Ethnic Minority CultureRamadan 2013 伊斯蘭教曆九月(齋戒月)Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It’s a sacred month of fasting for Muslims around the world. This year’s Ramadan was from 8 July 2013 to 8 Aug 2013. Estimates of the period are based on expected visibility of the hilal (new moon).

The spectacular sight of these women in their blue and white dresses is usually featured in the media at this time. Muslim men these days will attend special services in Hong Kong’s mosques, especially at the main mosque in Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a strict fast and participate in activities such as charitable giving and peace making. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims observe a joyous celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking)

HOME Centre celebrated Eid, the end of the month of Ramadan, with our EM friends. Eid is the day of celebration to Muslims around the world. The celebration program was held in HOME Centre (YTM) on 13 Aug 2013 and HOME Centre (SSP) on 11 Aug 2013. Members appreciated the arrangement.

All government and subsidized schools with more than 10 non-Chinese-speaking pupils will get an additional subsidy this school year to provide them with better support. The move adds 70 schools to the 31 “designated schools”

now covered by the subsidy, which ranges from HK$300,000 to HK$600,000 a year. All schools receiving the subsidy have to adopt a set of guidelines to develop Chinese teaching strategies and set learning targets for their non-Chinese speaking pupils. For detailed information, please visit Education Bureau website (www.edb.gov.hk).

In the past months, HOME Centre has been actively cooperating with schools to provide supportive service to EM students and parents. For any enquiries, please feel free to contact us at 3610 4418.
