Form measurement – what for?

important especially for the trouble-freeinteraction of several workpieces withcommon functions.

Measurements of form deviations tell us something about the quality of thefinished parts, allow us to draw con-clusions about the overall quality of theproduction process and thus help toreduce costs.

HOMMEL FORMLINE measuring instru-ments allow you to check the functionsof your components easily, quickly andeconomically. Form and position de-

viations are evaluated and displayedclearly by the TURBO FORM software.

Our form measurement instrumentsoffer the suitable solution from simpleroundness measurement right up toCNC-capable determination of allcommon form and position tolerances.

The form measurement systems withrotary table are particularly suitable formeasuring rotationally symmetrical parts.Systems with a rotating scanning headare used for workpieces which are heavyand not rotationally symmetrical.

Defined geometric properties

The shape of a part is based on themacrostructure (shape, position, dimen-sion) and the microstructure (roughnessand waviness) of the reference surface.Every workpiece is machined with amore or less strong deviation from theideal geometrical form.

The slightest deviation from the nominalform may already have a considerableinfluence on the functionability of acomponent. The form and position de-viations of all parts are therefore very

Compact and cost-effective roundness measuring systems

The compact form measurementsystems HOMMEL TESTER F1000 andF2000 have an air-bearing rotary table.The workpiece is aligned manually. The continuous measurement speedand the motorised vertical adjustmentaxis guarantee maximum flexibility andease of operation.

The HOMMEL TESTER F1000 is suitablefor form testing on rotationally sym-metrical workpieces. The air-bearingrotary table has a diameter of 150 mmand accommodates workpiecesweighing up to 25 kg. The compactdesign allows fast, flexible relocation ofthe instrument.

The HOMMEL TESTER F2000 differs from the HOMMEL TESTER F1000 in the larger rotary table which has adiameter of 250 mm and a loadingcapacity of up to 80 kg. The measuringinstrument is therefore suitable forlarge, heavy workpieces.An ergonomically designed table withintegrated vibration damping is availableas an option.

The HOMMEL TESTER F1003 and F2003are ideal for measuring precision partswhere the cylindrical form needs to bemeasured in addition to the roundness.

They both have a high-precision, verticalmeasurement axis with a measurementdistance of 350 mm (optional 550 mm)and motorised positioning of the hori-zontal axis. These form measurementsystems are therefore suitable for auto-mated measuring runs.

Alignment of the workpiece is sup-ported by automatic help functions.These include alignment of the rotarytable and display of correction factors.

The probe is protected against collisionsand the design of the instrument allowsprobe movement past the centre of the table to measure parallelism andconicity without rotating the table.

The HOMMEL TESTER F1003 and theF2003 are available as desktop versionsas standard. On request they can also be installed in an ergonomicallydesigned table where they offer anideally adapted workstation.

The HOMMEL TESTER F2003 has the same principle structure as theHOMMEL TESTER F1003. The traverserange of the horizontal axis is largerwith 220 mm movement. The rotarytable has a diameter of 250 mm for accommodating workpieces up to 80 kg.

The optional manual probe tilt arm FS1simplifies the measurement process on complex workpieces. It can bemoved easily and quickly into the opti-mum operating position.

The traverse distance of the horizontal axis in the HOMMEL TESTER F1003is 170 mm. The air-bearing rotary table with manual workpiece alignment and a diameter of 150 mm is suitable for components up to 25 kg.

Exact evaluation of form and position tolerances

HOMMEL TESTER F1004 The horizontal traverse distance of the HOMMEL TESTERF1004 is 170 mm. The load capacity of the air-bearing rotarytable is 25 kg with a table diameter of 150 mm.

In connection with the optional motorised tilt and swivelmodule MDS, axial and radial measurements are performedfully automatically without the CNC run being interrupted.

The general version of the HOMMEL TESTER F2004 is identical to theHOMMEL TESTER F1004. However, it has a high load, air-bearing rotarytable with a diameter of 250 mm for automatic measuring runs on large, heavy workpieces up to a max. 80 kg. The measurement distance of the horizontal axis in this form measurement instrument is 220 mm.

Three motorised measurement axes allow CNC-controlledmeasuring cycles for measuring all common form andposition parameters. The vertical measurement length in boththe HOMMEL TESTER F1004 and the F2004 is a standard 350 mm and can also be supplied with 550 mm on request.The high degree of automation with a CNC programme

makes the instruments particularly suitable for using in seriesproduction.

The form measurement instruments can be integrated in anergonomically designed table as an alternative to the desktopversion.

The HOMMEL TESTER F4003 and F4004form measurement instruments offerfully automatic workpiece alignmentand minimum measurement times withmaximum operating comfort.

The measurement distance of themotorised vertical axis in these formmeasurement devices is 350 mm and isalso available with 550 mm on request.The 250 mm rotary table with air-bearing allows loading of workpieces up to 40 kg.The probe is collision-protected. Thesystems also allow traversing past thecentre of the table for measuringparallelism and conicity without rotatingthe table.

The HOMMEL TESTER F4003 isparticularly suitable for measuring thecylindrical form on complex workpieces.The traverse distance of the motorisedhorizontal axis is 220 mm.

The optional manual probe tilt arm FS1simplifies the measuring process oncomplex workpieces and moves theprobe arm quickly and comfortably tothe right operating position.

Motorised tilt and swivelmodule MDS

The HOMMEL TESTER F4004 leavesnothing to be desired: three motorisedmeasurement axes in combination withan automatic workpiece alignmentensure a fully automatic CNC measuringrun even for complex tasks.Unlike the HOMMEL TESTER F4003, the horizontal axis on this instrumentperforms a measurement function.

The optional motorised tilt and swivelmodule MDS allows fully automatic axial and radial measurements withoutinterrupting the CNC run. It has onemotorised axis each for tilting androtating the probe and thereforereaches measurement positions whereaccess would normally be difficult.

For high table load and large measurement volumes

HOMMEL TESTERFMS 4310 – FMS 5310

The HOMMEL TESTER FMS 4310 allowsboth automatic measurements andautomatic centring and levelling. Therotary table has a diameter of 310 mm,a load capacity up to 100 kg andautomatic workpiece alignment issupplied as a standard.

The special scanning function reducesthe alignment time considerably. This fast coarse alignment is achieved by“scanning” the workpiece.

The measurement distance of thevertical axis in the HOMMEL TESTERFMS 4310 is 350 mm (550 mm isavailable as an option), the measure-ment distance of the horizontal axis is150 mm.

The software offers numerous optionsfor workpiece-specific evaluation, e.g.for pistons.

The HOMMEL TESTER FMS 5310 meetsthe highest testing requirements withincremental length measuring systems.The horizontally adjustable Z axis makesit possible to measure workpieces withvery large measuring volumes withmaximum accuracy.The measurement distance of thevertical axis in this form measurementsystem is 500 mm (optional 600 mm). The measurement distance on thehorizontal axis is 250 mm.

The HOMMEL TESTER FMS 4310operates with three measurement axeswith which it can measure and calculateall common form and positiondeviations.

With the bidirectional scanning systemthe measuring instrument changes frominternal to external scanning withoutmanual intervention. It also has anautomatic probe tilt unit for measure-ments on workpieces which are higherthan the vertical axis.

The HOMMEL TESTER FMS 4210 isavailable for simpler applications. Theair-bearing rotary table has a diameterof 220 mm and manual workpiecealignment. Load capacity is 50 kg (notillustrated).

Both the Z and R axes have air-bearingsand are wear-free. The R axis is equippedwith an additional adjustment system so that larger diameters can be scannedbeyond the measurement distance.The bidirectional, inductive scanninghead enables automatic reversal of theprobing direction.

Crankshaft measurementThe crankshaft measuring arm is usedfor axial and radial measurements onmain and pin bearings without probechanges. It is available either withautomatically or manually rotatedprobe.

The HOMMEL TESTER FMS 8100 and FMS 8200 spindle measuring machinesare equipped with an air-bearing,automatically driven X-Y table with amaximum load capacity of 200 kg. All axes are measuring axes in thesesystems. The vertical axis in theHOMMEL TESTER FMS 8100 has ameasurement distance of 900 mm. Thisis 1300 mm in the HOMMEL TESTERFMS 8200.

Evaluation software with parameter-oriented user guidance

The graphical, function-oriented userinterface of the TURBO FORM evaluationsoftware guarantees you simple opera-tion even for complex measuring tasks.Starting with the simple definition of measurement positions and axisreferences, through the fully automaticalignment and measurement of theworkpieces right up to extensive profileanalysis and continuous documentationof the test results.

The graphical user interface can beconfigured flexibly and individually for every measuring programme. Allcommon form and position parametersare calculated with TURBO FORMaccording to current standards. Thetoolbar which can be operated with themouse or keyboard ensures maximumoperating comfort. The software is openfor an unlimited number of measuringprogrammes and measurementprotocols.

The user-friendly guidance through themeasurement is shown here clearlyusing the cylindrical form measurementas an example.

Test plan creation

Select the desired parameter by a mouse click. The wizard thenguides you simply and safely through the individual steps.

Automatic alignment

Alignment is semi-automatic or fully automatic(depending on the version of the form measur-ing instrument) and is optimally supported by the software. The aligned workpiece is measured at themeasurement positions defined in the test plan.

Detailed 3D representations of themeasurement such as flatness, simplifyevaluation of the measurement resultsas shown in the diagram.

Automatic measuring runs: CNC

A CNC run requires far less time than a manual measuring sequence andsupplies operator-independent,reproducible results. The automatic run leaves the operator free to performother tasks.CNC programmes are created by ateach-in process and can be changedstep by step afterwards – either as atotal measuring run or in individualsteps.

Fourier analysis

The Fourier analysis is a specialevaluation of radial measurementpositions. The measured profile isbroken down into its spectralcomponents and displayed graphically.A limit curve is defined here fortolerancing. Amplitudes which exceedthe curve are displayed in red.This makes recurrent, high-frequencyprofile segments recognisable. A typicalapplication is for example the detectionof chatter marks on the workpiece.

Evaluation of special measuring tasks: Software options

Diameter

The external diameter of a cylindricalpart is determined from a roundnessmeasurement. The workpiece diameter is calculatedfrom the arithmetic centre LSC of aroundness profile – relatively to apreviously measured setting master.

Variation in thickness

This software option can be used todefine the thickness variation of twoprofiles, e.g. suitable for measuringbrake disks.

Angular sector

The greatest roundness error isdetermined here in a defined anglesegment.

Export interface

Calculated characteristics can beexported in ASCII format and pro-cessed further with other softwareprogrammes, e.g. Excel.

qs-STAT® interface

Data can be transferred to the statisticspackage for process data analysis viathe qs-STAT® interface.

Laminar jump

This option is provided specially for evaluationson collectors. The interruptions on the collectorare extracted to calculate the laminar jump.

Other software options on request.

Twist evaluation

This hardware and software option allows you to measure the properties of sealsurfaces on shafts. Twist structures on seal surfaces can lead to undesirable flowsand thus to leaks.

Cone angle

The cone angle and the form variation of aconical surface are calculated from several polar and linear profiles with the evaluationprogramme. Tracking of the R and Z axes (scanning mode) enables cone anglemeasurement within wider ranges.

The choice of probe arm has a significant influence on the measurement result. The probe arm often has to be designed to suit a specific part. We will be glad to help you choose the suitable probe arm for your measuring task.

The carbon fibre probe arms are convincing in their excellent material properties and maximum operational flexibility. Hommelwerke offers a wide range of accessories for safe handling of complex workpieces. Accessories made specially for your measuring task are available in addition to the standard accessories.

Probe FT1

The individual lever probe FT1 is distinguished by an interchangeable, 180° swivellable probe arm with reversible probing direction, adjustable gauging force and a variable free stroke limit in both directions. Art. 231 410

Chucks

Precision chucks with three, six or eight hardened jaws guarantee that the workpiece lies firmly on the rotary table for every measurement. This is a particular advantage for workpieces with small diameters.

Tilt modules

Probe tilt arm FS1

The probe tilt arm FS1 simplifies measurements on complex workpieces. It can bemoved easily and quickly into the optimum operating position for every measuringtask. The double zenith setting on the tilt arm guarantees correct measurementsevery time.Art. 513 277

Motorised tilt and swivel module MDS

The motorised tilt and swivel module MDS allows fully automatic axial and radialmeasurements without interrupting the CNC run. It has one motorised axis eachfor tilting and rotating the probe and therefore reaches measurement positionsthat are normally difficult to access. This module is also suitable for automaticmeasurements on conical surfaces. The Autostop function has an intelligent,computer-aided approach with automatic detection of the probing direction. The tilt range is 90° and the swivel range 270°.Art. 513 253

Hommelwerke measuring systems aswell as single components are deliveredin perfect condition and completelyaligned and tested. All individual partscan easily be changed as a result with-out impairing the measuring accuracy.Due to wear the measuring uncertaintymay increase without being noticed.

In most cases the perfect function of themeasuring devices cannot be detecteddirectly. In general the calibration of thesystem has to be carried out with thehelp of a feedback standard.

Hommelwerke offers a wide range ofcalibration services:

Hommelwerke is a DKD calibration laboratory

One particularly important aspect is the continuous monitoring of ourproducts for optimum accuracy. In theDKD calibration laboratory (Germancalibration service) we calibrate yourstandards.If a standard proves impossible tocalibrate you can order new standardsfrom us. We issue a simpler in-housecalibration certificate or test certificatefor variables which are not accreditedand as a low-cost alternative to the DKD calibration certificate.

Calibration is done on our DKD measur-ing station in the climatised and vibra-tion-isolated measuring laboratory witha rotary spindle machine with a measur-ing Z axis. All common form parameterscan be determined.
