Pick out your socks SLOWLY this Holy Week

This Lent has been a whirlwind. The circus-like atmosphere of the election season, travel-ing, and work has kept me busy and distracted.

The other day a local L’Arche community came to our convent and gave a presentation. L’Arche is a worldwide movement founded by Jean Vanier in which people with develop-mental disabilities or “core members” live together with “assistants” in a familial, homey atmosphere.

During the presentation, one of the assistants, Emma, shared an experience she had help-ing a core member named Katie pick out a pair of socks for the day.

Shamrocks? No.

Purple socks with yellow polka dots? No.

Katie examined the socks and then carefully put them to the side.

Emma said, “As I was standing there, I thought …”

Before she finished, I filled in the blank in my mind: How annoying! How long is this go-ing to take? Arghh!

But that is not what she said. “I thought, I am really lucky to be here, to be present to the world, even for a second, like Katie is,” Emma finished.

To be present to the world.

I was home recently and spent some time with my three-year-old niece, Ella. One day, as we were rushing out the door, Ella insisted on buckling the four buckles on her shoes by herself.

“We are in a hurry, Ella!” I said, irritated.

Ella looked at me completely serene, as if we had all the time in the world, and said firm-ly, “I do it myself.”

This Holy Week, I am taking a cue from Ella and Katie, two people who approach life in a way that allows them to savor each moment.

The clouds of incense on Holy Thursday, the dark, bare drama of Good Friday juxtaposed with the gold and white of lilies crowding the sanctuary on the Easter Vigil.

I want to taste and touch and feel every moment of this Holy Triduum, this pause in our year, this gift that allows us to celebrate the fact that we have been saved.

We may feel lost in the whirlwind of our lives and crazy current events, but we have been saved.

We have been saved.

Just for this week I refuse to be derailed. I will enter the silence of salvation, the pause in our liturgical cycle, the epicenter of history with Jesus. The circus will continue, but in the meantime hopefully you can find me, like Ella and Katie, being present, being with Jesus.

Commentary Corner This week’s commentary explains the significance of the Jewish Passover Seder.

The synoptic evangelists identify the Last Supper as a Passover supper, traditionally called a Seder meal. This is significant because the Passover Seder is a liturgical feast resonant with themes of redemption and thanksgiving. It commemorates Israel’s exodus deliverance from Egypt and the covenant forged between the Lord and his people. In ancient Israel, these events were celebrated with a meal of lamb, unleavened bread, and bitter herbs (Exod 12:8). The lamb was sacrificed and eaten in memory of Israel’s escape from death (Exod 12:21-27). Unleavened bread symbolized the haste with which Israel fled from bondage on Passover night (Exod 12:33-34), and bitter herbs reminded them of the bitterness of slavery left behind (Exod 1:13-14). In later centuries the Seder developed into a more elaborate ritual feast. The meal of the lamb, unleavened bread, and bitter herbs remained central, but the menu was expanded with other items too, such as wine, green herbs, and a mixture of fruits and nuts mashed together with cinna-mon and wine called haroset. Hymns of praise also became a regular fea-ture of the paschal liturgy (Pss 113-118, called the Hallel Psalms), as did a formal retelling of the exodus story (called the Passover Haggadah). Jewish participants were to regard the Passover as more than just a time to remember their history They were to think of themselves as reliving the exodus, as coming forth again from Egypt and tasting the Lord’s salva-tion anew. It was to be a liturgical memorial in which the past and present come together as one (Exod 12:14).

From Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture

Minute Meditation “Prayer joined to sacrifice

constitutes the most power-ful force in human history”

-Pope St. John Paul II

Catechism of the Catholic Church Jesus' ascent to Jerusalem: 557 “When the days drew near for him to be taken up [Jesus] set his face to go to Jerusalem.” By this decision he indi-cated that he was going up to Jerusalem prepared to die there.

558 Jesus recalls the martyrdom of the prophets who had been put to death in Jerusalem. Nevertheless he persists in calling Jerusalem to gather around him: “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!” When Jerusalem comes into view he weeps over her and expresses once again his heart's desire: “Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hid from your eyes.”

Jesus' messianic entrance into Jerusalem: 559 How will Jerusalem welcome her Messiah? Although Jesus had always refused popular at-tempts to make him king, he chooses the time and prepares the details for his messianic entry into the city of “his father David”. Acclaimed as son of David, as the one who brings salvation (Hosanna means “Save!” or “Give salvation!”), the “King of glory” enters his City “riding on an ass”. Jesus conquers the Daughter of Zion, a figure of his Church, neither by ruse nor by violence, but by the humility that bears witness to the truth. And so the subjects of his kingdom on that day are children and God's poor, who ac-claim him as had the angels when they announced him to the shep-herds. Their acclamation, “Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord”, is taken up by the Church in the “Sanctus” of the Eucharistic liturgy that introduces the memorial of the Lord's Passover.

560 Jesus' entry into Jerusalem manifested the coming of the kingdom that the King-Messiah was going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection. It is with the celebration of that entry on Palm Sunday that the Church's liturgy solemnly opens Holy Week.

Rome Sweet Home Today’s liturgy teaches us that the Lord has not saved us by his triumphal entry or by means of powerful miracles. The Apostle Paul, in the second reading, epit-omizes in two verbs the path of redemption: Jesus “emptied” and “humbled” himself (Phil 2:7-8). These two verbs show the boundlessness of God’s love for us. Jesus emptied himself: he did not cling to the glory that was his as the Son of God, but be-came the Son of man in order to be in solidarity with us sinners in all things; yet he was without sin. Even more, he lived among us in “the condition of a serv-ant” (v. 7); not of a king or a prince, but of a servant. There-fore he humbled himself, and the abyss of his humiliation, as Holy Week shows us, seems to be bot-tomless.

-Pope Francis, Homily 3/20/16

Time, Talent, or Treasure

Jesus enters Jerusalem and, for the first time, permits the crowd to give him the homage owed to a king. The crowd takes the cloaks from their backs to cover the path taken by the ass and colt Jesus rides. To the people of a democratic nation, this act of reverence for one man might seem shocking and even repulsive. But Jesus is not merely a man, and he is not merely a king, but, indeed, he is the God-man and, therefore, the King of kings. When Jesus appears in our midst disguised as the poor; or when he dwells in our homes wear-ing the faces of our children and spouses; or when he acts through the person of the priest at Holy Mass; how do we respond? Do we lay down our cloak for him who died to be King of our lives? Do we offer him our time, talent, and treasure befitting a Lover who was fir st so generous as to give us his life?

On Holy Thursday Jesus washes the feet of the disciples and our feet:

“He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Master, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will un-derstand later.’ Peter said to him, ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Unless I wash you, you will have no inher-itance with me.’...So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, ‘Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me “teacher” and “master,” and rightly so, for in-deed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teach-er, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.’” (Jn 13:6-8,12-15)

Prayer for Palm Sunday and Holy Week

This prayer is designed to be said within the family before a Crucifix on Palm Sunday and during Holy Week.

Mother or a child: Dear ly beloved, in Holy Week, when the most bitter suffer ings of Jesus Christ are put before us by the liturgy, the Church invites us to come to Calvary and follow in the blood-stained footsteps of the Divine Redeemer, to carry the Cross willingly with Him, to repro-duce in our hearts His spirit of expiation and atonement, and to die together with Him.

Father: We ought to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ

Family: in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection.

Father: Let us pray. All-powerful, eternal God, You have chosen to give mankind a model of humil-ity; our Savior took on our flesh, and subjected Himself to the Cross. Grant us the grace to preserve faithfully the lessons He has given us in his Passion and to have a share in His resurrection. This we ask of You through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son.

Family: Amen. Favor this dwelling, Lord, with Your presence. Far from it repulse all the wiles of Sa-tan. Your holy angels, let them live here, to keep us in peace. And may your blessing remain always upon us. This we ask of You through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son.

Father: Let us bless the Lord.

Family: Thanks be to God.

Father: May the almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless and keep us.

Family: Amen
