nice table that is decorated in some way and try to sing the lamentations on Holy Friday. Dye your eggs for Pascha on Holy Saturday. When you stream the services this week, get dressed as you would for Church, stand to pray, cross yourselves at the appropriate times, follow along in your Holy Week books; try to participate as best as you can. These are just a few ideas, there are probably many more you can come up with. Be creative, reflect on the meaning of each day of Holy Week together as a family and don’t forget - Pascha is NOT cancelled! Christ is still risen!

With much love in Christ,

Father Gregory Hohnholt
