Other Things Dr. Cooper Dean Jamieson National Academy of Sciences Three Penn people are among the 60 scholars elected this year to the Nationalcademy of Sci- ences in recognition of their “distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.” Dr. William Labov is professor of linguistics and psychology and director of Linguistics Laboratory. Dr. Jerry P. Gollub, adjunct professor of physics, is also Kenan Professor of Physics at Haverford College. The third is Dr. Shinya Inoue, a longtime professor of biology who is now Distinguished Scientist at Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. Three Guggenheim Awards Three Penn faculty members are among the 146 Guggenheim Fellows for 1993,chosen for their "unusually distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for the future.”: Dr. Marina S. Brownlee, Class of 1963 College of Women Professor of Romance Languages, is the undergraduate chair of Spanish and her focus is Medieval Spanish vernacular poetry. Dr. Margaret Ann Mills, associate professor of folklore and folklife, is researching the life of an fghan woman verbal artist. Dr. Donald K. Swearer, adjunct professor of religion, is doing work on the sacred mountains of Thailand, Laos and Burma. pplications came from 2,989 scholars, sci- entists and artists in this 69th annual competition, according to Dr. Joel Conarroe, president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Fulbright to Sweden Dr. Patrick McGovern, a research specialist at the University Museum’s Applied Science Center for rchaeology, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to conduct research in archaeo- logical chemistry in Sweden. He will work at the University of Stockholm and at a Jordanian site kept by the University of Uppsala. WICI’s Sarah Award Dean Kathleen Hall Jamieson of the nnen- berg School for Communication won this year’s Sarah ward of the Philadelphia Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., citing among other achievements her highly praised books and her appearances as commentator with Bill Moyers during the 1992 presidential campaign. Elections Dr. Steven C. Batterman, professor of bioen- gineering at SES, has been chosen president- elect of the merican cademy of Forensic Sciences—the first engineer ever elected to head the prestigious organization in forensic science. Dr. Edward S. Cooper, professor of medicine, is the newly elected president of the merican Heart ssociation. member of the University since 1958, he is the first African-American to head the .H.. in its 69-year history. Dr. Phyllis Rackin, professor of English in General Honors, took office last month as president of the merican Shakespeare Society, which includes the Shakespearean scholars of Canada as well as the U.S. Dr. Arnold Thackray, the Joseph PriestleyTerm Professor of the History and Sociology of Sci- ence, has been elected treasurer of the merican Council of Learned Societies and a member of its executive committee and board of directors. Honorary Degrees GSFA’s Ian McHarg, professor emeritus of landscape architecture and regional planning, has received the honorary degree D. Litt. from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. He also received the Richard Neutra Medal at California Polytechnic. Dr. Anthony M. Santomero, Richard King Mellon Professor of Finance at the Wharton School, received an honorary doctorate from the Stockholm School of Economics last fall. A leading authority on financial institutions and banking reform, he was cited for his role in advising various government and academic institutions. Awards In Honor of... The Poets, Essayists and Novelists organi- zation has established the P.E.N./Nora Magid Award in honor of the late senior lecturer in English here, The $2500 award was set up “to bring attention to an editor whose intellectual discernment and wide range of interests recalls Magid” and the first recipient was Peter Stitt of the Gettysburg (College) Review. The Barristers’ Association of Philadelphia has created an award in honor of the Hon. Leon A. Higginbotham, Jr., adjunct professor of law and a Trustee of the University—and made him its first recipient. The Higginbotham Award is to be given to frican-mericans of national stature who embody his “professional excellence, scholarship and commitment to social justice” and will be given only when the organization identifies a person of his stature. Recognizing Invention Dr. Britton Chance, Eldridge Reeves Johnson Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Bio- physics, received the Board of City Trusts’ John Scott ward, endowed in the early 1800s by an Edinburgh pharmacist who reportedly admired Ben Franklin and wished to honor merican inventors—in Dr. Chance’s case, for his work in magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Dr. lan MacDiarmid, professor of chemis- try, received the Franklin Institute’s Francis J. Clamer Medal this year for his pioneering work in conductive polymers—plastics that conduct electricity—paving the way for revolutionary lightweight plastic batteries and numerous other potential breakthroughs in materials that light, clothe and power the nation and the world. Judge Higginbotham Nora Magid s the merican Philosophical Society celebrated its 250th anniversary, the changing of the guard was a Penn affair: the Hon. rlin M. dams of the Third Circuit Court of ppeals (an adjunct professor of law here as well as a Trustee of the University) took office as president to succeed Dr. Eliot Stellar, the University Professor Emeritus of Neurosciences and former Provost of Penn. Dr. Stellar joins Dr. Jonathan Rhoads of surgery (and a previous Provost) in a long line of Penn-related past presidents of the PS stretching back to Benjamin Frankin (who founded both) and including Caspar Wistar and Edgar Fahs Smith. Newly elected as Fellows of the PS are two renowned members of the Medical School: Dr. Emily Mudd, professor emerita of psychiatry whose pioneering studies in marriage and family life led to the formation of the Marriage Council of Philadelphia; and Dr. Peter Nowell, the Gaylord Harnwell Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Since assumingthedeanship,hehassteppeddownaschair of Penn’s classical studies department, a positionhehasheldsince1989. �specialistinRomanpoetry,Dr.Santiroccohas published extensively on Greek and Latinliteratureandthought.HeistheauthorofUnity and Design in Horace’s Odes(UniversityofNorthCarolinaPress,1986)andhaseditedacollectionofessays,latinitas: The Tradition and Teaching of latin(TexasTechPress,1987).Hehasalsoedited the American Philological Association’s monographseries,andiseditor-designateofthejournalclassical World.�dditionally,heisVicePresidentforProfessionalMattersofthe�mericanPhilological�ssociationandhasservedasdirec-torofseveralsummerseminarssponsoredbytheNationalEndowmentfortheHumanities. DrSantiroccoisaColumbiaalumnuswhotookhisPh.D.thereafterearninghisM.�.fromCambridgeUniversity.BeforejoiningPenn,hetaughtatColumbia,Pittsburgh,andEmorywherehewasclassicsdepartmentchairfrom1987to1989.

JohnClaytonKohl,well-knowneducator,publicservantandtransportationengineer,diedinIrving,Texasonthe18thofMarchattheageof84.HewasEmeritusProfessorofCivilEngineeringsincehisretirementfromtheUniversityofPennsylvaniain1976. ProfessorKohlwasanativeofNewYorkCity.HeattendedOberlinCollegeandUniversityofMichigan,wherehegraduatedin1929.FollowingsevenyearsofteachingasinstructorinCivilEngineeringattheCarnegieInstituteofTechnology,hejoinedPittsburghPlateGlassCompanyandlaterPittsburghCorningCorporation,whereheworkedasLaboratoryDirectoruntil1946. �tthattimeJohnKohlreturnedtoacademia:hejoinedtheDepartmentofCivilEngineeringattheUniversityofMichiganas�ssistant,later�ssociateandFullProfessor.In1952healsobecametheDirectoroftheTransportationInstituteattheUniversityofMichigan.In1961,he received the University’s Distinguished Faculty Award. When the Kennedy Administration established the first Federal Government full position inchargeofurbantransportationin1961,JohnKohlwasselectedforit:hebecame�ssistant�dministratorforTransportationinHousingandHomeFinance�gency.Later,hewas�ct-ing Director of the Office of Transportation in HUD, predecessor of UMTA, present Federal Transit�dministration.From1966to1968ProfessorKohlwasExecutiveSecretaryoftheDivisionofEngineeringintheNational�cademyofSciences. In 1970 Governor Cahill of New Jersey appointed Professor Kohl to his Cabinet.�sCommissionerofTransportationforNewJersey,JohnKohlreorganizedtheDepartmentfrommodaltofunctionalstructure.In1974,hejoinedtheUniversityofPennsylvania,wherehewasProfessorofCivilEngineering-Transportationuntilhisretirementin1976.Evenafterretirement,hewasSeniorVisitingFellowatPrincetonUniversityuntil1981. ProfessorKohlhadabroadvisionandexcellentunderstandingoftransportationasamul-timodalsystem,longbeforemanytransportationprofessionalsobtainedthisunderstanding.Inadditiontohisteachingandadministrativeachievements,hehadanumberofpublications,presentations,membershipsandawards.JohnKohlhasbeenlistedin“WhoIsWhoin�merica”since1967,andmostrecentlyin“WhoIsWhointheWorld.” Among his colleagues—transportation professionals, public officials and friends—John Kohlwasadmiredandappreciatedforhiscontributionsinacademia,inpublicservice,inconsulting,and,particularly,inremovingbarriersandstimulatinginteractionsandcoopera-tionamongthesegroups.Thetransportationandcivilengineeringprofessionshavelostanoutstandingseniormember;wehavelostanappreciatedcolleagueandfriend. ProfessorKohlwasmarriedtoformerGladysMitchellfromPittsburghfor58years.Theyhadtwosons,Johnand�tlee.
