Late in the afternoon, various towns and villages commemorate the Passion of the Christ with a solemn procession of statues carried by bearers, each of which represents a particular episode of the Passion. Between one statue and another, participants dressed as biblical characters follow the procession. Many processions also include men bearing a cross or dragging chains tied to their bare feet as an act of faith or penance. Sunday 16th April 2017 St Paul’s Church Valletta: 18:00hrs PICK UP FROM HOTEL TO CASTILLE AT 17:30hrs PICK UP FROM CASTILLE TO HOTEL 20:30hrs The mood changes completely on Sunday, when the ringing of church bells announces the Resurrection of Christ. In the morning on Easter Sunday, a statue of the Risen Christ is carried through the streets, accompanied by a marching band playing festive tunes. The procession concludes with the statue-bearers triumphantly running through the streets, until the statue is returned to the church. Traditionally, children are given chocolate-coated Easter eggs and a ‘figolla’, which is an almond-filled pastry in the shape of a rabbit, lamb, fish or heart, covered in icing sugar.
