In the last 12-18 months we have implemented a new student leadership program including a greatly enhanced selection process, begun explicitly teaching our students the skills and ‘Habits’ of effective learners, and reduced our reliance on awards and external rewards that had lost their links to student behaviour, effort or evidence of growth. Developing our skill and experience with Personal Leadership will earn respect from our peers and inevitably leads to a more Public form of Leadership. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 3. Our celebration of Education begins with Week 3 dedicated as Education Week in all NSW Public Schools. The theme for 2019 Education Week is:

“Every Student, Every Voice” This is particularly relevant to us here at Ironbark Ridge as we have been working closely with our Student Leadership Team all year to involve them in school transformation and improvement. Our fortnightly ‘breakfast meetings’ are held in our Library and allow our Student Leaders to discuss their ideas and opinions, brainstorm solutions to school problems, and design plans for change to build School Spirit, improve our Environmental Sustainability and to Leave a Legacy to benefit future students. 100 Days of Kindergarten! Thursday this week (25/7) marked the milestone of one hundred days at ‘big school’ for our current Kindy students. What a wonderful achievement! Thanks to parents and carers for all of your hard work in designing and making T-shirts celebrating the event. I had such fun counting by tens to one hundred and marvelling at the earnest construction of ‘fruit-loop’ necklaces with one hundred tasty treats to save for later. Students had a wonderful day filled with 100-themed learning activities. Huge thanks to our Kindy teaching team, led by our recently promoted Assistant Principal, Ms Sexton (Congratulations!)

Favourite T-shirt messages of the day: “I ninja’d my way through 100 days”, “Thumbs up for 100 days smarter”, “I lasted 100 days!” and the simply put “The best 100 days of my life!” Questioner (the next Successful Learner Habit) This fortnight we are all developing our skills as QUESTIONers. Successful Learners are curious, seeking more information, interrogating the truth to find meaning, wondering about what’s next... and asking questions to deepen their understanding. As we travel along our learning journey we can help ourselves through asking questions at key moments. When we are stuck and unsure what to do next in moments of difficult learning, asking a question, even of ourselves, can prompt new and novel ideas, creative solutions to our problems. Getting into the Habit of Questioning will promote active learning. Note that this skill involves more than the “Why?” we endured when our children were at their 2-3yr old age… sentral Parent Portal

Apart from the unfortunate error we made with our Interviews schedule auto-opening before we had organised teacher availability (in the holidays instead of this week - Sorry!), we are happy with the functions it is providing to us all. To have student Reports available for download and viewing at any time through both the internet portal and the linked sentral app is fantastic. Notifying school admin of student absences and reasoning is convenient and efficient through the portal… you can even view historical attendance records for your child. We are able (as

you’ve no doubt seen) to send ‘push notifications’ via the app, although the inclusion of visual stimuli (the reason I love Fb!) is not yet possible. Publishing newsletters, loading and storing previous years’ reports, and eventually obtaining online permission for school events and activities will follow If you experience any problem in accessing the Parent Portal or in linking your mobile device app to your child’s data please give us a call in the school office and we’re happy to help trouble-shoot. Parent-Teacher Interviews Next week we are holding formal interview opportunities for you to come and meet with your children’s teacher(s). Please remember that you can always email or phone our school office at any time during the year to arrange a time to sit and chat to your teacher about your child’s learning progress and growth. Teachers may in fact contact you if we feel a discussion will help in our partnership to guide and support your child’s growth. I look forward to speaking with many of you across the next week as you arrive for or leave after these meetings. Swimming elite! Good luck to the amazing Suzy A (6/5M) who heads off late next week to swim against the nation’s best 11 year olds at the Australian Swimming Championships. Suzy is already a champion in our eyes and joins a tiny club of Ironbarkers who have represent us all at nationals. Go Suzy!! (Check out the special ‘Suzy’ article a few pages into this newsletter)

Parenting Teenagers A free webinar entitled “Harnessing a teenager’s ability to exert self-control” is available at: https://www.parentshop.com.au/engaging-adolescents-2/?inf_contact_key=b2642b612435556987aecda9355e078f1b0a3f0fd3ee5d9b43fb34c6613498d7 As many of our families have older children currently in High School I thought it could be worth watching. The online ‘webinar’ runs for almost an hour and contains some wonderful ideas and suggestions for helping our slightly older children to negotiate the windy paths of growing up in this world.

Crossing Withers Rd… The frustrating visual reminder of our almost complete traffic signals at the top of Ironbark Ridge Rd continues to be unaltered. I’d be devastated if a student or community member was hurt by a car whilst crossing Withers Rd in an unsafe manner during this time so please take care and remind your children of the extreme danger. To walk an extra kilometre down to the crossing at Commercial Rd seems a long way, however it remains the safest way for our students to cross to this side of Withers Rd during the high traffic times of 9am and 3pm. Please stay safe until the RMS can resolve this situation and switch the lights at our intersection ON.

Phonics Knowledge… a crucial reading skill I have had a fabulous time over the past two school weeks assessing all of our 162 Year One students’ knowledge of letter-sound relationships… used to decode words when we read! Our Kindergarten and Year One teachers explicitly (and systematically) teach their students about the sounds that letters, letter pairs, and groups of letters make in English. Due to the multiple origins of the English language, our 44 phonemes (sounds) can be written with letters (encoded) in over 200 different ways! Wow! No wonder learning to read and write is a complex process! The phonics check will provide our teaching team with rich and valuable information about the specific learning points and ongoing practice each individual student needs in order to reach mastery of Phonics. Spending between five and ten minutes chatting to every individual student in Year One has been a wonderful privilege Next… Year 2! Canteen, aka The Ridgy-Didge Kids’ Fridge

Late last term we received a long-awaited addition to the front of our canteen building – in the form of colourful signage. Our students (and Doris) are all loving the new look of our shopfront. The historical hand-made “Ridgey Didge Fridge” sign will be cleaned and re-hung in good view on the walk-through to the Hall end of the Canteen building for all to see and enjoy as well.

Yours in partnership, Nick Thomson Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT Welcome Back Welcome back everyone we hope that you had a great holiday with time to relax and enjoy the beautiful winter weather. To all new families who have recently joined our team, we extend a warm welcome. Our aim in Term 3 is to continue to develop and build collaborative partnerships with students, staff, families and various communities and other organisations which support and develop our school. As Deputy Principals, we are humbled and delighted with the dedication, perseverance and positive impact of our students, teachers and parents. Our pride in our school is palpable and we look forward to an exciting term of growth, personal development and learning. Teacher Professional Learning On Monday, whilst students enjoyed their last day at holiday, staff engaged in professional learning with a number of schools from the Hills area. In particular, teachers had a deeper look at the importance of wellbeing. This included a presentation from Michael Grose on how to create a positive environment for learning with our anxious kids and how children can turn their anxiety into resilience. As teachers, we play an important role in providing learning experiences and opportunities that develop and shape the character and wellbeing of children and young people in our care. Experiences that develop character by promoting mindfulness (self-regulation and behaviour), curiosity, courage, resilience, ethics and leadership benefit children and young people as they grow and develop. At Ironbark, we focus on giving our students voice, being active learners and developing strong character qualities that will enable them to succeed, thrive and contribute positively throughout life. Open Day The Ironbark Ridge Public School would like to invite our school community to our Open Day and Book Fair on Tuesday 6th August 2019 beginning at 11:30 am. This will include visiting our classrooms, engaging in our dynamic learning and viewing our performances both at school and Castle Towers. The theme of this year’s Education Week is ‘Every Student, Every Voice.’ At Ironbark Ridge we welcome the opportunity for our students and teachers to showcase great teaching and learning practice. Selective Exam Results Congratulations to all our students who sat for the selective exam. The results were announced during the July school holidays, and again our school achieved outstanding results. 42 students received a placement at a selective high school. Respectful Relationships In this community, we are all working together to achieve the very best outcomes for our children. This is done most effectively through clear boundaries, respectful communication and interaction. At all times our charter is that we work in partnership to promote student learning, we treat each other with respect and fairness, and we communicate in a positive and constructive manner. It is important that it extends to our non-teaching staff including office and RMS Crossing Supervisor. Earn and Learn Throughout Term 2 many parents supported Earn and Learn. Overall, we collected over 64,000 stickers. Woolworths has been extremely busy and we will shortly receive an email allowing us to make our purchases. Sincere thanks to all parent volunteers including Mrs Young and Mrs Doherty as well all families who supported Earn and Learn, a huge thanks to Woollies, and a special thanks to our parents for coordinating this huge task.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Each stage is busily engaged in the process of organising parent/teacher interviews. This is an excellent opportunity to meet with our families and build partnerships that connect learning at home and school. Parent engagement in learning is known to lead to improved outcomes for students of all ages. Leadership Skills and Training The skills of personal and organisational leadership are qualities valued for all our students. On Wednesday 31st July at 2 pm we will celebrate the induction of our SRC representatives into our leadership team. We will also acknowledge our ‘Buddies’ and the wonderful work that they do in the playground. Formal leadership training will begin this term for all students in Stage 3 who have aspirations of applying for an official leadership position in 2020 or developing individual skills. It is a must for any student wishing to apply for a formal leadership position next year. Setting High Expectations Our high expectations extend to our presentation, wearing the uniform and ensuring all students arrive at school before 9 am. Arriving on time for school and class:

• Ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day when they are most alert.

• Early morning learning activity is often reading or writing your child can lose so many opportunities to learn these critical life skills.

• Helps your child to learn about routines and commitment. • Gives your child time to greet their friends before class and this can reduce the possibility of

disruptions in the classroom. • Class disruption can make your child feel uncomfortable and can upset other children. • Arriving on time every day makes children feel good about themselves

The most important aspects of arriving on time are that it drives a sense of belonging, shows pride and develops the foundation of effective long-term habits. We appreciate parents and carers making every effort to ensure children are at school on time each day. Be Skilled Be Fit In Term 3, our 3-6 students will have gymnastics lessons. These lessons are run by highly skilled and trained teachers from Be Skilled Be Fit. They will provide all the necessary equipment and expertise to run lessons in this highly specialised field of Physical Education. http://www.beskilledbefit.com.au/ Whole School Assembly Next week’s whole school assembly will include an induction of our Semester 2 SRC class representatives and Ridgy Didge Buddies as well as a presentation of ribbons from last term’s Athletics Carnival. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend. We will begin in the school hall at 2pm. Effective Communication with Parents and Carers An essential aspect of maintaining effective communication is up-to-date contact information of parents and carers. Parents are asked to ensure that all contact details, held by the school, are up to date. This is especially important in instances where children may require immediate medical attention due to accident or illness. If you have changed any of your details, please inform the office in writing. FOOD ALLERGY ALERT To help minimise the risk of life-threatening allergic reactions, we ask all parents to refrain from packing foods that contain peanuts or tree nuts in lunch boxes. Help us protect our students. Kerrie Pho and Kerry De Jager Deputy Principals

Kindy Capers

Welcome back to a new term full of exciting things including the arrival of our chickens and our trip to the farm. This term, our integrated unit is “Down on the Farm” and it incorporates key aspects of our science topic – Living Things. The arrival of our chickens is fast approaching and both the students and teachers are very excited. A quick reminder that the Henny Penny Hatchings note and payment is due by the 2rd of August and the Calmsley Hill City Farm note and payment is due by the 16th of August. Education Week will be held during week 3 where we will be having open classrooms and performances held by our school dance groups – including our very own Kindy dance group. This term also sees the first of our Kindergarten assembly items. Please check the school calendar to find out the date your class is hosting. These assemblies are held every Wednesday from 2:20pm and parents/caregivers are more than welcomed to attend. On the 25th of July Kindergarten celebrated their successful completion of 100 days at school – what a great time we had. Students spent the day participating in different activities that focused on the number one hundred. A big thank you to parents/carers for all your efforts helping create such amazing 100 day T-shirts at home. It was lovely to see so many students dressed up for this special occasion. Congratulations to all our students, we are very proud with all that you have accomplished during your first 100 days of big school.

Stage 1 Snippets Welcome back to a new busy, exciting and fun-filled term! All Stage 1 teachers would like to welcome back all students as classes jump right back into learning. Just a reminder that with all the work we have been doing in the first half of the year, students may require necessary stationery including HB pencils, glue and scissors. We would greatly appreciate if parents could check their child’s pencil cases and replace these items, along with coloured pencils, crayons and textas as they are always exciting to use! It is important that students have headphones as they are regularly used for activities within the classroom. Some classrooms may also be running low on essentials including paper towels, soap and tissues and may therefore need a top up. Teachers will notify you if this is the case. The cold weather is still upon us and so winter uniform is a requirement for Term 3. Sport uniform is still to be worn according to each year and class. Please ensure that students also have their hat in order for them to play on the grass. During Week 1, parents have had the opportunity to book a ten minute interview with their child’s classroom teacher. Stage 1 teachers look forward to discussing the learning and achievements of their students throughout Semester one. We encourage parents to continue to read with their child and engage in many conversations about what they are learning at school. We look forward to another busy and successful term in Stage One! Stage 1 Teachers

Stage 2 Snippets

Welcome back to another exciting term of learning and fun. We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday break. This week many classes have spent time learning about the amazing Apollo 11 mission. There have been many rich discussions about the topic and some a-ha moments (including making the connection between Buzz Aldrin and Buzz Lightyear). We think we have a few aspiring astronauts in our mix!

Recently Stage 2 students have been building programs to control LED strip lights using Cubits. Everyone has had a wonderful time exploring the functionality of the smartware components and the coding blocks.

Parent/teacher meetings are taking place next week. We look forward to meeting with you to provide further insight into your child’s learning journey. A friendly reminder to please be on time for your ten minute appointment. Teachers may need to attend a meeting with other colleagues, so any meetings that start late may have to be cut short. If you need additional time to discuss matters further with your child’s classroom teacher this can be arranged for an alternative date.

A reminder for those Year 4 students sitting the OC test that this is taking place at school on Wednesday 31st July. Students will need to bring their test authority letter with them and will need to be at school by 8.45am for a 9.00am start. Open day is coming up in Week 3. The book fair will be in the library, classrooms will be open and a range of exciting activities have been planned. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 6th August.

We have a wonderful excursion planned in September, when students will be visiting the Walkabout Wildlife Park at Calga. Students will be taking part in a ‘Welcome to Country Workshop’ where they will learn about traditional bush tucker, bush medicine and bush skills. Permission notes are on the school website. Please return your payment and permission note before Friday 16th August to secure your place on this exciting adventure!

This term students will be taking part in gymnastics lessons with Be Skilled Be Fit. Lessons will take place every Thursday (except for 4P who will have their lessons every Monday). Please ensure students wear their sports uniform on this day. The fee for gymnastics lessons have been included in your term invoice. Consent forms (located on the school website) must be completed by week 2, and payment is due by Friday 16th August. Sports uniform should also be worn every Friday when students will be taking part in fitness and dance lessons.

Stage 3 Snippets Welcome back from the holidays. We hope that all Stage 3 students and their families have had a safe and fun break. Term 3 promises to be very exciting and busy.

There is always something new and innovative happening in Stage 3 and we were lucky enough this term to obtain a Stemshare 3D printing kit. To use this students will be learning CAD – Computer Aided Drawing - on Tinkercad to then put their design through splicer software to print the 3D object. Sounds confusing but the students who have had the opportunity to do this so far have done an amazing job. A special mention to Oliver B 6/5M who worked throughout his holidays to design our first 3D Ridgy. What a fantastic job he did! Many students in Year 5 will be taking part in leadership training on a Monday. This allows them to continue to develop the skills needed to put themselves forward for the 2020 leadership team, where they will demonstrate passion and commitment as leaders at Ironbark Ridge.

Education Week commences in Week 3. Various students will be practising in preparation for their performances taking place in and out of school. To those students, good luck and enjoy.

Parent interviews will commence in Week 2. It is a valuable chance to converse with parents and caregivers, to recognise students’ strengths and goals. Please start planning your book character costumes, the parade will take place in Week 8 – Wednesday 11th September. Teachers are very excited and have been busily preparing their costumes already! Our Year 6 students look wonderful in their shirts; however, there are lots of students wearing them on the wrong day of the week. They are allowed to wear their shirts on

the day they participate in Be Skilled Be Fit, either a Monday or a Thursday, as well as on a Friday. Dance group are also allowed to wear theirs on a Wednesday. This term we are lucky to have Be Skilled Be Fit to teach gymnastics to our students. During Week 1 all students are able to participate. It is a wonderful program and the equipment the students are fortunate to have access to, make these lessons engaging and exciting– ask you children how much they love it! Check term invoices for payment details. A reminder – the beginning of term is the perfect time to check your child’s supplies of pens, pencils, glue sticks and scissors and restock them as needed. We are now using a new sales system in the uniform shop so please be patient with us as we learn it. This will mean a few changes for you as customers.

• All receipts will now be sent electronically by text or email. You will need to provide this detail at time of purchase. If you choose not to then refunds/returns will be unavailable to you.

• Refunds/returns will now only be accepted strictly within 90 days of purchase & you will have to show your receipt. Goods must be in an as sold condition.

• We no longer accept Union Pay credit cards

• We now accept AMEX From Term 3 all online sales will be from our new website NOT Flexischools. The website address is :

https://ironbark-ridge-public-school-pc-association.square.site/

• Payments are by VISA / Mastercard / Amex only

• Choose "Shipping" if you wish to have your order sent to KTOOSH

• "Note to Sender" please ensure that you put your child's FULL NAME & CLASS in this box for all orders

Whilst these changes will not suit everyone, they have been made with consideration to those who volunteer in the Uniform Shop and for reporting/ordering purposes. All our stock is now more manageable in one place & we can sell to more people at the same time rather than waiting on one till. The online store now has items such as House accessories and Hair ribbons that we were unable to put on flexischools. If you have any issues or find any errors/problems on the website please contact us on [email protected].

CHESS!! Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Ironbark Ridge Public School is held on Mondays from 3:10pm to 4:10pm, starting on 29 July 2019.

Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

If your child is interested in taking part, you can collect an enrolment form from the school office, or email [email protected] for a copy. For all enquiries, please contact Sydney Academy of Chess on (02) 9745 1170.
