Airport Arrival InformationAdvise us of your arrival time:

All new students travelling to Sydney need to complete the Airport Arrival Information form online at:

http://fmweb01.ucc.usyd.edu.au/issu/arrivals

showing your date and time of arrival.

The Airport Reception Programme will operate 7 days a week from 6am to 12noon

and from 5pm to 11pm.

(These details will be confirmed by email when we acknowledge the receipt of your Airport Arrival Form). If we have this information, we can ensure that the Airport Arrivals Reception Desk will be staffed at the time of your arrival.

The Airport Arrivals Reception Desk

A consortium of universities of the State of New South Wales provide an Airport Arrivals Reception Desk to welcome new arrivals at the Sydney International Airport Terminal.

The Airport Arrivals Reception Desk is located next to the Tourism New South Wales Visitor Centre and the Airport Information Desk, in the corridor between Arrivals Gates A and B, and C and D (see map below). Upon arrival, you will be given a welcome package at the Desk. Please note that this programme does not include transport to your accommodation.

You will NOT be individually met by University personnel at the airport.

What do I do on my arrival at the Airport?

When you report to the Desk you will be given a welcome package which contains the contact details of all temporary accommodation, advice on local transport and a map of the University. If you arrive outside the opening hours of the Meet and Greet Desk, the general Tourist and Information Desk will be happy to assist you.

How do I get from the Airport to the University?

There are several ways you can get from the airport to your accommodation.

1. Taxi are available at the International Terminal. The cost of a taxi from the airport to the University’s Cumberland Campus is approximately $50.00

2. Limousine / Car Hire You can contact Astra Car Hire directly on (612) 9693 5309, or go to www.sydneyairport.com.au and click on terminal services / transportation.

Quarantine MattersFrom the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Website:

“Important information for international students

Enrolment…accommodation…passport…visa…health insurance…what to pack…???

These are just some of the things you will need to think about when preparing to come to Australia to study - quarantine laws, regulations and requirements are another. You need to be aware of what you cannot bring into Australia with you and therefore what you should not pack.

Either as a traveller to Australia or as a recipient of mail and parcels from friends and family back home, sooner or later you will come into contact with quarantine issues.

Each year Quarantine officers intercept more than 130,000 items at airports, mail handling centres and seaports. AQIS officers are particularly concerned about the number of parcels addressed to overseas students studying in Australia containing banned items, particularly food. These well-intentioned gifts could carry exotic pests and diseases which would put at risk the very things that make Australia so appealing as a destination – our environment, native plants and animals, agricultural industries and our great way of life.

It is therefore important that you are aware of what you cannot bring into Australia when you arrive at the airport. It is also important that your family and friends at home know what they cannot send to you through the mail. People who deliberately break Australian quarantine regulations could be fined or taken to court.

And remember, many of the food items you may want to bring into Australia or have sent to you through the mail are readily available in Australian shops.

What can’t I take into Australia? You must declare for inspection all food, plant material and animal products on arrival in Australia to ensure they are free of pests and diseases.

Some products may require treatment to make them safe.

Other items that pose pest and disease risks will be seized and destroyed by AQIS. You can dispose of high-risk items in quarantine bins in the airport terminal.

If you’re not sure, ask a Quarantine officer.

You will not be penalised if goods are declared.”

Getting to Cumberland CampusThe Faculty of Health Sciences is located on Cumberland Campus, Lidcombe which is more than 17 kilometres west of the city and the main campus at Camperdown.

To get to our campus from the airport you will need to either:

1. Catch a taxi:Specify that you want the Cumberland Campus on East St, Lidcombe. The best route for the taxi to take is the motorway (M5) as it is the fastest and most direct route here. The taxi fare should be around $Aus 50 – 60. Pay the fare on the meter plus GST, but there is no need to tip the driver.

2. Catch a train:Catch a train from the airport (marked as the green line on the train route map) to central Railway Station and transfer to a local train to Lidcombe (the purple line). From Lidcombe Station, catch a taxi or a bus down East St to gate 2 of the University Campus. (See map). This option would cost about $20. A taxi from Lidcombe station should cost only about $5 - $7.

It takes approximately 20-30 minutes to walk to campus from the station. A taxi ride is about three minutes so should cost no more than about $5-$6

Bus service from Lidcombe station:915 - Lidcombe station to TAFE/ University (For the period of 02/01/2007 – 02/03/2007)(915 buses travel along East Street and terminate at the campus bus stop just inside Gate 2, near the Administration Building, then return to Lidcombe Station)Operates every 15 minutes between:7.15am – 9.15am and 3.30am – 5.15pm

During semester time 915 operates between 7.15am and 6pm on weekdays.Buses run every 7 minutes during peak morning and afternoon periods during lecture weeks.

Finding permanent accommodationISSU cannot find and rent permanent accommodation for you but the International Student Counsellor on Cumberland Campus will be available to assist you during the Study Preparation Program with information related to finding permanent. Also the Housing Officer, located at Camperdown Campus will be available to help you in your search after you arrive in Sydney, up until the beginning of semester.

Housing Information Sessions are held daily at Camperdown Campus. See http://www.usyd.edu.au/stuserv/documents/issu/Things_to_do_5%201.pdf

If you arrive after the first week of semester, the University Accommodation Service will help you find permanent accommodation.

It will take you from two to four weeks to find permanent off-campus accommodation. You will need to spend time visiting places for rent, inspecting them and deciding what suits you. Try to arrive as early as possible before the Orientation Program and before the start of lectures so that you are settled into accommodation before studies begin.

Estimates of Rental Costs for Accommodation In Sydney

Boarding houses range from fairly large commercial properties to average sized houses run by private citizens. Full board (which includes meals), room with use of facilities, or room only are available. Cost of utilities included. Excludes phone call costs. You can expect to pay about $120 - $180 per week for a single or shared room in a boarding house. Apartments/flats/shared houses: costs will vary according to the location. Inner city living and beach-side is the most expensive. Students usually share costs by living together in a house, each with a private bedroom and sharing common facilities such as kitchen, bathrooms, living space. 1 bedroom$170 - $220+, 2 bedroom $200- $350, House 2/3 bedrooms $300 - $400+

Rental Bond: Whatever style of rental accommodation you choose, you will be required to pay a security bond of 4 weeks rent, as well as pay for rent 2 – 4 weeks in advance.

Cost of Utilities: Please take account of the extra cost of the use of electricity, the telephone and gas on top of your rent. Most houses will already have one phone line installed which is only a matter of reconnection for a fee. Approximate initial cost of connecting these basics:Connection of Gas $120, Connection of Electricity $120, Connection of Telephone $50 (If you want more lines to accommodate modems, a new connection fee will apply)

Cost for Full Board Accommodation/Homestay:

Some students select full board accommodation. Full board consists of a single room in a private home where the householder provides meals for you, and you share the life of the family. This is a good way for international students to improve their English and learn about Australian culture. If five weeks notice is provided a "home stay" with an Australian family can be organised by Insearch at Sydney University’s Camperdown Campus or various private organisations. (See list below). The cost on average for accommodation and three meals a day is $180.00 per week.

House-sitting: There exists some possibility of low-cost or even cost-free short –term accommodation in return for Services. Some home owners who are going away on leave, sometimes for up to 6 months, are concerned that their pets should be looked after and their gardens cared for while they are away. In order to minimise the risk of burglary of an obviously unattended house, these people are turning to taking on house-sitters who will provide those services while staying essentially rent-free (but paying a pro-rata for utilities such as phones etc). This kind of an arrangement is based on a clear undertaking of responsibility towards the owners’ property and beloved animals. May suit couples/families. Previous experience/verifiable references are essential. (See list below).

Families of International StudentsAccompanying Partners ProgramThe International Student Support Unit (ISSU) provides support and services to the partners of international students at the University of Sydney. This includes regular social meetings and activities run from the Camperdown Campus.

School fees for dependant childrenIf you are bringing school aged (5yrs-18yrs) children with you to Sydney, please note that school fees for attending government schools will apply. In 2006 these were between $4,500 and $5,500 per annum. Exemptions may apply to some scholarship holders. Note also that while immunization is not a prerequisite for enrolment at school or preschool/day care, all children attending schools are required to provide evidence of their current immunization status. For further information please refer to www.schools.nsw.edu.au . The new school year begins in Term I, Monday 29 January 2007. There are four school terms.

ChildcareThere is a child care centre (Ngallia) for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years on the campus. The hours of operation are from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm 5 days a week. Cost of child care is high in Australia. Fees for the services on Cumberland campus range between A$52.00 and A$60.00 per day. Consult the website www.sdn.org.au/locations/lidcombe Places are limited and you are advised to book as soon as possible. Email inquiries to: [email protected] phone: 61-2-9749 7575. Long day care centres are aimed at children aged between 8weeks and 5 years or school age. ($40 – $70 per day per child)OOSH: Out Of School Hours centres are usually associated with the school your child goes to and caters to the needs of working parents who need to drop their children to school earlier than school hours, (as early as 7.30 am) and pick them up as late as 6pm. These are on a “fee for service” basis and will usually require payment for a term in advance. Contracted care: In your home, or in the homes of others, costs $5.00 an hour

Internet access and IT informationThe ICT Computer Access Labs provide students and staff members of the University of Sydney with access to computers. These labs give students and staff access to printing, scanning, internet access, word processing, and expert staff assistance. Cumberland’s Computer Access Lab is located in B Block. After enrolment you will receive your “Unikey” and access to your own My Uni account. Orientation will include information on using these services. The non-semester opening times are listed below:

Mon-Fri 7.30am-6.00pm — Supervisor on Duty 10:00am-5:00pm

A note about technologyNew modern state of the art Computers are in place in all labs on Cumberland Campus. One major difference however, will be that there will be NO FLOPPY DISC DRIVES or CD Burners, available on the machines. We recommend to students that they investigate purchasing the more modern storage media, known as a USB Flash Memory Stick (or thumb drive). These can be purchased in various sizes, and are much more reliable and safe than floppy discs. Please feel free to talk to Computer lab staff who can best advise you when you arrive on Campus.

Clinical PlacementsDuring your course at the Faculty of Health Science you may be required to complete clinical training in the NSW hospital system.
