Mark Your Calendar:
Dear Silverdale Families,
In December, I talked to you about the ins and
outs of the business of teaching and learning and
what it looks like as I visit the classrooms each
day. After break, a little re-teaching happens as
staff works hard to get students back into their
academic routines. Luckily, students bounce back
very quickly and they pick up right where they left
off.
Right before break, our school hosted our first
Awards Assembly of the school year. This was an
opportunity for teachers to recognize two students
in their classroom for Academic Achievement, two
students for Citizenship and two students for Per-
severance. The assembly was well received by both
staff and students because it gave students an op-
portunity to be recognized as well as it gave other
students a chance to get excited about the possi-
bility to earn recognition at our next awards
assembly in April.
As I mentioned in December, for the next few
weeks, students will be working hard on the Char-
acter Counts Pillar of “Citizenship”. As a staff, we
are focusing on encouraging students to do their
share to make their school and community a better
place, cooperate, get involved in community activi-
ties, stay informed, obey laws and rules, respect
authority and protect the environment
At our assembly in December, students were en-
couraged to pick an academic area that may not be
their easiest or favorite and set goals to become
more focused and intentional about learning the
material. What this could mean is paying closer at-
tention to the teacher and taking extra time to
think about the material during in-class work time
as well as during practice at home. Our goal is to
support students to make good choices
surrounding academics so that they can feel that
their choice to become more “responsible” for
their learning pays off.
Thank you for echoing our message at home sur-
rounding “Citizenship” with your children. We will
continue to challenge our students to do their
very best over the upcoming months- especially as
they begin the process of preparing to show what
they know as assessed on the SBA in May.
As always, I welcome your ideas and feedback.
Keep in touch!
Sincerely,
Ninette Rivero

Healthy habits help stop the spread of flu!
Until last month, Kitsap County had seen very minimal influenza activity. However, preliminary data now show that Kitsap County is seeing an increase in influenza.
Get vaccinated, it is not too late! Cover your cough! Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your upper sleeve, NOT your bare hand. Be sure to throw the tissue away.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water is not available, use alcohol based hand gel or disposable wipes.
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home, like countertops and doorknobs.
Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Call your doctor or nurse if you have a fever or cough that won’t go away.
Stay home and away from other people when you or your children are sick.
When someone becomes ill, they should drink plenty of fluids, take fever-reducing medication (avoid aspirin in children), and call their health care provider if symptoms become worse.
People should seek immediate medical care if the following signs of serious illness are present: For Children: · Fast breathing or trouble breathing · Bluish skin color · Not drinking enough fluids · Not waking up or not interacting · Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held · Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough · Fever with a rash For Adults: • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen • Sudden dizziness • Confusion • Severe or persistent vomiting
TEAM is a unique learning community accepting
applications for children in grades 1-5. We offer
multiage learning and meaningful, rigorous oppor-
tunities within the CKSD curriculum framework.
Students are guided to challenge themselves as
learners and be accountable for their own choices.
Family commitment and involvement are a re-
quirement for acceptance into the program.

On January 26 and 27, the American Red
Cross came to our school to teach
students about Basic First Aid. This took
place during PE class. Students received
a practice first aid kit from the
American Red Cross to take home with
them after the lesson.
A note
from Mr.
Thoemke
We are continuing to slosh
through the rains to Silver
Ridge for checkout time.
We have had a total of 825
checkouts in January with
Third Grade taking the lead
with 211 checkouts. Great reading Third Grade! Thank you to those who sup-
ported the Barnes and Nobel
Book Fair. The library is very
appreciative of being able to
purchase and add to our col-
lection.
Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Weber are
co-Google Guides! This means
their classroom receives their
own cart which stays in their
room. The teachers will re-
ceive more training on apps and
features of the Google Class-
room and the students are ben-
eficiaries of new Chromebooks!
If you come down our halls, you
will see reading posters identi-
fying the nominees for differ-
ent categories. Students need
to read a minimum of 2 books
to be able to vote. Voting will
happen the week before
Spring Break. Since February is
Reading Olympics Month, now
would be a great time to encour-
age your students to checkout
some great books!
We would like to thank you and
the PTA for your gracious dona-
tions to our library through the
Barnes and Noble Book Fair.
Miss Mimi and I will be excited
to add more exciting books to
Silverdale’s collection!Thanks to
all who are supporting our
school levies!
Motivation is the key to any-
thing we do in life. The moti-
vated individual always
seems to have that extra en-
ergy necessary to stay on a
task that others have given up
along the way. Music class
offers your child the chance to
develop this habit, and your
support in this endeavor is
vital to his or her success.
It is easy for a student to get
discouraged and want to
avoid attempting new musical
skills. With your guidance and
encouraging words, the goals
of our class will be achieved.
You play an integral role in
the nurturing of your young
musician.
There are no shortcuts in the
development of young stu-
dents. Dedication and com-
mitment are the foundation
blocks to learning music.
Please look for every oppor-
tunity to compliment your
children as they explore their
musical talents. They are less
likely to become discouraged
if you continue to reward
them for their hard work and
curiosity. Your encourage-
ment is absolutely necessary.
The chance to perform
things learned in music class
for other supportive family
members can be an exciting
experience for a child. Every-
one loves the attention of an
appreciative audience. When
it is initiated in a way that
avoids embarrassment, per-
forming gives a child an even
greater desire to improve
musical skills and remain
motivated in music class.
This is a crucial time in your
child’s personal, academic
and musical growth. Encour-
agement is the key ingredient
in keeping your child motivat-
ed, and ultimately, to help
your child be a success.
Musically Yours,
Leah Riggs

Grade Level Music Studies
Grades k-2:
The primary classes have been
developing their ability to keep a
steady beat, and learn basic
rhythmic patterns. We have done
this using many different songs,
and movement activities. 1st and
2nd grade have been working on
songs that honor the work of
people like Dr. Martin Luther King
Junior.
Grade 3:
Third graders are continuing their
study of world music. In the com-
ing weeks we will be learning
about activities that will be in
“Work Stations”. These stations
will re-enforce music knowledge
and skills that we have learned in
class.
Grade 4:
Students in 4th grade will be
starting to play the recorder. A
note will be coming home in the
next week to give families infor-
mation about what is involved
when learning to play the record-
er. Once we have started, stu-
dents should attempt to practice
10-15 minutes 3-5 nights a week.
Grades 5 and 6:
Fifth and Sixth graders have start-
ed back up on the Ukulele in
class. We have learned many new
chords, and learned to read
TABS. Our next Composer of the
Month will be Johann Sebastian
Bach.

2016 READING OLYMPICS SILVERDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
February is Reading Olympics month at Silverdale Elementary. The purpose of Reading Olympics is to en-
courage children to choose reading as a leisure activity. Students may work toward a Bronze, Silver, or
Gold medal by reading or being read to for the required amount of time:
BRONZE SILVER GOLD 480 minutes or average 840 minutes or average 1200 minutes or average
120 minutes per week. 210 minutes per week. 300 minutes per week.
Students may earn minutes by:
Reading to themselves.
Reading aloud to others.
Listening to a story read aloud by another family member.
You can help your child by setting aside a time each evening for reading. We would encourage you to read
a book yourself or have your child read aloud to you or the whole family. This will encourage your child’s
participation. If you or another family member reads aloud to more than one child at a time, each child may
record those minutes.
You will find a calendar attached to this information sheet that can be used to keep track of time spent read-
ing. Four colored slips are attached that will be used to report your child’s weekly progress. Please report
all time in minutes.
Thank you for your part in helping your child become a successful reader. If you have any questions, please
contact Rachel Oathout at 662-9415.
