Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Norwich

The Trinity Tribune March 2017 Edition

    To my Beloved family,

The last few weeks, the Triodion Period, we have been

called to self-reflection, repentance, and watchfulness in order

that we may accept Our Lord and God, who is all loving and

merciful. We have been reminded of this by the Fathers of the

Church, who have set the Triodion Period with the selected

weeks: The Publican and Pharisee, The Prodigal Son, and the

Sunday of the Last Judgement, to awaken us to these activities.

Now, as we begin our journey through lent, we have the

basic and fundamental weapons to use against the adversary.

Trying to hit the mark and attain salvation, we draw from our

quiver the first arrow of self-reflection so that we may examine

ourselves and move closer to a bullseye. Pulling out our second

arrow of repentance, we take aim, hoping to correct our mindset

and keep Christ as our focus. Watchfulness is our third strike at

the target, as we have been reminded of God’s mercy, we must

be mindful that our Lord will also come again as an impartial

judge at a time we do not know, lest we become lax in using our

arrows to try to hit the mark.

With lent, our quiver is refilled with more arrows to help

us focus on the bullseye, which is our Lord God and Savior Je-

sus Christ. We are blessed with the arrows of: Fasting, to help

purify us body and soul; The prayer of St Ephraim, to help us

maintain our humility and maintain our relationship with our

brothers and sisters; Confession, a second baptism to wash us

clean and whiter than snow; Salutations to The Theotokos,

seeking her intercessory prayers to fill us with God’s Grace for

health and strength against the adversary; Pre-sanctified Liturgy

to approach our Lord and God with fear, faith and love in order

to retain Him in us; More opportunity for fellowship, thus allow-

ing for the familial supportive relationship to endure through

    struggles.

These arrows are given to us to pierce through the obstacles of

the enemy and hit our target. To help us through our Lenten

journey, I invite you all to stay after Sunday Liturgy and partici-

pate in a new educational series, led by myself for our entire

family, I have titled, “Our Journey through Lent.” We will

briefly discuss the arrows we have been given to hit the target,

the obstacles between us and the target, and how practice makes

perfect. We will conclude every “Our Journey Through Lent”

with an open forum to ask question and seek support from our

church family. I also encourage our Young Adults, Seniors in

High School through the age of 30, married and unmarried, to

come and participate on Friday, March 24th, at 7pm for an even-

ing meal and a discussion on Lenten sacrifice and the light at the

    end of the tunnel.

    Have a Blessed Lent!

With Love in the Lord, Fr Demetri

Oratorical Festival Sunday, March 12, 2017

    Following

All children under 12 are encouraged

to join us on Saturday, March 4th from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in

the Church hall for prayer, discussion, crafts, and fellow-

    ship!

At our February Meeting we began with a prayer and then discussed

The Saint Ephraim prayer and how it acts as a "checklist" for nega-

tive and positive elements of repentance as we begin our journey

through Lent (sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, idle talk)

(chastity, humility, patience, and love). with a fun craft where the

children decorated crosses with foil and various gems. Each was

unique! We ended the day with a prayer and snacks of "snails and

    spiders."

If you have not attended one of our J.O.Y. gatherings, please know

that you are welcome to drop in at 2:00PM every first and third Satur-

day of the month. Don't miss

out on the fun and fellowship!

We encourage ALL CHILDREN through grade 12 to join us in the

Church hall immediately following Holy Communion for religious

education every Sunday. Anyone who would like to assist, please

speak with Fr. Demetri or Stacy Violette.

The demons either tempt us themselves or arm against us those who have no fear of the Lord. They tempt us themselves when we withdraw from human society, as they, tempted our Lord in the desert. They tempt us through other people when we spend our time in the company of others, as they tempted our Lord through the Pharisees. But whichever line of attack they choose, let us repel them by keeping our gaze fixed on the Lord's example.'
