Dr. Arnold Fletcher was the University’s first vice president and played an instrumental roledeveloping and leading the institution's academic enterprise. Under his leadership, Thomas Edisondeveloped its first degree programs, appointed its first Academic Council, created its first examprograms and courses and became a pioneer in prior learning assessment. The Arnold FletcherAward recognizes Thomas Edison State University bachelor’s degree graduates for exceptionalachievement in online learning. Students must have earned at least 51 percent of their creditsthrough Thomas Edison State University’s online courses with a minimum of 10 courses taken andhave earned an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Graduates wearing the gold doublehonor cords are the Arnold Fletcher Award recipients.

Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor SocietyAlpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society was founded in 1945 to recognize adult students inhigher education who have achieved academic excellence while fulfilling the many responsibilitiesof family, work and community services. The Thomas Edison State University Lambda Tau Chapterwas established in 1996. For induction into this society students must have an overall ThomasEdison State University grade point average of 3.2 and have earned from Thomas Edison StateUniversity at least 24 graded credits of which 12 credits are in liberal arts/sciences. Student membersare selected only from the top 20 percent of the group of qualified students. Graduates wearing thegarnet and gold honor cords are the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor recipients.

Kappa Delta Pi International Honor SocietyKappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education, is an honor society recognizing theacademic achievements and professional accomplishments of educators worldwide. Kappa DeltaPi is one of the largest and most prestigious educational honor societies in the world. With morethan 500 active chapters, Kappa Delta Pi is dedicated to the ideals of fidelity to humanity, service,science and toil. As part of its goal, Kappa Delta Pi recognizes scholarship and enhances theprofessional development of its members. The Thomas Edison State University Alpha Zeta Epsilonchapter was established in 2010. Membership is open to students matriculated in either the HeavinSchool of Arts and Sciences Master of Arts in Educational Leadership program or the GraduateCertificate in Educational Leadership program, have completed 6 credits and have maintained agrade point average of 3.5 or higher. Graduates wearing the violet and jade honor cords are theKappa Delta Pi Honor recipients.

Order of the Sword and ShieldThe Order of the Sword and Shield was established in 2010 and is the first academic and professionalhonor society dedicated exclusively to the disciplines of homeland security, intelligence, emergencymanagement and protective security. The Thomas Edison State University Chapter was established in2015. Qualifying students in the John S. Watson School of Public Service and Continuing StudiesBachelor of Science degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management program and Masterof Science in Homeland Security degree program are eligible for this honor. Students must havecompleted 50 percent of the total number of credits required for the degree in an undergraduate orgraduate-level homeland security degree program. Students enrolled in the bachelor’s program musthave a grade point average of 3.25 or higher or be in the top 20th percentile of their class and studentsenrolled in the master’s program must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher or be in the top20th percentile of their class. Graduates wearing the gold and blue cords are the Order of the Swordand Shield recipients.

The Honor Society of NursingSigma Theta Tau InternationalThe Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International was founded in 1922. Its purposes areto recognize superior academic achievement and the development of leadership qualities; to fosterhigh professional standards; to encourage creative work; and to strengthen commitment to the idealsand purposes of the nursing profession. The Upsilon Rho Chapter at Thomas Edison State Universitywas chartered in 2008. Criteria for membership for undergraduate students are that the student musthave a Thomas Edison State University grade point average of at least 3.0 and be ranked in the top 35percent of their graduating class. Criteria for Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN Program students are thatthe student must have a Thomas Edison State University grade point average of at least 3.0 and beranked in the top 35 percent of the graduating class. Criteria for graduate students are that the studentmust have a Thomas Edison State University grade point average of at least 3.5, possess leadershipqualities and high professional standards, and have completed the required graduate curriculum.Graduates wearing the purple and white honor cords are the Honor Society of Nursing recipients.
