Palm Sunday We begin today the most solemn week in the church liturgical year. It begins with Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. People are rejoicing. People are excited about this Messiah who has come to save them from their sin, to bring them new life. What is so important to notice is that Jesus doesn’t come riding into Jerusalem on a great horse. He comes on a donkey, an image of an ordinary animal of burden. There is nothing trium-phant or powerful in that means of entry. What Jesus is trying to say is: “I come into this situation not as one filled with human power to conquer what is there. I come in powerlessness.” That is the hardest thing for us to comprehend about this figure Jesus: He teaches us all about the power of powerlessness. Of submission. Of giving in. Of acceptance. But today’s festive entrance should not overpower the focus of this liturgy – the Pas-sion of our Lord. On this day, the church proclaims the story of the Lord's passion and death, and we shall hear it again in St. John's account on Good Friday. We enter Holy Week with mixed emotions: sadness, because we know the cross is coming; joyful confidence, because we know that resurrection is coming too. Many of us can identify with today’s responsorial psalm which is the prayer of Jesus on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” It is when we feel this way that we put to practice what Jesus shows us with his entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey; to find power in the powerless moments of our lives.

Domingo de Ramos Comenzamos hoy la semana más solemne del año litúrgico en la iglesia. La misma comienza con la entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén. Hoy el pueblo se regocija lleno de en-tusiasmo con este Mesías que ha venido a salvarles de su pecado; a traerles vida nueva. Lo más importante en notar, es que Jesús no entró a Jerusalén cabalgando sobre un gran caballo blanco. El viene en un burro, un imagen de un animal normal, que se usa para cargar cosas. No hay nada triunfal o poderoso en ese medio de entrada. Lo que Jesús está tratando de decir es: “Vengo a ésta situación no como uno lleno de poder para conquistar lo que hay aquí. Al con-trario, vengo impotente. “Esto es lo más difícil de compren-der sobre esta figura de Jesús: él nos enseña sobre el po-der de ser impotente; de someternos, de entregarnos, de la aceptación. Sin embargo, la entrada festiva de hoy no de-be dominar el foco de esta liturgia que es- la Pasión del Señor. En este día, la iglesia proclama la historia de la pasión y muerte de Jesús y lo escucharemos de nuevo en el evan-gelio de San Juan el viernes Santo. Entramos en semana santa con emociones mezcladas: tristeza porque sabemos que la Cruz está por venir y alegría a la vez porque sabe-mos que la resurrección se acerca también. Muchos de nosotros podemos identificarnos con el salmo de hoy, que es la oración de Jesús en la cruz, “¿Dios mío, Dios mío, porque me has abandonado?” Es cuando nos sentimos así, que ponemos en práctica lo que Jesús nos muestra con su entrada en Jerusalén sobre un burro; el encontrar poder en los momentos impotentes de nuestras vidas.

STEWARDSHIP CORRESPONSABILIDAD March 20, 2016

How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or the Catholic faith? How do you react? Do you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance or worst yet, because you don’t want your friends or family to think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue.

ALL MINISTERS who are part of the Holy Week services should attend rehearsals properly prepared. Schedule is as follows: Monday, March 21 at 6:00pm in English, 7:00pm in Spanish for all Good Friday services. Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30pm rehearsal for Holy Thursday. Mass Rehearsal for Easter Vigil is on Holy Saturday, March 26th from 12:00pm 2:00pm. These rehearsals are of utmost importance. All ministers must attend.
