Happy Chanukah and happy new year 2020, dear friends. As we step into an unknown future in our congregation, in our country, and in the world, we are pondering the lessons of this season. In this time when we feel the presence of the darkness in the short days and the hard times, we find ourselves grateful for the teaching that we can trust deeply that the light is there for us – that we carry it in a well of abundance that we can tap into every day. Kitah Gan/Alef id /t v,hf (K/grade 1) continues to work their way through the alef-bet, and built and painted chanukiyot. They love to spin like dreidels!Kitah Bet/Gimel d/c v,hf (grades 2/3) explored the stories of Noah’s ark, the Tower of Babel, and the Maccabees. What does it mean for a story to be “true”? What is a midrash?Kitah Daled / s v,hf (grade 4) wondered what it means to have a moral compass. How do the10 commandments and other mitzvot guide us?Kitah Hey v,hf (grades 5) made their own mezuzot, including words that they find important to keep in their hearts and on their doorposts.Kitah Vav/Zayin z/u v,hf ((grade 6/7) led Shabbat services with Cantor Abbe Lyons, with a wonderful dvar Torah skit, including some Very Important Camels. They wrestled, figuratively within the text, and literally with each other, to try to understand how Jacob wrestled with an angel. If you see a vav or zayin student, ask them who is the champion of JewMo Wrestling, or what it means to be a Jewnicorn! They also sang and entertained residents at Longview.

In November, we welcomed special guests for Ha’Asharah vragv (enrichment): Esty Schachter read to us from her book Pickled Watermelon. Rabbi Tziona taught us about the Jewish Ethiopian holiday of Sigd, and then learned Ethiopian dances from Lwam, Teddy, Bethlehem, and Elshaday, students from the Cornell Ethiopian & Eritirean Association. Tobi Feldman and Ahn had us sniffing scents and oils mentioned in the Torah. We didn’t know the Torah was so filled with fragrance!Photos of all these can be found on our Facebook page!In December, Rabbi Brian led a farbrengen (gathering) with singing and Torah study. For Chanukah, Michael Margolin helped us create and exciting and improvisational play involving all classes and students in different aspects of the Chanukah story.

We were pleased to see both new and familiar faces at Havdallah under the Stars at the 4H Acres Camp, hosted along with Temple Beth-El, IAUJC, and PJ Our Way. If you are interested in signing up for PJ Our Way (free Jewish books for kids 8-12) see <www.pjourway.com> If you would like information about Jewish summer camps, ask Naomi!

We are looking forward to Jewish Stories Around the World, on January 12, when we will join with the Religious School students at Temple Beth-El (corner of Tioga and Court Street). We’ll spend the morning with stories of Jewish life around the world, hearing the music of the Abuyadaya in Uganda, tasting couscous from Morocco, playing futbal from Argentina, and more!

This semester we’ll be regularly adding suehr Rikud (dance) Israeli folk dance to our schedule: Mayim Mayim, Tzadik Katamar, Yesh Lanu Tayish, and others. We’ll have a few guests for Ha’Asharah vragv (enrichment), celebrate Tu B’shvat, Purim, and Pesach, and sing and learn with musician Rick Recht on March 8!

TORAH ON TAP Thursday, February 6 5:30-7 pm at Liquid State Brewery, 620 W. Green Street, Ithaca

Like beer and cider? Like discussing deep topics or schmoozing (instead of chatting?) with interesting people over beer and cider?

We are holding our first ‘Torah on Tap,” a fun evening of connecting with other TvO adults, exploring topics to discuss, and if we have time, delving into that week’s parasha or other Jewish topics that might present themselves the night. We will have light snacks, and Liquid State has a variety of delicious beverages. You can also bring your own food in to enjoy if you are looking for something more hearty.

This is a part of a Welcoming Committee/Jewish Education Committee initiative to offer new ways for adults to connect, both in and out of temple.

You can RSVP to [email protected] so we know who to expect, but it’s not required and if you just show up, that’s great!

Dinner & a Movie Dinner at 6:30, Films at 7 pm

Join us for a veggie/dairy dish to pass dinner, followed by some great films: January 18: TikkunAn ultra-orthodox scholar is revived after dying for 40 minutes. After coming back to life, he

suddenly feels a strange awakening in his body and suspects that God is testing him. February 8: 93QueenSet in the Hasidic enclave of Borough Park, Brooklyn, 93QUEEN follows a group of tenacious

Hasidic women who are smashing the patriarchy in their community by creating the first all-female volunteer ambulance corps in New York City.

March 21: Seder-MasochismLoosely following a traditional Passover Seder, events from the Book of Exodus are retold by

Moses, Aharon, the Angel of Death, Jesus, and the director’s own father. But there’s another side to this story: that of the Goddess, humankind’s original deity. Seder-Masochism resurrects the Great Mother in a tragic struggle against the forces of Patriarchy. (Animated)

Jewish Education Committee

Religious School had a great start to this year, welcoming Michael Margolin as the new teacher for the daled class.

We had a good turnout for the High Holidays, and both the service and childcare went well in the new spaces at the First Congregational Church.

We have had some fun and educational guests on Sundays, including the Ethiopian Student association which had everyone up and dancing, Esty Schachter (children’s book author and former TvO member), and Tobi Feldman, who presented biblical oils. We ended with a great Hanukkah party and skit. We start 2020 off with a joint program with Temple Beth-El.

Teens v’Or went apple picking and make gingerbread Hanukkah houses. They are looking at a movie night and sleepover, and possibly tubing this winter.

The Adult Hebrew class is taking a break, but we have been talking with other committees about other events, like Dinner and a Movie, to connect and engage adult members. Along with Torah on Tap (mentioned elsewhere) we are looking for other ideas, and people who would like to spearhead (with a LOT of assistance, I promise). Contact any member of the JE committee with ideas.

Bereavement Support Group

The Bereavement Support Group of Congregation Tikkun v’Or formed in 2013 with the kavana (intention) of assisting Congregation members and others when they are anticipating the death of a loved one or following a death. Our kavana is to honor the spirit and traditions of Judaism, but also suggest ways to adapt traditional practices for modern times and for our multicultural community. In each TvO newsletter we include a column about some aspect of bereavement. This issue, we explain K’riah.

K’riah: Tearing the ClothingOne of the unique customs during a Jewish funeral is the tradition of K’riah, tearing of the

cloth. In modern times, this tradition involves mourners wearing a small black ribbon that they tear immediately before the funeral (although sometimes after the funeral, or at the grave, or upon learning a loved one has died). Some mourners choose to tear a garment, which is the more traditional act, such as a tie or scarf—or even the lapel of a sport coat or blouse.

K’riah is one of the oldest mourning rituals we have, dating back to Biblical days. In the Bible, when Jacob believes that Joseph has been killed, Jacob tears his clothes. King David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them upon hearing of the death of Saul and Jonathan.

The reasoning behind the ritual is that death rips the very fabric of life. Tearing a garment enacts the feeling that death has torn one’s world apart, broken one’s heart.

The tradition is to wear the ribbon on the left (close to the heart) for parents and on the right for all others. After we tear the ribbon, we recite the blessing: “Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheynu melech ho-olam, dayan ha-emet. At this moment of grief, as we confront the truth of impermanence, we bless Havaya/Being, our God, Source of all life, from birth to death and beyond.”

The torn ribbon or garment is traditionally worn through the shiva period, and sometimes people continue to wear it for a full 30 days (sheloshim). For some, wearing the torn ribbon through sheloshim, as they get back to normal life, is a solace, and they welcome having an outward symbol that they are in mourning.

“From the moment I first affixed it to my black dress at the funeral, I thanked Judaism for bestowing upon me a visual representation of my loss,” writes Nancy Kalikow Maxwell in the Jewish Forward. “Especially after returning to work, the ribbon helped me cope. Spotting the ribbon in my reflection or untangling it from my necklace reminded me throughout the day that, though I had resumed my normal routine, I was still an official mourner. Those dark circles under my eyes were to be expected. Being curt with my assistants was understandable. Unlike other cultures that encourage a mourner to ‘get over it,’ Jewish ancestors knew it took at least a month to begin confronting such a loss.”

A special thanks to Rabbi Brian for the meaningful translation of the blessing.

More information about the Bereavement Support Group can be found on the Tikkun v’Or website under the “end of life” tab. Email us at: [email protected].

December 2019

The IAUJC board just held its campaign phon-a-thon on December 8th. Many thanks go to the generous donors who answered our calls and are sending us contributions to support our various programs. This year is a transition for us, as we have decided to make our fiscal year correlate with the calendar year. If you have not yet submitted your gift, please be aware that our present campaign will end on December 31st. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. Gifts can be made online or mailed to our P.O. Box. One of our activities in Ithaca is the commemoration of the Holocaust. We hold a Yom HaShoah event every spring. This year, the event will take place on April 20, 2020. In addition, an event is being planned for February 2, 2020, in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. When it is Hard to be Human: Lessons from the Rescuers in the Holocaust, will be a panel discussion followed by an audience question and answer interaction featuring authors Eva Fogelman and Roald Hoffmann, and moderated by author Dan Schwarz at Ithaca College’s James J. Whalen Center for Music | Presser Rehearsal Room. More information on the event will be forthcoming. This event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing. When Roald Hoffmann was 5, his family was rescued by Mykola and Maria Dyuk who risked their lives to save them. Roald is the author of ‘Something That Belongs to You’, an autobiographical drama. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. Eva Fogelman studied with Stanley Milgram, author of ‘Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View’ (1974). In 1973, she asked him a question he could not answer. She wanted to know why a small minority of people in his study disobeyed authority. Eva began an almost twenty year study of the rescuers of the Jews that led to her book, ‘Conscience and Courage’ (1994). She interviewed and collected the stories of rescuers, survivors and their children. On this journey, she began to work as a psychotherapist with groups and individual children of Holocaust survivors. Dan Schwarz, author of ‘Imagining the Holocaust’ (1999) will moderate a discussion between Eva and Roald about the Rescuers, or as Israel’s Yad Vashem calls them, the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’. This event is sponsored by The Ithaca Area United Jewish Community, with additional support from the Ithaca College Hillel, The Ithaca Descendants of Holocaust Survivors and the Southern Tier Interfaith Community. We hope you will join us on February 2nd.
