American homeowners are increasingly drawn to adding outdoorrooms for entertaining and recre-ation on their properties. That’swhat the most recent ResidentialLandscape Architecture Trendssurvey conducted by theAmerican Society of LandscapeArchitects discovered. The surveyresults also show demand forboth sustainable and low-mainte-nance design. Landscape architects who spe-cialize in residential design wereasked to rate the expected popu-larity of a variety of residentialoutdoor design elements. The cat-egory of outdoor living spaces,defined as kitchens and enter-tainment spaces, received a 94.5percent rating as somewhat orvery popular. Ninety-seven per-cent of respondents rated firepits and fireplaces as somewhator very in demand, followed bygrills, seating and dining areas,and lighting. Decorative water elements—including waterfalls, ornamentalpools and splash pools—were pre-dicted to be in demand for homelandscapes. Spas and pools arealso popular. Terraces, patios and decks arealso high on people’s lists. Americans prefer practical yetstriking design elements for theirgardens including low-mainte-nance landscapes and nativeplants. In addition, more people are opt-ing for food and vegetable gar-dens, including orchards andvineyards. Good To Know If you’re thinking of joiningthem, a few food-growing factsand hints may help: • Food gardens can be easy,rewarding and sustainable. Forstarters, you can use fallen leavesin autumn and grass clippings inspring and summer as mulch andweed suppressant. • Perennial plants can be lowmaintenance—they come backevery year without replanting.Some great examples includeasparagus, blueberries, blackber-ries and rhubarb. • Herbs can make for an especial-ly sustainable food garden, asmany prefer hot and dry areas ofyour yard, with chives, sage andtarragon returning every year.
