The Fundamentals Of Expository Preaching
1. Is there a Scriptural Mandate to Preach?
OT: Isaiah 6:8-13; Ezekiel 33:7-9 cf. Ac. 20:25-27 NT: Jesus - Mt. 4:17f.; Mt. 10:7, 11:1
Early Church Ac. 5:42; 10:42. Epistles: Ro. 10:15; Eph. 4:11-16; 2 Tim 4:2
Introduction
The Fundamentals Of Expository Preaching
2. What is the Place of the Scripture in Preaching?
John Albert Bengel (1687-1752)
Scripture is the foundation of the Church: the Church is theguardian of Scripture. When the Church is in strong health, the lightof Scripture shine bright; when the Church is sick, Scripture iscorroded by neglect; and thus it happens, that the outward form ofScripture and that of the Church, usually seem to exhibitsimultaneously either health or else sickness; and as a rule the wayin which Scripture is being treated is in exact correspondence withthe condition of the Church.

3. What is Expository Preaching?
We will call upon Haddon W. Robinson, a distinguished homileticianand noted expository preacher to give us a basic definition of expositorypreaching:
Expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, andliterary study of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit firstapplies to the personality and experience of the preacher, thenthrough him to his hearers. 4. What happens when Expository Preaching is missing in the Church?
Walter C. Kaiser Jr.
It is no secret that Christ Church is not at all in good health in manyplaces of the world. She has been languishing because she has beenfed, as the current line has it, junk food; all kinds of artificialpreservatives and all sorts of unnatural substitutes have been servedup to her.a worldwide spiritual famine resulting from the absence ofany genuine publication of the Word of God (Amos 8:11) continues torun wild and almost unabated in most quarters of the Church.

5. What is the Historical Significance of Expository Preaching?
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones:
What is it that always heralds the dawn of a Reformation or a Revival? It isrenewed preaching. A revival of true preaching has always heraldedthese great movement in the history of the Church. And, of course, whenthe Reformation and Revival come they have always led to great andnotable periods of the greatest preaching that the Church has ever known. As that is true in the beginning as described by the book of Acts, it wasalso after the Protestant Reformation. Luther, Calvin, Knox, Latimer, Ridley all these men were great preachers. In the seventeenth century you hadexactly the same thing the great Puritan preachers and others. And in theeighteenth century, Jonathan Edwards, Whitefield, the Wesleys, Rowlandsand Harris were all great preachers. It was an era of great preaching.Whenever you get Reformation and Revival this is always and inevitably theresult. - Preaching and Preachersp. 24f

7. Is there a need for Expository Preaching in the 21 Century?
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones:
I would say without any hesitation that the most urgentneed in the Christian church today is true preaching, and asit is the greatest and most urgent need in the Church, it isobviously the greatest need of the world also.

8. What is Exegesis?
Since exegesis is the foundation for expository preaching let us citeJohn D. Grassmick. In Principles and Practice of Greek Exegesis hethrows considerable light on the meaning of exegesis, which hedefines as:
the skillful application of sound hermeneutical principles tothe biblical text in the original language with a view tounderstanding and declaring the authors intended meaning.

Three Tests of a Call(See: Lloyd-JonesPreaching & Preachersp.104f.)
Don Whitney:The Call of God to Preach the Gospel
a) Inward Conviction: Personal/internalDeep personal conviction that God has called you to devoteyourself to preaching the Gospel and shepherding Hisprecious people Word/conviction.
b) Church Confirmation: Public/externalThe congregation must prayerfully evaluate and affirm thecall, gifts (Eph. 4:11f.) and graces (1Tim 3:1ff.) of thebeliever who feels called to the ministry. As the body ofChrist, the church must confirm the gifts the head of thechurch has given to it.
The Fundamentals Of Expository Preaching
c) Personal Compulsion: No Choice!
This is NOT something you like but something you have nochoice but to do!
Spurgeon - warned those who sought his counsel not topreach if they could help it. "But," Spurgeon continued, "if hecannot help it, and he must preach or die, then he is theman." That sense of urgent commission is one of the centralmarks of an authentic call.
Those called by God to preach will be given a desire topreach as well as the gifts of preaching. Beyond this, theGod-called preacher will feel the same compulsion as thegreat Apostle, who said, "Woe to me if I do not preach thegospel!" (1 Co. 9:16) A. Mohler

Four Guidelines
1. Preach series from one Old Testament and one New Testament bookeach year.
2. Preach not less than six, nor more than twenty-four sermons in eachseries. Ponder this issue before accepting this guide-line. Can youraudience handle a year or more of sermons from one Bible book?
3. Give attention to the individuality of each sermon. Make each sermon inthe series a self-contained message not dependent on preceding orsubsequent sermons.
4. Think carefully about your approach in selecting texts. Choosedeliberately between the successive and selective approaches.
