April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Prevent Child Abuse More than 28,000 children in Kentucky were found to be abused, neglected
or in need of further services during calendar year 2016. Clearly this fact in-
dicates the need for prevention services in our state. Nationally, April is ob-
served as Child Abuse Prevention Month which is an opportunity for every-
one to come together to educate the state of effective strategies to prevent
child abuse. A few specific ways to be involved in child abuse prevention
during April and throughout the year include:
Plan and implement a local child abuse prevention month event and pin-
wheel planting. Find resources to get started.
Participate in a Dress Down Day for Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky.
On April 6, participate in National Wear Blue Day for Child Abuse Pre-
vention.
Use social media to share prevention information. Follow Prevent Child
Abuse Kentucky and share their post.
Educate yourself and others about child abuse and its prevention.
Know the warning signs of abuse and report it.
Be a nurturing parent to your own children, and make children a priority
in your community.
Reach out to your neighbors; isolation is often a contributing factor to
child abuse.
Reference: Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky (PCAK) focuses on the pre-
vention of child abuse and neglect across the state through public awareness,
community education, parenting classes, training and technical assistance
towards implementing effective evidence-based strategies across the Com-
monwealth. To learn more about child abuse prevention, visit
www.pcaky.org.

Celebrate Siblings
April 10 is sibling day—a day to celebrate the strong
relationships and bond between brothers and sisters.
And while the number of contacts between siblings
may slightly decrease during the adulthood years, in
later life, it is more likely to increase. With a shared
past and many years of experience, older adult sib-
lings are likely to feel close. They share values, goals
and knowledge based on generational commonalities
and historical context. Siblings in older adulthood
are important because they provide a sense of safety
and security. They provide advice, encouragement,
and moral and emotional support. They can also of-
fer instrumental support such as helping with house-
hold tasks or transportation if they are close in prox-
imity. Reference: Sibling relationships: How impor tant are siblings for

KY Museum Quilt Exhibit
Looking for an outing for your homemaker
clubs? The Kentucky Museum at Western
Kentucky University in Bowling Green
recently opened a new quilt exhibit,
“Kaleidoscope: Kentucky Museum
Quilts.” This exhibit showcases thirty rarely
seen or previously unseen quilts from the
Kentucky Museum collection. Made in twenty
-eight different patterns, the textiles in this
exhibit range in age from the 1820s through
the 1970s. While many of them illustrate high
levels of artistry, others are less accomplished
in their execution. All were crafted with
loving hands. Regardless of the skill level
involved, these textiles illustrate many
techniques and patterns represented in the
museum collection and are part of the rich
cultural tradition of quilt making in Kentucky
that extends back more than 200 years. One of
the highlights of the exhibition is the first
public display in Bowling Green of the circa
1880 Kentucky Sun Quilt, which was the
symbol of the Kentucky Quilt Project's
landmark exhibit and book, “Kentucky Quilts:
1800-1900.”
The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday
from 9 am to 4 pm and runs through December
18, 2018. The Kentucky Museum closes for
some university holidays. Group rates are
available, and your paid admission grants
visitors access to all Kentucky Museum
exhibits, including the “2018 US Bank:
Celebration of the Arts” exhibit which is on
view from March 3 through April 7. To learn
more about “Kaleidoscope” and the other
exhibits currently on view at the Kentucky
Museum, go to wku.edu/kentuckymuseum/ or
call 270-745-2592.
